Claims
- 1. An ATM switching system for transferring an ATM cell received from one of a plurality of incoming highways to one of a plurality of outgoing highways, said ATM switching system comprising:
- a plurality of cell partitioning circuits, corresponding to the incoming highways, each of which cell partitioning circuits divides an ATM cell received from one of the incoming highways into a plurality of partial cells and adds routing information to each of said partial cells, said routing information added to said partial cells being identical to one another;
- a plurality of ATM switches each of which receives partial cells from each of the cell partitioning circuits and independently switches the received partial cells based on the added routing information; and
- a plurality of cell assemble circuits, corresponding to the outgoing highways, each of which cell assemble circuits receives switched partial cells from each of the switches and assembles the received switched partial cells into an ATM cell to be transferred to one of the outgoing highways from one of the incoming highways.
- 2. An ATM switching system according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a plurality of error correction code generating circuits, one of which is provided between each of said cell partitioning circuits and a corresponding incoming highway; and
- a plurality of error correction circuits, one of which is provided for each of said cell assemble circuits,
- wherein a partial cell erroneously switched by any of said ATM switches is corrected to provide a correct ATM cell for transference to a corresponding outgoing highway.
- 3. An ATM switching system according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a plurality of error detection code generating circuits, one of which is provided between each of said cell partitioning circuits and a corresponding incoming highway; and
- a plurality of error detection circuits, one of which is provided for each of said cell assemble circuits,
- wherein occurrence of an error in any of said ATM switches is detected.
- 4. An ATM switching system comprising:
- a plurality of incoming highways;
- a plurality of outgoing highways;
- a plurality of cell partitioning circuits, corresponding to the incoming highways, each of which cell partitioning circuits divides an ATM cell received from one of the incoming highways into a plurality of partial cells and adds routing information to each of said partial cells, said routing information added to said partial cells being identical to one another;
- a plurality of ATM switches each of which has a plurality of input lines and a plurality of output lines, each ATM switch independently transfers the partial cells received from each of the cell partitioning circuits through the input lines to the output lines based on the added routing information; and
- a plurality of cell assemble circuits corresponding to the outgoing highways, each of said cell assemble circuits receives switched partial cells from each of the switches through one of the output lines of the switches and assembles the received switched partial cells into an ATM cell to be transferred to one of the outgoing highways from one of the incoming highways.
- 5. An ATM switching system according to claim 4, further comprising:
- a plurality of error correction code generating circuits, one of which is provided between each of said cell partitioning circuits and a corresponding incoming highway; and
- a plurality of error correction circuits, one of which is provided for each of said cell assemble circuits,
- wherein a partial cell erroneously switched by any of said ATM switches is corrected to provide a correct ATM cell for transference to a corresponding outgoing highway.
- 6. An ATM switching system according to claim 4, further comprising:
- a plurality of error detection code generating circuits, one of which is provided between each of said cell partitioning circuits and a corresponding incoming highway; and
- a plurality of error detection circuits, one of which is provided for each of said cell assemble circuits,
- wherein occurrence of an error in any of said ATM switches is detected.
- 7. An ATM cell switching method of transferring an ATM cell received from one of a plurality of incoming highways to one of a plurality of outgoing highways in a switching system, said ATM switching method comprising the steps of:
- dividing a received ATM cell into a plurality of partial cells;
- adding routing information to each of the divided partial cells, said routing information added to said partial cells being identical to one another;
- distributing each of the partial cells, including said routing information, to each of a plurality of ATM switches;
- independently switching, in individual ATM switches, the distributed partial cells based on the added routing information of the partial cells; and
- receiving the switched partial cells and assembling the received switched partial cells into ATM cells, each to be transferred to one of the outgoing highways from one of the incoming highways.
