Claims
- 1. A composition for inhibiting the corrosion of metals in the presence of weakly acidic to weakly basic electrolytes comprising a compound of formula I: ##STR8## in which R is C.sub.8-18 alkyl,
- R.sub.1 is C.sub.2-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.2 is hydrogen or methyl,
- x is 1-15,
- and M is hydrogen, an alkali metal ion or an equivalent of an alkaline earth metal or zinc ion, in association with a carrier.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 in which the carrier is an aqueous carrier.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 in which zinc ions are present.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 in which components (a) and (b) are present, of which (a) is one or more compounds of formula I, and (b) is one or more compounds selected from mercaptobenzothiazoles, benzotriazoles and sodium boroheptonate.
- 5. A composition according to claim 4 in which are present components (a),(b) and (c), of which (a) and (b) are as defined in claim 4 and (c) is one or more compounds selected from pH-adjusting agents, biocides, anti-scaling agents, mild oxidizing agents and surfactants.
- 6. A corrosion-inhibiting composition according to claim 1 comprising 1-60% by weight of compound of formula I, together with a zinc salt; one or more compounds selected from mercaptobenzothiazoles, benzotriazoles, and sodium boroheptonate; and one or more compounds selected from pH-adjusting agents, biocides, anti-scaling agents, mild oxidizing agents and surfactants, all dissolved in a solvent.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 in which the compound of formula I has the structure I': ##STR9## in which R' is C.sub.8-18 alkyl
- R.sub.1 ' is C.sub.2-4 alkyl
- x' is 3-12
- and M' is Na, K, 1/2Ca or 1/2Zn.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 in which the compound of formula I has the structure I": ##STR10## in which R" is C.sub.12-16 alkyl
- R.sub.1 " is C.sub.2-4 alkyl
- x" is 6-9
- and M" is Na, K or 1/2Zn.
- 9. A composition according to claim 5 in which the biocide is 5,5' dichloro-2,2'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane.
- 10. A composition according to claim 5 in which the antiscaling agent is gluconic acid, mannonic acid or sodium heptonate.
- 11. A composition according to claim 5 in which the mild oxidizing agent is nitrate ion.
- 12. A composition according to claim 1 which is a suspension.
- 13. A composition according to claim 1 in which M of the compound is sodium.
- 14. A composition according to claim 13 in which R is tridecyl, R.sup.1 is n-butyl and x is 7.
