Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a sheet of material into an article, comprising:
- a male die having an upper end, a lower end and an outer peripheral male die surface extending a distance generally between the lower end and the upper end of the male die;
- a female die having an upper end, a lower end and an opening intersecting the upper end and extending a distance towards the lower end forming an inner peripheral female die surface, the opening being shaped to receive the portion of the male die having the male die surface formed thereon and the female die surface being mateable with the male die surface with a clearance therebetween in a forming position of the male die and the female die;
- means for moving one of the male die and the female die to the forming position with the male die surface matingly disposed in the female die surface and for removing one of the male die and the female die from the forming position;
- a platform having a support surface formed thereon and an opening extending through the support surface, the female die being disposed in the opening with the upper end of the female die being disposed generally near the support surface, the support surface being adapted to support at least portions of the sheet of material with a generally central portion of the sheet of material being disposed generally over the opening through the upper end of the female die; and
- said means for holding being inclined portions of said support surface defining vacuum parts therein.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the hold openings are positioned in four groups of hold openings with the four groups of hold openings being spaced generally at ninety degree intervals generally about the opening at the upper end of the female die and each group of hold openings being spaced a distance from generally adjacent groups of hold openings.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 defined further to include four inclined support surfaces spaced at about ninety degree intervals circumferentially about the opening in the female die.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the male die includes at least one opening extending therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof, and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for applying a vacuum generally at the lower end in the male die via the opening through the male die for cooperating to hold the portions of the sheet of material engaged by the lower end of the male die generally against the lower end of the male die as the male die and female die move into the forming position.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 defined further to include:
- means for heating the outer peripheral male die surface of the male die.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 defined further to include:
- means for heating the female die surface of the female die.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the male die includes at least one opening formed therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- a vacuum source connected to the openings in the male die for applying a vacuum at the lower end of the male die via said openings in the male die;
- a blower connected to the openings in the male die for blowing air through said opening in the male die; and
- means for connecting the vacuum source to the openings in the male die for applying a vacuum at the lower end of the male die during the forming of the article as the male die and the female die are moved into the forming position and for connecting the blower to the openings in the male die for blowing air through the openings in the male die when the male die and the female die are removed from the forming position.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 defined further to include:
- a post having one end supported on a surface and the post extending a distance from a surface terminating with an opposite upper end;
- a beam having one end pivotally connected to the post generally near the upper end of the post, the male die being supported on the beam and the beam being pivotal from a forming position to an unloading position and from an unloading position to the forming position;
- means for supporting the female die on the post generally below and spaced a distance from the male die; and
- means for moving the beam from the unloading position to the forming position and from the forming position to the unloading position, the beam positioning the male die generally above and aligned with the female die in the forming position of the beam and the beam removing the male die from an aligned position with the female die in the unloading position for facilitating the unloading of the formed article; and wherein the means for moving one of the male die and the female die to the forming position and the storage position is defined further as moving the male die to the forming position with the female die when the beam is pivoted to the forming position of the beam.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for holding portions of the sheet of material is defined further as positioned to the portions at preselected positions on the support surface of the platform while permitting such held portions to slide on the support surface.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the sheet of material is defined further as having an outer peripheral edge, and wherein the means for holding portions of the sheet of material is defined further as positioned to hold portions of the sheet of material generally near the outer peripheral edge of the sheet of material.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the male die includes
- at least one opening extending therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof, and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for applying a vacuum generally at the lower end of the male die via the opening through the male die for cooperating to hold portions of the sheet of material engaged by the lower end of the male die generally against the lower end of the male die as the male die and the female die move into the forming position; and wherein the means for holding portions of the sheet of material is defined further to include:
- at least one inclined support surface disposed on the platform and extending a distance generally angularly upwardly and outwardly from the opening in the female die, each including support surface forming a portion of the support surface of the platform and a plurality of hold openings being formed through each inclined support surface; and
- means for applying a vacuum at the hold openings sufficient to hold portions of the sheet of material disposed generally over the hold openings while permitting the held portions of the sheet of material to slide on the support surface during the forming of the article as the male die and the female die are moved into the forming position, said means cooperating to holdingly retain portions of the sheet of material to prevent some portions of the sheet of material from being moved into engagement between the male die and the female die in the forming position of the male die and the female die.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein each of the inclined support surfaces is movably connected to the platform for movement from a storage position to an operating position and for movement from the operating position to the storage position, each of the inclined support surfaces being substantially coplanar with the remaining support surface portions of the platform to form a substantially flat support surface in the storage position of the inclined support surfaces and each of the inclined support surfaces extending at an angle generally upwardly and outwardly from the opening in the female die in the operating position of the inclined support surfaces; and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for moving the inclined support surfaces from the storage position to the operating position and from the operating position to the storage position, said means moving the inclined support surfaces from the storage position to the operating position prior to the male die and the female die being moved to the forming position.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 defined further to include:
- a lower table having an upper surface;
- an upper table having a lower surface, the lower surface of the upper table being spaced a distance from the upper surface of the lower table;
