Claims
- 1. A method for detecting whether or not a fault is downstream of a reference point in a power system supplied from a source having an alternating-current waveform comprising determining a change in the sensed total system magnetic flux and indicating a downstream fault if the total system magnetic flux is not significantly changed beyond a predetermined value.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said determining step comprises calculating the change in the total system magnetic flux by integrating a difference with respect to time according to the relationship ΔV=Vref−(V+Ldi/dt), where L is the inductance of the system, V is a sensed voltage and Vref is a reference voltage of a reference waveform.
- 3. A method for detecting, whether or not a fault is downstream of a reference point in a power system supplied from a source having an alternating-current waveform, the method comprising the steps of:comparing sensed current and system voltage at various points along the alternating-current waveform to determine the direction and magnitude of the current; and detecting whether or not the current satisfies the combination of a threshold di/dt value and an absolute current value to distinguish fault from load currents, said detecting step further comprising varying the threshold di/dt value when the detecting occurs near the end of a half cycle of the voltage waveform.
