Claims
- 1. A process for converting glucose to 2-KLG which process comprises culturing in a medium containing glucose under suitable metabolic conditions, bacterial cells to which genetic material has been transferred wherein the transfer of said genetic material renders a bacterial host cell capable of converting glucose to 2,5-DKG but lacking the ability to convert 2,5-DKG to 2-KLG, capable of converting 2,5-DKG into 2-KLG.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the genetic material transferred to the bacterial cells in an expression vector effective in expressing a DNA sequence encoding 2,5-DKG reductase.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the bacterial cell to which genetic material is transferred is of the genus Erwinia.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said host cell is Erwinia herbicola ATCC 21998.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the host cell is of the genus Acetobacter.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein the host cell is Acetobacter cerinus (IFO 3263).
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the host cell is of the genus Gluconobacter.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein the transfer is by conjugation.
- 9. A microorganism to which genetic material encoding 2,5-DKG reductase is transferred such that said transfer renders a host cell capable of converting glucose to 2,5-DKG but lacking the ability to convert 2,5-DKG to 2-KLG, capable of effecting the conversion of 2,5-DKG into 2-KLG.
- 10. The microorganism of claim 9 wherein the genetic material is an expression vector encoding 2,5-DKG reductase.
- 11. The microorganism of claim 10 which is of the genus Erwinia.
- 12. The microorganism of claim 9 which is of the genus Acetobacter.