- means connected to the upper table and the lower table for moving the upper table and the lower table for moving the upper table and the lower table to at least three stations; and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- at least three male dies and at least three female dies, the three female dies being supported on the lower table with the upper end of each female die being disposed generally near the upper surface of the lower table and the three male dies each being movably connected to the upper table generally near the lower surface of the upper table, each of the male dies being aligned with one of the female dies; and wherein the means for moving one of the male die and the female die is further defined as including:
- means for moving each of the male dies from a storage position wherein the upper end of the male die is disposed generally near the lower surface of the upper table to the forming position wherein each male die surface is matingly disposed generally adjacent the female die surface of one of the female dies and for moving each of the male dies from the forming position to the storage position; wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for placing a sheet of material generally over the opening in the female die disposed at one of the stations; and
- means for removing the formed article at one of the stations; and wherein the means for moving one of the male and female dies is defined further as moving each of the male dies to the forming position when the male die is positioned at the station where the sheet of material is disposed over the opening in the female die, and for moving each of the male dies to the forming position when the male die is moved to one of the other stations, and for moving each of the male dies to the storage position when the male die is moved to the station having the means for removing the formed article.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 defined further to include:
- means connected to the male die and the female die for heating the male die surface and the female die surface to a predetermined temperature level.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each inclined support surface is generally triangularly shaped with a base of each triangularly shaped inclined support surface being disposed generally near the opening in the female die and with each triangularly shaped inclined support surface extending angularly upwardly and outwardly from the opening in the female die terminating with a triangle apex outermost end.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 defined further to include four inclined support surfaces spaced at about ninety degree intervals about the opening in the female die and wherein the four triangularly shaped inclined support surfaces are positioned about the opening in the female die and arranged so the outermost end portions of the four triangularly shaped inclined support surfaces cooperate to form a substantially square shape in a plan view with the outermost ends of the inclined support surfaces forming the four corners of the square.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein each of the inclined support surfaces is spaced a distance from generally adjacent inclined support surfaces with the space between each pair of generally adjacent inclined support surfaces forming a substantially horizontally disposed flat portion of the support surface, each flat portion extending a distance generally racially outwardly from the opening in the female die and the flat portions cooperating with the inclined support surfaces to form the support surface of the platform.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 defined further to include: at least one rib disposed on each flat portion of the support surface, each rib extending a distance radially outwardly and spaced a distance from the opening in the female die and each rib extending a distance above the flat portion on which such rib is disposed.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 17 defined further to include: means connected to the inclined support surfaces for moving each of the inclined support surfaces from a storage position to an operating position and from an operating position to a storage position, the inclined support surfaces being generally horizontally disposed in the storage position and the inclined surfaces extending angularly upwardly in the operating position.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the male die includes a base portion having an upper end, a lower end, and an outer peripheral surface forming at least a portion of the male die surface, the base portion extending from the lower end of the male die in a direction generally toward the upper end of the male die and the upper end of the base portion being spaced a distance from the upper end of the male die, the base portion being generally frusto-conically shaped, and wherein a portion of the male die beginning generally at the upper end of the base portion forms a flared portion extending a distance angularly outwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the base portion of the male die, and wherein the female die surface includes a base portion having an upper end and a lower end, the base portion of the female die being generally frusto-conically shaped and being generally matable with the base portion of the male die in the forming position of the male die and the female die, and wherein the female die surface also includes a flared portion having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the flared portion of the female die being generally adjacent the upper end of the base portion of the female die and the flared portion extending angularly outwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the base portion of the female die, the flared portion of the female die being matable with the flared portion of the male die in the forming position of the male die and the female die.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the means for holding predetermined portions of the sheet of material is defined further to include:
- at least one inclined support surface disposed on the platform and extending a distance generally angularly upwardly and outwardly from the opening in the female die, each inclined support surface forming a portion of the support surface of the platform and a plurality of hold openings being formed through each inclined support surface, each inclined support surface extending at an angle about the same as the angle of the flared portions of the male die and the female die; and
- means for applying a vacuum at the hold opening sufficient to hold portions of the sheet of material disposed generally over the hold openings while permitting the held portions of the sheet of material to slide on the support surface during the forming of the article as the male die and the female die are moved into the forming position.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 21 defined further to include four inclined support surfaces spaced to about ninety degree intervals circumferentially about the opening in the female die.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein each inclined support surface is generally triangularly shaped with a base of each triangularly shaped inclined support surface being disposed generally near the opening in the female die and with each triangularly shaped inclined support surface extending angularly upwardly and outwardly from the opening in the female die terminating with a triangle apex outermost end.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 23 defined further to include four inclined support surfaces spaced at about ninety degree intervals about the opening in the female die and wherein the four triangularly shaped inclined support surfaces are positioned about the opening in the female die and arranged so the outermost end portions of the four triangularly shaped inclined support surfaces cooperate to form a substantially square shape in a plan view with the outermost ends of the inclined support surfaces forming the four corners of the square.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein each of the inclined support surfaces is spaced a distance from generally adjacent inclined support surfaces with the space between each pair of generally adjacent inclined support surfaces forming a substantially horizontally disposed flat portion of the support surface, each flat portion extending a distance generally radially outwardly from the opening in the female die and the flat portions cooperating with the inclined support surface to form the support surface on the platform.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 25 defined further to include:
- at least one rib disposed on each flat portion of the support surface, each rib extending a distance radially outwardly and spaced a distance from the opening in the female die and each rib extending a distance above the flat portion on which such rib is disposed.
