Claims
- 1. A reclosable metal can made from thin gauge, hard temper metal comprising a cylindrical sidewall, bottom end wall, converging neck extending upwardly and radially inwardly from said sidewall, a cylindrical chimney projecting upwardly from the top of said neck, an outwardly projecting shoulder between said neck and said chimney, and a threaded plastic sleeve having a cylindrical inner surface encircling said chimney and a throat portion below said cylindrical inner surface having a larger diameter than the cylindrical inner surface, and a plurality of inwardly projecting splines in said throat portion aligned generally parallel with the axis of the sleeve and firmly engaging said shoulder on said metal can to restrain said sleeve against rotation on said chimney, and wherein said chimney has a top edge portion thereof turned outwardly and downwardly over a top edge portion of said sleeve.
- 2. A reclosable metal can as set forth in claim 1 in which said can comprises a drawn and ironed aluminum can body and said neck and chimney have been formed by progressive die necking.
- 3. A reclosable metal can as set forth in claim 1 which has a plurality of channels in said outwardly projecting shoulder between said neck and said chimney and said splines are interlocked with said channels.
- 4. A reclosable metal can as set forth in claim 1 in which said outwardly extending shoulder has a plurality of depressions in it that have been formed by said splines on said plastic sleeve.
- 5. A lightweight reclosable can assembly comprising a can body made from thin gauge, hard temper aluminum alloy comprising a drawn and ironed sidewall, a bottom end wall, a neck converging inwardly and upwardly from said sidewall, a chimney on top of said neck and an outwardly projecting shoulder between said neck and said shoulder and a threaded plastic sleeve having a cylindrical inner surface encircling said chimney and a throat portion tapering downwardly and outwardly from said cylindrical inner surface, said sleeve being restrained against rotation on said chimney by splines projecting radially inwardly from said throat portion of said sleeve, said splines being aligned generally parallel with the axis of the sleeve, and interlocking with metal of said shoulder on said can contiguous said sleeve, and wherein said chimney has a top edge portion thereof turned outwardly and downwardly over a top edge portion of said sleeve.
- 6. A reclosable can assembly as set forth in claim 5 which includes a plurality of channels in said outwardly projecting shoulder between said neck and said chimney, and said splines are interlocked with said plurality of channels.
- 7. A reclosable can assembly as set forth in claim 5 in which said sleeve has an outwardly projecting annular bead on its outer surface at approximately the same height on the sleeve as said splines on the inner surface of the sleeve.
- 8. A reclosable can assembly as set forth in claim 5 in which each of said splines has an inwardly convex horizontal cross-section and tapers to a reduced inward projection at its bottom end.
- 9. A reclosable can assembly as set forth in claim 5 having a plastic closure on said sleeve.
