Claims
- 1. Method of making a coated rubber article which comprises
- first coating a cured natural or synthetic rubber article with a solution containing as priming agent a di- or poly-vinyl compound and an organic peroxide cross-linking agent,
- then coating said article with a solution containing a generally linear organo-phosphonitrile polymer containing randomly distributed repeating units having the structures: ##STR4## wherein A represents RO--, RNH--, X(CF.sub.2).sub.m CH.sub.2 O--, or X(CF.sub.2).sub.m CH.sub.2 NH-- and B represents R'O--, R'NH, Y(CF.sub.2).sub.n CH.sub.2 O--, or Y(CF.sub.2).sub.n CH.sub.2 NH--, R and R' each being selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl and aryl such as phenyl, tolyl, chlorophenyl, X and Y each being selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and fluorine, and m and n each being an integer from 1 to 8 inclusive, together with an organic peroxide curing agent in an amount from 0.1 to 5% by weight of said polymer, and an alkyl aluminum compound having the composition
- Al R.sub.1 R.sub.2 R.sub.3
- wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are alkyl having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, the amount of said aluminum compound being from 0.01 to 2% by weight of said polymer,
- drying and heating said coated article at a temperature from room temperature to 70.degree. C. to cure said organo-phosphonitrile polymer coating and to cross-link said priming agent and bond said polymer coating to said article.
- 2. Method as claimed in claim 1 in which said priming agent is selected from the group consisting of those having the structures: ##STR5## in which R.sub.4 is aliphatic hydrocarbon containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or aromatic hydrocarbon, and low molecular weight polymers thereof in which the degree of polymerization is up to 100 and which contain two or more polymerizable vinyl groups, and said organic peroxide cross-linking agent is present in an amount from 10 to 150% by weight of said priming agent, and said first coating is dried before applying said coating comprising organo-phosphonitrile polymer.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said article is a catheter.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein said organo-phosphonitrile polymer is one in which A represents X(CF.sub.2).sub.m CH.sub.2 O-- and B represents Y(CF.sub.2).sub.n CH.sub.2 O--, X and Y each being selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and fluorine, and m and n each being an integer from 1 to 8.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 4 in which said priming agent is divinyl benzene.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 4 in which said priming agent is a low molecular weight polymer of 1,3-butadiene having a degree of polymerization up to 100 and containing two or more polymerizable vinyl groups.
- 7. A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 in which said alkyl aluminum compound is trialkyl aluminum in which each alkyl group contains 2 to 8 carbon atoms.
- 8. A method as claimed in any one of claims 4 to 6 in which said alkyl aluminum compound is trialkyl aluminum in which each alkyl group contains 2 to 8 carbon atoms.
