Claims
- 1. In an overall system in which a boring tool is moved through the ground within a given region along a particular path while transmitting a locating signal, said boring tool moving in an orientation which includes pitch, said locating signal exhibiting a pair of negative locate points at the surface of the ground, a locating arrangement for determining the depth of said boring tool at a particular position, said locating arrangement comprising:a portable locator including (i) at least two antennas which are arranged orthogonally with respect to one another for use in identifying a negative locate point corresponding to said particular position of the boring tool along said particular path, (ii) an arrangement configured for measuring a signal strength of the locating signal at said negative locate point using said antennas, (iii) a pitch sensing arrangement for determining the pitch of the boring tool while the portable locator is positioned at said negative locate point, and (iv) a processing section configured for using the measured signal strength and the determined pitch to establish the depth of said boring tool beneath the surface of the ground at said particular position.
- 2. The locating arrangement claim 1 wherein the negative locate point is a forward locate point and wherein said processing section is further configured for determining a forward distance which is a horizontal distance between the forward locate point and a point directly above the boring tool.
- 3. The locating arrangement of claim 1 wherein said portable locator includes a display arrangement for displaying at least the depth of the boring tool.
- 4. The locating arrangement of claim 1 wherein the locating signal includes flux lines oriented in a vertical direction at each negative locate point and wherein said antennas are arranged to produce equal outputs when the portable locator is in a predetermined orientation at each negative locate point.
- 5. In an overall system in which a boring tool is moved through the ground within a given region along a particular path while transmitting a locating signal, said boring tool moving in an orientation which includes pitch, said locating signal exhibiting at least one point defined by a particular orientation of flux lines at the surface of the ground, a locating arrangement for determining the depth of said boring tool at a particular position, said locating arrangement comprising:a portable locator including (i) at least one antenna for use in identifying said point, (ii) an arrangement configured for measuring a signal strength of the locating signal at said point using said antenna, (iii) a pitch sensing arrangement for determining the pitch of the boring tool while the portable locator is positioned at said point, and (iv) a processing section configured for using the measured signal strength and the determined pitch to establish the depth of said boring tool beneath the surface of the ground at said particular position.
- 6. The locating arrangement claim 5 wherein said point is a forward locate point and wherein said processing section is further configured for determining a forward distance as a horizontal distance between the forward locate point and a point directly above the boring tool.
- 7. The locating arrangement of claim 5 wherein said portable locator includes a display arrangement for displaying at least the depth of the boring tool.
- 8. The locating arrangement of claim 5 wherein said antenna is arranged to detect flux lines oriented in a vertical direction at said point with the portable locator in a predetermined orientation at said point.
- 9. The locating arrangement of claim 5 wherein said point is a forward locate point and wherein said processing section is further configured for determining a radial distance between the forward locate point and the boring tool.
- 10. In an overall system in which a boring tool is moved through the ground within a given region along a particular path while transmitting a locating signal, said boring tool moving in an orientation which includes pitch, said locating signal exhibiting a point defined by a particular orientation of flux lines at the surface of the ground, locating arrangement for determining a posital relationship between said boring tool and a portable locator at a particular position, said locating arrangement comprising:a portable locator including (i) at least one antenna for use in identifying said point, (ii) an arrangement configured for measuring a signal strength of the locating signal at said point using said one or more antennas, (iii) a pitch sensing arrangement for determining the pitch of the boring tool while the portable locator is positioned at said point, and (iv) a processing section configured for using the measured signal strength and the determined pitch to establish the depth of said boring tool beneath the surface of the ground at said particular position as part of said positional relationship.
- 11. The locating arrangement of claim 10 wherein said portable locator includes a display arrangement for displaying said positional relationship.
- 12. The locating arrangement of claim 10 wherein said antenna is arranged to detect flux lines oriented in a vertical direction at said point with the portable locator in a predetermined orientation at said point.
- 13. The locating arrangement of claim 10 wherein said processing section is further configured for determining a forward distance as another part of said positional relationship.
- 14. The locating arrangement of claim 10 wherein said processing section is further configured for determining a radial distance as another part of said positional relationship.
