Claims
- 1. In a die-cutting press, a roll assembly comprising: a substantially solid shaftless die-cutting roll having at least one cutting element on its outer cylindrical surface, having a gear portion on one end thereof, and having means adjacent each of its opposite ends for rotating engagement of securing means therewith, said engagement means defining a recess extending axially inwardly from each of the opposite ends of said roll; and a highly rigid support member adapted for fixed mounting adjacent said roll and comprising a frame extending thereabout, said frame having securing means affixed therein for engagement with said engagement means of said roll, and comprising a pair of axially aligned, inwardly directed rods mounted in said frame adjacent said opposite ends of said roll, each of said rods having on its inner end bearing portion dimensioned and configured to engage within a corresponding one of said end recesses to thereby journal said roll within said frame and cooperatively provide stability in the press.
- 2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said rods are removably mounted in said frame, thereby adapting said assembly to comprise die-cutting rolls, and corresponding rods, of varying lengths.
- 3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said frame includes means biasing one of said rods inwardly and means engaging at least one of said rods for axial adjustment, whereby the lateral position of said die-cutting roll secured therebetween can readily be adjusted and said assembly can comprise rolls of varying lengths.
- 4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said end recesses and said bearing portions of said rods are of conical configuration.
- 5. An adapter device for fixed mounting in a press for supporting a shaftless die-cutting roll having engagement means defining a recess extending axially inwardly from each of the opposite ends thereof, comprising a highly rigid frame dimensioned and configured to extend about the die-cutting roll, said frame having securing means comprised of a pair of axially aligned, inwardly directed rods mounted in said frame, each of said rods having on its inner end a bearing portion dimensioned and configured to engage within a corresponding one of the end recesses of the roll, to thereby journal the roll within said frame and cooperatively provide stability in the press.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said rods are removably mounted in said frame, thereby adapting said device for utilization with die-cutting rolls, and corresponding rods, of varying lengths.
- 7. The device of claim 5 wherein said frame includes means biasing one of said rods inwardly, and means engaging at least one of said rods for axial adjustment, whereby the lateral position of the die-cutting roll secured therebetween can readily be adjusted, and rolls of varying lengths can be employed therewith.
- 8. The device of claim 5 wherein said end recesses and said bearing portions of said rods are of conical configuration.
