Claims
- 1. A prosthetic femoral hip stem comprising posterior, anterior, medial, and lateral faces; a proximal region; and a distal region, said distal region further including:
- (a) a center;
- (b) a distal axis intersecting said distal center longitudinally;
- (c) a distal tip; and
- (d) an internal slot extending proximally from the distal tip along said distal axis; wherein a cross-section of said distal region taken perpendicular to said distal axis includes a first axis passing through said section in the medial/lateral direction and a second axis positioned centrally within said slot and perpendicular to said distal axis, wherein said first and second axes define an acute angle at said distal center to cut said distal region into two separate tines, each of said tines having an outer surface.
- 2. The stem of claim 1, wherein said angle is from about 15 to about 60 degrees, thereby cutting said distal region into a posterior/lateral tine and an anterior/lateral tine.
- 3. The stem of claim 2, wherein said angle is about 30 degrees.
- 4. The stem of claim 2, wherein said distal region further includes at least one groove positioned on the outer surface of at least one of said tines.
- 5. The stem of claim 1, wherein said distal end has an elliptically tapered configuration.
- 6. A prosthetic femoral implant stem having a proximal region and a distal region, said distal region comprising:
- a central longitudinal axis lying along both a medial-lateral and an anterior-posterior plane bisecting said stem, the intersection of said plane forming four quadrants; and
- a slot formed in said distal region of said stem extending proximally from a distal tip of said stem, said slot oriented in a plane lying along said axis, said plane of said slot bisecting an anterior-medial quadrant and a posterior-lateral quadrant of said four quadrants.
- 7. The stem of claim 6, wherein said plane is oriented at an angle along said axis, said angle measuring from about 15 degrees to about 60 degrees.
- 8. The stem of claim 7, wherein said angle is about 30 degrees.
