Claims
- 1. A surgical apparatus comprising:
- a handle;
- an elongated body having a longitudinal axis extending distally from the handle;
- a tool mechanism supported adjacent the distal end of the elongated body, the tool mechanism being movable from an open position to a closed position;
- a linkage extending between a proximal and a distal end of the elongated body and being operatively associated with the tool mechanism, the linkage being movable to pivot the tool mechanism about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis;
- a control member operatively associated with the linkage, the control member being movable to operate the tool mechanism; and
- a collar operatively associated with the elongated body, the collar being movable to rotate the elongated body about the longitudinal axis.
- 2. A surgical apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the tool mechanism includes first and second jaws.
- 3. A surgical apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the linkage is movable to pivot the tool mechanism about the axis transverse to the longitudinal axis without changing the relative orientation of the first and second jaws.
- 4. A surgical apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the handle includes a first handle portion and a second handle portion, the second handle portion being operatively associated with the first and second jaws and being movable with respect to the first handle portion to move the first and second jaws between open and closed positions.
- 5. A surgical apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the control member is rotatably supported on the handle.
- 6. A surgical apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the collar is rotatably supported adjacent the handle.
- 7. A surgical apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the tool mechanism is pivotable within a 90.degree. sector of rotation.
- 8. A surgical apparatus comprising:
- a handle;
- an elongated body having a longitudinal axis extending distally from the handle;
- a tool mechanism supported adjacent the distal end of the elongated body;
- a linkage extending between a proximal and a distal end of the elongated body and being operatively associated with the tool mechanism, the linkage being movable to pivot the tool mechanism about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis; and
- an actuator operatively associated with the linkage, the actuator being movable to operate the tool mechanism,
- wherein the tool mechanism includes first and second jaws, and the linkage is movable to pivot the first and second jaws about an axis transverse to the longitudinal axis while maintaining the first and second jaws in a fixed position relative to each other.
- 9. A surgical apparatus according to claim 8, wherein the handle includes a first handle portion and a second handle portion, the second handle portion being operatively associated with the first and second jaws and being movable with respect to the first handle portion to move the first and second jaws between open and closed positions.
- 10. A surgical apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the tool mechanism is pivotable within a 90.degree. sector of rotation.
- 11. A surgical apparatus comprising:
- a handle portion;
- an elongated body portion including an elongated tubular section defining a longitudinal axis and having opposed proximal and distal ends, the proximal end of the tubular section extending from the handle portion;
- a tool mechanism depending from the elongated body portion, the tool mechanism having a pair of jaws which are movable relative to each other between open and closed positions;
- an actuating mechanism associated with the handle portion and the elongated body, the actuating mechanism being actuable to pivot the tool mechanism to an articulated position at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the tubular section; and
- a rotation member operatively connected to the elongated body portion and supported adjacent to the handle portion, the rotation member being movable to rotate the elongated body portion about the longitudinal axis relative to the handle portion.
