Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR25## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkoxy radicals having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.5 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; y is 2; and X is ##STR26##
- 2. A method of processing a silica-filled rubber composition which comprises (i) 100 parts by weight of at least one sulfur vulcanizable elastomer selected from conjugated diene homopolymers and copolymers and from copolymers of at least one conjugated diene and aromatic vinyl compound;
- (ii) 10 to 250 phr of particulate precipitated silica;
- (iii) 0.05 to 10 phr of an asymmetrical siloxy compound of the formula ##STR27## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkoxy radicals having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.5 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; y is 2; and X is ##STR28##
- 3. A sulfur vulcanizable rubber composition comprising an elastomer containing olefinic unsaturation, silica and a compound of the formula wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkoxy radicals having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.5 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene groups having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; y is 2; and X is ##STR29##
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said asymmetrical siloxy compound is added in an amount ranging from 0.10 to 5.0 phr.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein a symmetrical sulfur containing organosilicon compound is present and is of the formula:
- Z-Alk-Sn-Alk-Z
- in which Z is selected from the group consisting of ##STR30## where R.sup.4 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, cyclohexyl or phenyl;
- R.sup.5 is alkoxy of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or cycloalkoxy of 5 to 8 carbon atoms;
- Alk is a divalent hydrocarbon of 1 to 18 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 2 to 8.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said sulfur vulcanizable elastomer containing olefinic unsaturation is selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, neoprene, polyisoprene, butyl rubber, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, styrene/isoprene/butadiene rubber, methyl methacrylate-butadiene copolymer, isoprene-styrene copolymer, methyl methacrylate-isoprene copolymer, acrylonitrile-isoprene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, EPDM and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said silica-filled rubber composition is thermomechanically mixed at a rubber temperature in a range of from 140.degree. C. to 190.degree. C. for a mixing time of from 1 to 20 minutes.
- 8. The process of claim 7 comprising the sequential steps of:
- (A) thermomechanically mixing in at least one preparatory mixing step to a temperature of about 140.degree. C. to about 190.degree. C. for a total mixing time of about 2 to about 20 minutes (i) 100 parts by weight of at least one sulfur vulcanizable elastomer selected from conjugated diene homopolymers and copolymers and copolymers of at least one conjugated diene and aromatic vinyl compound; (ii) about 15 to about 100 phr of particulate filler selected from the group consisting of precipitated silica, alumina, aluminosilicate, carbon black and mixtures thereof; (iii) about 0.05 to about.20 parts by weight per part by weight of said particulate filler of at least one said asymmetrical siloxy compound; and (iv) at least one sulfur donor having a property of releasing at least a portion of sulfur at a temperature in a range of about 140.degree. C. to about 190.degree. C. and selected from the group consisting of elemental sulfur, an amine disulfide, polymeric polysulfide and sulfur olefin adducts; provided, however, that the total free sulfur from said sulfur donor addition is in a range of about 0.05 to about 2 phr; and
- (B) subsequently blending therewith, in a final thermomechanical mixing step at a temperature to about 100.degree. C. to about 130.degree. C. for a time of about 1 to about 3 minutes, about 0.4 to about 3 phr of elemental sulfur provided, however that the total of free sulfur introduced in said preparatory mixing steps and elemental sulfur added in said final mixing step is in a range of about 0.45 to about 5 phr. ##STR31## and z is 2.
- 9. The composition of claim 3 wherein said asymmetrical siloxy compound is present in an amount ranging from 0.05 to 10.0 phr.
- 10. The composition of claim 3 wherein a symmetrical sulfur containing organosilicon compound is present and is of the formula:
- Z-Alk-Sn-Alk-Z
- in which Z is selected from the group consisting of ##STR32## where R.sup.4 is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, cyclohexyl or phenyl;
- R.sup.5 is alkoxy of 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or cycloalkoxy of 5 to 8 carbon atoms;
- Alk is a divalent hydrocarbon of 1 to 18 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 2 to 8.
- 11. The composition of claim 3 wherein said silica is present in an amount ranging from 10 to 250 phr.
- 12. The composition of claim 3 wherein said elastomer containing olefinic unsaturation is selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, neoprene, polyisoprene, butyl rubber, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene copolymer, styrene/isoprene/butadiene rubber, methyl methacrylate-butadiene copolymer, isoprene-styrene copolymer, methyl methacrylate-isoprene copolymer, acrylonitrile-isoprene copolymer, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer, EPDM and mixtures thereof.
- 13. The composition of claim 3 wherein said composition was thermomechanically mixed at a rubber temperature in a range of from 140.degree. C. to 190.degree. C. for a total mixing time of from 1 to 20 minutes.
- 14. A sulfur vulcanized rubber composition which is prepared by heating the composition of claim 3 to a temperature ranging from 100.degree. C. to 200.degree. C. in the presence of a sulfur vulcanizing agent.
- 15. The sulfur vulcanized rubber composition of claim 13 in the form of a tire, belt or hose.
- 16. A tire having a tread comprised of the composition of claim 13.
