Abstract
An online system implemented as an interactive method that assigns Universal Media Code (UMC) numbers to requesting owners of media files (audio, video and graphical image and other content) and then accepts information from the media owner relating to the cataloging, access and pricing of their media which is located on one or more owner controlled web servers connected to the Internet. In one embodiment, when an owner requests one or more UMC numbers they are charged a variable fee based on the number of UMC's desired and the business revenue status of the owner. Once the UMC's are assigned, the owner securely accesses them in the UMC database with a request to catalog a particular media product that he owns. Following an interactive method, the owner enters required data and then enables the UMC record.

Claims
  • 1. A computer-implemented method comprising: receiving requests from digital media content owners to register digital media content items that reside on a plurality of independent web servers connected to the Internet;assigning a universal media code records to corresponding digital media content items in response to the received requests from the digital media content owners;maintaining a repository of information identifying a plurality of digital media content items; anddistributing information corresponding to the digital media content, each item of digital media content having an associated unique universal media code record.
  • 2. The method of claim 1 wherein distributing information comprises transmitting information to a plurality of different server computers on a network.
  • 3. The method of claim 2 wherein distributing information comprises transmitting information to one or more search engines.
  • 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more search engines are independently owned and operated.
  • 5. A system comprising: a repository of information identifying a plurality of digital media content items, each item of digital media content having an associated unique universal media code record;one or more software processes executing on one or more computer systems, the one or more software processes configured to perform operations comprising:receive requests from digital media content owners to register digital media content items that reside on a plurality of independent web servers connected to the Internet;assign a universal media code records to corresponding digital media content items in response to the received requests from the digital media content owners;maintain the repository of information identifying a plurality of digital media content items; anddistribute information corresponding to the digital media content.
  • 6. The system of claim 5 wherein distributing information comprises transmitting information to a plurality of different server computers on a network.
  • 7. The system of claim 6 wherein distributing information comprises transmitting information to one or more search engines.
  • 8. The system of claim 5 wherein the one or more search engines are independently owned and operated.
