Claims
- 1. A voice communication headset, to be worn on an ear, comprising:
- a main housing having an arcuate surface that rests on top of the ear;
- a microphone boom, with one end thereof connected to said main housing;
- microphone means affixed to the free end of said microphone boom and electrically connected to said main housing, said microphone means for converting sound waves into electrical signals;
- a receiver housing, having an arcuate surface that adjustably contacts the lower-back portion of the ear;
- a receiver element, located within said receiver housing, for converting electrical signals into audible sound waves;
- an ear tube connected to said receiver housing for transmitting the audible sound waves to the ear; and
- friction hinge means for pivotally connecting said main housing with said receiver housing, said hinge means being positioned behind the ear and allowing the position of the main housing to be adjusted with respect to the receiver housing so that a tight fit around the ear can be achieved thereby providing stability to counter the destabilizing forces of the microphone means.
- 2. A headset as recited in claim 1, wherein said boom is rotatable with respect to said main housing, allowing said headset to be worn on either a left ear or a right ear.
- 3. A headset as recited in claim 1, wherein said friction hinge means comprises a pin member protruding from one of said housings in a direction generally parallel to the ear's auditory canal, and a journal member protruding from the other of said housings, said journal member having a bore which pivotally engages said pin member.
- 4. A headset as recited in claim 3, wherein said journal member is made from an elastomer.
- 5. A headset as recited in claim 4, wherein said journal member is an elongated part partially received within said receiver housing, said hinge means enclosing said receiver element to further acoustically isolate it from said microphone means and to act as a shock absorber for said receiver element.
- 6. A headset as recited in claim 1, wherein said headset further includes an ear tube for transmitting audible sound waves from said receiver into the ear, said ear tube having one end supported adjacent to said receiver and its opposite end adapted for insertion into the ear.
- 7. A headset as recited in claim 1 wherein said friction hinge means includes an elastomer portion providing physical and acoustical separation between said receiver element and said microphone means.
