Claims
- 1. An ashless or low-ash, shear stable automatic transmission fluid which comprises each of the following:
- a) a base oil composed entirely of
- (1) 70 to 99% of hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomer fluid having a viscosity in the range of about 2 to about 10 cSt at 100.degree. C., said oligomer fluid being formed by oligomerization of 1-alkene hydrocarbon having 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule, and hydrogenation of the resultant oligomer, and
- (2) 30 to 1% of hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomer fluid having a viscosity in the range of about 40 to about 120 cSt at 100.degree. C., said oligomer fluid being formed by oligomerization of 1-alkene hydrocarbon having 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule, and hydrogenation of the resultant oligomer;
- b) 1 to 15% of antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprising aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated (1) with at least one inorganic phosphorus acid or anhydride or a partial or total sulfur analog thereof to form a phosphorus-containing succinimide ashless dispersant; or (2) either concurrently or in any sequence with at least one inorganic phosphorus acid or anhydride or a partial or total sulfur analog thereof and at least one boronating agent to form a phosphorus- and boron-containing succinimide ashless dispersant;
- c) up to 30% of seal performance improver;
- d) up to 1% of antioxidant;
- e) up to 0.5% of corrosion inhibitor;
- f) up to 0.01% of foam inhibitor;
- g) up to 0.5% of copper corrosion inhibitor;
- h) up to 1% of friction modifier; and
- i) up to 1.5% of lubricity agent;
- the forgoing percentages being by weight based on the total weight of the automatic transmission fluid, said automatic transmission fluid being further characterized by being devoid of high molecular weight viscosity index improver or by containing no more that 10 percent by weight of high molecular weight viscosity index improver; by being devoid of metal-containing components or by containing on a weight basis no more than about 100 parts per million of metal as one or more metal-containing components; and by having (i) a kinematic viscosity of at least 5.5 cSt at 100.degree. C. and a Brookfield viscosity of less than 20,000 cP at -40.degree. C., or (ii) a kinematic viscosity of at least 6.8 cSt at 100.degree. C. and a Brookfield viscosity of less than 50,000 cP at -40.degree. C.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprises aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated with at least one inorganic phosphorus acid or anhydride or a partial or total sulfur analog thereof to form a phosphorus-containing succinimide ashless dispersant.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprises aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated with phosphorous acid, H.sub.3 PO.sub.3, to form a phosphorus-containing succinimide ashless dispersant.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprises aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated either concurrently or in any sequence with at least one inorganic phosphorus acid or anhydride or a partial or total sulfur analog thereof and at least one boronating agent to form a phosphorus-and boron-containing succinimide ashless dispersant.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4 wherein said boronating agent is a boron acid, boron ester, or boron oxide.
- 6. A composition according to claim 4 wherein said boronating agent is boric acid.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein said antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprises aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated either concurrently or in any sequence with phosphorous acid, H.sub.3 PO.sub.3, and at least one boronating agent to form a phosphorus-and boron-containing succinimide ashless dispersant.
- 8. A composition according to claim 7 wherein said boronating agent is boric acid.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the aliphatic group of said hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide used in forming said antiwear/extreme pressure agent is derived from polyisobutene having a number average molecular weight of about 500-5,000, and wherein the amine used in forming said succinimide is a mixture of cyclic and acyclic polyethylene polyamines in which the average number of nitrogen atoms per molecule is in the range of from 3 to 6.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 further characterized by having a kinematic viscosity of at least 6.8 cSt at 100.degree. C. and a Brookfield viscosity of less than 20,000 cP at -40.degree. C.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 further characterized by being devoid of high molecular weight polymeric viscosity index improver.
- 12. An additive concentrate comprising at least the following:
- A) hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomer fluid having a viscosity in the range of about 40 to about 120 cSt at 100.degree. C., said oligomer fluid being formed by oligomerization of 1-alkene hydrocarbon having 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule, and hydrogenation of the resultant oligomer; and
- B) antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprising aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated (1) with at least one inorganic phosphorus acid or anhydride or a partial or total sulfur analog therefor to form a phosphorus-containing succinimide ashless dispersant; or (2) either concurrently or in any sequence with at least one inorganic phosphorus acid or anhydride or a partial or total sulfur analog thereof and at least one boronating agent to form a phosphorus- and boron-containing succinimide ashless dispersant;
- said concentrate being characterized by forming a fluid composition having
- (a) a kinematic viscosity of at least 5.5 cSt at 100.degree. C. and a Brookfield viscosity of less than 20,000 cP at -40.degree. C., or
- (b) a kinematic viscosity of at least 6.8 cSt 100.degree. C. and a Brookfield viscosity of less than 50,000 cP at -40.degree. C., and
- (c) no metal-containing additives or at most no more than about 100 parts per million on a weight basis of metal as one or more metal-containing components,
- when blended at one or more concentrations below 10 percent by weight with hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomer fluid having a viscosity in the range of about 2 to about 10 cSt at 100.degree. C. formed by oligomerization of 1-alkene hydrocarbon having 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule, and hydrogenation of the resultant oligomer.
- 13. A composition according to claim 12 further characterized in that said concentrate, when blended at one or more concentrations below 6 percent by weight in hydrogenated poly-.alpha.-olefin oligomeric fluid having a viscosity in the range of about 2 to about 10 cSt at 100.degree. C., forms a fluid composition having a kinematic viscosity of at least 6.8 cSt at 100.degree. C. and a Brookfield viscosity of less than 20,000 cP at -40.degree. C.
- 14. A composition according to claim 12 wherein said antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprises aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated with phosphorous acid, H.sub.3 PO.sub.3, to form a phosphorus-containing succinimide ashless dispersant.
- 15. A composition according to claim 12 wherein said antiwear/extreme pressure agent comprises aliphatic hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide having at least one primary or secondary amino group and/or at least one hydroxyl group, said succinimide being heated either concurrently or in any sequence with phosphorous acid, H.sub.3 PO.sub.3, and at least one boronating agent to form a phosporus-and boron-containing succinimide ashless dispersant.
- 16. A composition according to claim 12 wherein the aliphatic group of said hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide used in forming said antiwear/extreme pressure agent is derived from polyisobutene having a number average molecular weight of about 500-5,000, and wherein the amine used in forming said succinimide is a mixture of cyclic and acyclic polyethylene polyamines in which the average number of nitrogen atoms per molecule is in the range of from 3 to 6.
