Claims
- 1. A higher rate Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) telecommunications switch for switching signals of a data rate higher than a normal port rate, comprising: a plurality of parallel data switching planes, a parallel control plane and a central switching unit for each data switching plane, each data plane having an equal number of input ports and output ports, the switching unit being arranged to switch any input port to any output port of the same data plane under the control of the control plane, at least one input port and one output port being higher rate ports for switching said higher data rate signals, wherein the higher rate input port has a plurality of links each to a separate input of the switching unit, and wherein the higher rate output port has the same number of said links each from a separate output of the switching unit thereto.
- 2. A telecommunications switch as claimed in claim 1, wherein the signals on the links are spaced one timeslot apart in phase.
- 3. A telecommunications switch as claimed in claim 1, wherein the links of each higher rate input port and the links of a corresponding linked higher rate output port form a set, and wherein there is a plurality of sets of links, the signals on the links being spaced one timeslot apart in phase, and wherein the signals of the sets are offset in time.
- 4. A telecommunications switch as claimed in claim 3, further comprising port controllers for sequentially establishing the sets of links, said port controllers being the portion of the parallel control plane which controls the output to a particular port.
- 5. A telecommunications switch as claimed in claim 2, further comprising rotator means for connecting each port cyclically to each timeslot of the central switching unit.
