Claims
- 1. An incinerator, comprising a housing defining a combustion chamber, the lower end of the housing having a pair of spaced generally parallel walls that define a trough that extends a substantial portion of the length of the combustion chamber, each wall having a longitudinal recess communicating with said trough, an endless member mounted for movement in each recess, a plurality of conveying members interconnecting said endless members and disposed to extend across said trough, a section of each endless member having a length greater than the length of the trough being free of said conveying members, said sections being disposed in registry with said trough during the combustion operation, so that said conveying members will not be exoosed to the heat of the combustion operation, and means for driving said endless members in an endless path, driving of said endless members causing said conveying members to move through said trough to convey ash from the combustion chamber to a discharge site.
- 2. The incinerator of claim 1, and including a refractory lining on the housing bordering the combustion chamber, and the bottom of the trough constituting a layer of refractory material.
- 3. The incinerator of claim 1, wherein said endless members are chains and said conveying members are cleats.
- 4. The incinerator of claim 1, wherein each endless memher has an upper run and a lower run, each wall having a pair of vertically spaced recesses with the upper recess of each pair receiving said upper run of the respective chain and the lower recess of each pair receiving the lower run of the respective chain.
- 5. The incinerator of claim 4, wherein the bottom of said trough comprises a slab of refractory material, one of said recesses in each wall being located above said slab and the other recess in each wall being located beneath said slab.
- 6. The incinerator of claim 1, and including an inclined chute communicating with said trough, said endless members being constructed and arranged to travel through said chute to convey ash from said trough up said chute to a discharge site.
- 7. The incinerator of claim 6, and including means for spraying a cooling fluid on the ash as it is moved up said inclined chute.
- 8. An incinerator, comprising a housing defining a combustion chamber, the lower end of said housing being provided with a pair of downwardly extending spaced walls that define a trough extending substantially the full length of said combustion chamber, each wall having a longitudinal recess communicating with said trough, a chain disposed for travel in each of said recesses, a plurality of conveying members interconnecting the chains, a section of the length of each chain greater than the length of the trough being free of said conveying members, whereby during the combustion process said sections will be disposed in said recesses and said conveying members will be disposed outside of the combustion chamber, and means for driving the chains in endless travel to thereby move said conveying members throuch said trough to convey ash from said trough to a discharge site outside of said combustion chamber.
- 9. The incinerator of claim 8, wherein the horizontal dimension of each recess is greater than the horizontal dimension of the respective chain, so that the chain is disposed wholely within said recess.
- 10. In an incinerator, a housing defining a combustion chamber, the lower end of said housing provided with a pair of downwardly extending spaced walls that define a trough extending substantially the length of said combustion chamber, each wall having a longitudinal recess communicating with said trough, each recess being defined by an upper generally horizontal surface and a lower generally horizontal surface and an inner vertical surface connecting said upper and lower surfaces, a lip extending vertically downwardly from said upper surface and having a lower edge spaced vertically from said lower surface to provide a gap, said lip being spaced laterally inward from said inner surface to provide a track, a chain disposed for travel in each of said tracks, a plurality of conveying members interconnecting the chains and extending through said gaps, and means for driving the chains in endless travel to thereby move said conveying members through said trough to convey ash from said trough to a discharge site outside of said combustion chamber.
- 11. The incinerator of claim 10, wherein said trough has a bottom composed of a refractory material, said chain having an upper run and a lower run, said recesses disposed above the bottom of said trough and receiving the upper run of the respective chain.