- 27. An apparatus for forming a sheet of material into an article, comprising:
- a male die having an upper end, a lower end and an outer peripheral male die surface extending a distance generally between the lower end and the upper end of the male die;
- a female die having an upper end, a lower end and an opening intersecting the upper end and extending a distance toward the lower end forming an inner peripheral female die surface, the opening being shaped to receive the portion of the male die having the male die surface formed thereon and the female die surface being mateable with the male die surface with a clearance therebeteween in a forming position of the male die and the female die;
- a roll of film having a supply of film; and
- means for passing a portion of the film in the roll of film generally between the male die and the female die;
- means for cutting the film from the roll of film into a sheet of film after the portion of film has been passed between the male and the female die to position the sheet of material generally between the male and the female die;
- means for moving one of the male die and the female die to the forming position after the sheet of material has been placed between the male and the female die, the male die surface being matingly disposed in the female die surface in the forming position and for removing one of the male and the female die from the forming position and support surfaces extending about at least one of the dies and having perforated inclined portions defining vacuum parts for holding a sheet of said material adjacent said at least one of said dies.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein the male die includes a base portion having an upper end, a lower end, and an outer peripheral surface forming at least a portion of the male die surface, the base portion extending from the lower end of the male die in a direction generally toward the upper end of the male die and the upper end of the base portion being spaced a distance from the upper end of the male die, the base portion being generally frusto-conically shaped, and wherein a portion of the male die beginning generally at the upper end of the base portion forms a flared portion extending a distance angularly outwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the base portion of the male die and circumferentially about the male die; and wherein the female die surface includes a base portion having an upper end and a lower end, the base portion of the female die being generally frusto-conically shaped and being generally matable with the base portion of the male die in the forming position of the male die and the female die, and wherein the female die surface also includes a flared portion having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the flared portion of the female die being generally adjacent the upper end of the base portion of the female die and the flared portion extending angularly outwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the base portion of the female die, the flared portion of the female die being matable with the flared portion of the male die in the forming position of the male die and the female die.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 27 defined further to include:
- means for heating the outer peripheral male die surface of the male die.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 27 defined further to include:
- means for heating the female die surface of the female die.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 27 wherein the male die includes at least one opening formed therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- a vacuum source connected to the openings in the male die for applying a vacuum at the lower end of the male die via said openings in the male die;
- a blower connected to the openings in the male die for blowing air through said opening in the male die; and
- means for connecting the vacuum source to the openings in the male die for applying a vacuum at the lower end of the male die during the forming of the article as the male die and the female die are moved into the forming position and for connecting the blower to the openings in the male die for blowing air through the openings in the male die when the male die and the female die are removed from the forming position.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 27 defined further to include:
- a lower table having an upper surface;
- an upper table having a lower surface, the lower surface of the upper table being spaced a distance from the upper surface of the lower table;
- means connected to the upper table and the lower table for moving the upper table and the lower table for moving the upper table and the lower table to at least three stations; and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- at least three male dies and at least three female dies, the three female dies being supported on the lower table with the upper end of each female die being disposed generally near the upper surface of the lower table and the three male dies each being movably connected to the upper table generally near the lower surface of the upper table, each of the male dies being aligned with one of the female dies; and wherein the means for moving one of the male die and the female die is further defined as including:
- means for moving each of the male dies from a storage position wherein the upper end of the male die is disposed generally near the lower surface of the upper table to the forming position wherein each male die surface is matingly disposed generally adjacent the female die surface of one of the female dies and for moving each of the male dies from the forming position to the storage position; and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for placing a sheet of material generally over the opening in the female die disposed at one of the stations; and
- means for removing the formed article at one of the stations; and wherein the means for moving one of the male and female dies is defined further as moving each of the male dies to the forming position when the male die is positioned at the station where the sheet of material is disposed over the opening in the female die, and for moving each of the male dies to the forming position when the male die is moved to one of the other stations, and for moving each of the male dies to the storage position when the male die is moved to the station having the means for removing the formed article.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 27 defined further to include:
- means for removing the article after one of the male die and the female die has been removed from the forming position.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 33 defined further to include:
- a platform having a support surface formed thereon and an opening extending through the support surface, the female die being disposed in the opening with the upper end of the female die being disposed generally near the support surface, the support surface being adapted to support at least portions of the sheet of material with a generally central portion of the sheet of material being disposed generally over the opening through the upper end of the female die.
