Claims
- 1. An atomic oxygen reactor, comprising:
- a gas chamber for flowing gas therethrough in an axial direction;
- a source of gas containing atomic oxygen, connected to said chamber, for introduction of said gas into said chamber;
- at least one sidearm conduit in fluid communication with said gas chamber and extending transversely therefrom; and
- means for positioning a sample to be exposed to said atomic oxygen transversely across an end of said sidearm conduit disposed from said chamber for substantially uniform reaction therewith;
- wherein said at least one sidearm conduit is constructed and arranged such that a characteristic diffusional relaxation time of said at least one sidearm conduit is substantially less than the time required for all atomic oxygen in the sidearm conduit to recombine.
- 2. An atomic oxygen reactor, comprising:
- a gas chamber having an inlet and an outlet and comprising means for flowing gas therethrough in an axial direction;
- a source of gas, containing atomic oxygen, connected to the inlet of said chamber for introduction of said gas into said chamber;
- at least one sidearm conduit in fluid communication with said gas chamber between said inlet and said outlet and extending transversely relative to the axis upon which gas is caused to flow through said gas chamber; and
- means for positioning a sample to be exposed to said atomic oxygen within said at least one sidearm conduit in a portion of said sidearm conduit spaced from said chamber for substantially uniform reaction with said atomic oxygen;
- wherein said at least one sidearm conduit is constructed and arranged such that a characteristic diffusional relaxation time of said at least one sidearm conduit is substantially less than the time required for all atomic oxygen in the sidearm conduit to recombine.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said sample to be exposed to said atomic oxygen extends transversely across said portion of said sidearm conduit spaced from said chamber.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said at least one sidearm conduit comprises a plurality of sidearm conduits extending from said gas chamber and mutually and angularly spaced around said gas chamber.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said sidearm conduits extend outwardly from said gas chamber along respective radial axes relative to the axis upon which said gas is caused to flow through said gas chamber.
