Claims
- 1. A method of configuring information into a data structure, comprising:assigning a continuum label to each of every one of multiple information units accessible by a computer system by entering the continuum label into a data structure or rules database that relates continuum labels to information units, wherein the continuum label corresponds to a continuum attribute and a value of the continuum attribute; and establishing a continuum arrangement for every one of the multiple information units, wherein an ordering of the information units within the continuum arrangement is determined by a level of relatedness between the subject matter of an information unit and that of a reference information unit, and wherein the level of relatedness is indicated by the value of the continuum attribute.
- 2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the continuum attribute comprises a level of relatedness of the subject matter of the corresponding information unit to that of the reference information unit.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said assigning a continuum label comprises setting a policy for assignment of a continuum label to each of the multiple information units, wherein the policy is adapted for at least one of the multiple information units to be created after said setting a policy.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 3, wherein said setting a policy comprises entering rules into a rules database, wherein said rules characterize collection of the at least one of the multiple information units in response to an instruction for display of the at least one of the information units, and wherein said rules arc adapted for the instruction for display to occur subsequent to said entering rules.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the computer system is adapted for said assigning and establishing to be performed by an organizer of the computer-based information.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the computer system is adapted for the reference information unit to be designated by an organizer of the computer-based information.
- 7. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the computer system is adapted for the reference information unit to be designated using input from a viewer of the computer-based information.
- 8. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the computer system is adapted for said establishing to be performed by a system administrator for the computer system.
- 9. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein said assigning a continuum label comprises assigning a label to an information unit comprising a value of a system or network variable.
- 10. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising linking the continuum arrangement to a display controller associated with the computer system, wherein the display controller is adapted to forward to a display device an information unit having a specific level of relatedness to the reference information unit, in response to a request from a viewer of the computer-based information.
- 11. The method as recited in claim 10, wherein said linking comprises programming the display controller to access a data structure or rules database comprising at least a portion of the continuum arrangement.
- 12. The method as recited in claim 11, wherein said linking comprises configuring a control program to access a rules database comprising rules for forming the continuum arrangement, form the continuum arrangement, and forward at least a portion of the continuum arrangement to the display controller.
- 13. A computer-usable carrier medium for arranging information into a data structure for display upon a display device, comprising:first program instructions executable on a computer system for receiving entry of a continuum label for assignment to each of every one of multiple information units accessible by the computer system; second program instructions executable on the computer system for establishing a continuum arrangement for every one of the multiple information units, wherein an ordering of the information units within the continuum arrangement is determined by a level of relatedness between the subject matter of an information unit and that of a reference information unit, and wherein the level of relatedness is determined by a value of a continuum attribute corresponding to the continuum label; and third program instructions executable on the computer system for forwarding at least a portion of the continuum arrangement to a display controller associated with the computer system, wherein the display controller is adapted to forward to a display device an information unit having a specific level of relatedness to the reference information unit.
- 14. The carrier medium as recited in claim 13, wherein said receiving entry of a continuum label comprises receiving entry of a policy containing rules for assigning a continuum label, wherein the policy is adapted for at least one of the multiple information units to be created subsequent to said receiving entry of a policy.
- 15. The carrier medium as recited in claim 14, further comprising fourth program instructions executable on the computer system for collecting and assigning a continuum label to the at least one of the multiple information units, in response to an instruction for display of the at least one of the information units.
- 16. The carrier medium as recited in claim 13, wherein:the first and second program instructions form a portion of an application program for monitoring the status and operation of the computer system; the information units comprise values of system or network quantities; and the continuum label characterizes an application program executable on the computer system or a network containing the computer system.
- 17. The carrier medium as recited in claim 13, wherein the carrier medium comprises a storage medium.