- 35. The apparatus of claim 33 wherein the male die includes at least one opening extending therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof, and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for applying a vacuum generally at the lower end in the male die via the opening through the male die for cooperating to hold the portions of the sheet of material engaged by the lower end of the male die generally against the lower end of the male die as the male die and female die move into the forming position.
- 36. The apparatus for forming a sheet of material into an article, comprising:
- a male die having an upper end, a lower end and an outer peripheral male die surface extending a distance generally between the lower end and the upper end of the male die;
- a female die having an upper end, a lower end and an opening intersecting the upper end and extending a distance toward the lower end forming an inner peripheral female die surface, the opening being shaped to receive the portion of the male die having the male die surface formed thereon and the female die surface being mateable with the male die surface with a clearance therebetween in a forming position of the male die and the female die;
- a platform having a support surface formed thereon and an opening extending through the support surface, the female die being disposed in the opening with the upper end of the female die being disposed generally near the support surface, the support surface being adapted to support at least portions of the sheet of material with a generally central portion of the sheet of material being disposed generally over the opening through the upper end of the female die.
- a post having one end supported on a surface and the post extending a distance from the surface terminating with an opposite upper end;
- a beam having one end pivotally connected to the post generally near the upper end of the post, the male die being supported in the beam and the beam being pivotal from a forming position to an unloading position and from an unloading position to the forming position;
- means for supporting the female die on the post generally below and spaced a distance from the male die in a storage position of the male die;
- means for moving the beam from the unloading position to the forming position and from the forming position to the unloading position, the beam positioning the male die generally above and aligned with the female die in the forming position of the beam and the beam removing the male die from an aligned position with the female die in the unloading position for facilitating the unloading of the formed article;
- means for moving one of the male die and the female die to the forming position with the male die surface matingly disposed in the female die surface and for moving one of the male die and the female die from the forming position to the storage position, said means moving the male die to the forming position when the beam is pivoted to the forming position and support surfaces extending about at least one of the dies and having perforated inclined portions defining vacuum parts for holding a sheet of said material adjacent said at least one of said dies of the beam.
- 37. The apparatus of claim 36 wherein the male die includes at least one opening extending therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof, and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- means for applying a vacuum generally at the lower end in the male die via the opening through the male die for cooperating to hold the portions of the sheet of material engaged by the lower end of the male die generally against the lower end of the male die as the male die and female die move into the forming position.
- 38. The apparatus of claim 36 wherein the male die includes a base portion having an upper end, a lower end, and an outer peripheral surface forming at least a portion of the male die surface, the base portion extending from the lower end of the male die in a direction generally toward the upper end of the male die and the upper end of the base portion being spaced a distance from the upper end of the male die, the base portion being generally frusto-conically shaped, and wherein a portion of the male die beginning generally at the upper end of the base portion forms a flared portion extending a distance angularly outwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the base portion of the male die and circumferentially about the male die; and wherein the female die surface includes a base portion having an upper end and a lower end, the base portion of the female die being generally frusto-conically shaped and being generally matable with the base portion of the male die in the forming position of the male die and the female die, and wherein the female die surface also includes a flared position having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the flared portion of the female die being generally adjacent the upper end of the base portion of the female die and the flared portion extending angularly outwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the base portion of the female die, the flared portion of the female die being matable with the flared portion of the male die in the forming position of the male die and the female die.
- 39. The apparatus of claim 36 defined further to include:
- means for heating the outer peripheral male die surface of the male die.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 36 defined further to include:
- means for heating the female die surface of the female die.
- 41. The apparatus of claim 36 wherein the male die includes at least one opening formed therethrough and intersecting the lower end thereof and wherein the apparatus is defined further to include:
- a vacuum source connected to the openings in the male die for applying a vacuum at the lower end of the male die via said openings in the male die;
- a blower connected to the openings in the male die for blowing air through said opening in the male die; and
- means for connecting the vacuum source to the openings in the male die for applying a vacuum at the lower end of the male die during the forming of the article as the male die and the female die are moved into the forming position and for connecting the blower to the openings in the male die for blowing air through the openings in the male die when the male die and the female die are removed from the forming position.
