Claims
- 1. An article carrier assembly for attachment to a vehicle roof panel, the roof panel having a recessed portion, the article carrier assembly comprising:
- a side rail attachable to the vehicle roof panel, said side rail having an outboard portion extending away from the recessed portion and having an outer surface, and an inboard portion extending into the recessed portion, said inboard portion including a support leg and an edge portion defining a track; and
- a cross rail, a retainer supporting said cross rail having a latch connected thereto, said latch being engageable with said edge portion for securing the retainer in discrete positions along the side rail, said retainer having a foot retained in said inboard portion track and being substantially hidden behind said outer surface when viewed from a position alongside the vehicle wherein said foot has a loop portion extending in a channel defined between said support leg and said edge portion.
- 2. The invention as defined in claim 1 wherein said loop portion compressibly engages said side rail in a manner to prevent rattles.
- 3. The article carrier assembly of claim 1, wherein said retainer further comprises a molded-in resilient spring for engaging said side rail in a manner to prevent rattles.
- 4. The article carrier assembly of claim 1, further comprising a gasket positioned between said side rail and the roof panel.
- 5. The article carrier assembly of claim 1, wherein said side rail further comprises at least one support rib supporting said outboard portion, support leg and edge portion.
- 6. The article carrier assembly of claim 1, wherein said latch comprises a lever with a hook portion, the lever being pivotally connected to the retainer.
- 7. The article carrier assembly of claim 6, wherein said hook portion comprises a molded-in hook spring formed therein for compression against the gasket.
- 8. An article carrier assembly for attachment to a vehicle roof panel, the roof panel having a recessed portion, the article carrier assembly comprising:
- a side rail attachable to the vehicle roof panel, said side rail having an outboard portion extending away form the recessed portion and having an outer surface, and an inboard portion extending into the recessed portion, said inboard portion including a support leg and an edge portion defining a track; and
- a cross rail, a retainer supporting said cross rail having a latch connected thereto, said latch being engageable with said edge portion for securing the retainer in discrete positions along the side rail, said retainer having a foot retained in said inboard portion track and being substantially hidden behind said outer surface when viewed from a position alongside the vehicle wherein said retainer further comprises a molded-in resilient standoff spring for engaging said side rail in a manner to prevent rattles.
- 9. An article carrier assembly for attachment to a vehicle roof panel, the roof panel having a recessed portion, the article carrier assembly comprising:
- a side rail attachable to the vehicle roof panel, said side rail having an outboard portion extending away from the recessed portion and having an outer surface, and an inboard portion extending into the recessed portion, said inboard portion including a support leg and an edge portion defining a track; and
- a cross rail, a retainer supporting said cross rail having a latch connected thereto, said latch being engagable with said edge portion for securing the retainer in discrete positions along the side rail, said retainer having a foot retained in said inboard portion track and being substantially hidden behind said outer surface when viewed from a position alongside the vehicle wherein said side rail further comprises at least one support rib supporting said outboard portion, support leg and edge portion.
