Claims
- 1. A fluid delivery device, comprising:an elongated tube having proximal and distal ends and defining a lumen and at least one port opening in a side of the tube communicating with said lumen; and at least one sleeve substantially shorter than said tube, having distal and proximal ends, surrounding a portion of the tube, positioned over said at least one port to define a passageway between the tube and sleeve, said passageway communicating with said at least one port to provide a path for fluid flow from within said lumen to outside said delivery device, wherein the sleeve is sealed at the proximal end and open at the distal end.
- 2. The fluid delivery device according to claim 1, wherein said tube comprises plural tube sections, including at least a proximal section having a first outside diameter and a distal section having a second outside diameter, wherein said at least one port and sleeve are located in said distal section.
- 3. The fluid delivery device according to claim 2, wherein said second outside diameter is smaller than said first outside diameter and said at least one sleeve has an outside diameter approximately the same as the first outside diameter.
- 4. A fluid delivery device, comprising:an elongated tube having proximal and distal ends and defining a lumen and at least one port opening in a side of the tube communicating with said lumen; at least one sleeve substantially shorter than said tube, having distal and proximal ends, surrounding a portion of the tube, positioned over said at least one port to define a passageway between the tube and sleeve, said passageway communicating with said at least one port to provide a path for fluid flow from within said lumen to outside said delivery device; and a core wire extending through at least a portion of said lumen, the core wire including a portion proximate the at least one port.
- 5. The fluid delivery device according to claim 4, wherein the core wire has proximal and distal ends with the proximal end being bent to form an elbow, with the end proximal to said elbow secured within the wall of the elongated tube.
- 6. The fluid delivery device according to claim 4, wherein the core wire extends out of the tube distal end and is surrounded by a distal coil spring tip.
- 7. The fluid delivery device according to claim 4, wherein the core wire has a proximal end and said elongated tube has a wall, and said proximal end of the core wire is welded into the wall of said elongated tube.
- 8. The fluid delivery device according to claim 4, wherein a portion of said core wire is tapered.
- 9. The fluid delivery device according to claim 8, wherein said core wire has a tapered configuration selected to minimize shear stress and reduce bubble formation in pressurized gas supersaturated fluids flowing therethrough.
- 10. The fluid delivery device according to claim 8, wherein:the elongated tube comprises at least two sections, a proximal section having a first inner diameter and a distal section having a second inner diameter less than the first inner diameter; and the core wire is secured to the tube in the proximal section and has a reduced diameter through the distal section.
- 11. The fluid delivery device according to claim 10, further comprising a coiled spring tip filled with a flexible material.
- 12. A fluid delivery device, comprising:an elongated tube having proximal and distal ends and defining a lumen and at least one port opening in a side of the tube communicating with said lumen; and a plurality of sleeves substantially shorter than said tube, having distal and proximal ends, surrounding a portion of the tube, positioned over said at least one port to define a passageway between the tube and sleeves, said passageway communicating with said at least one port to provide a path for fluid flow from within said lumen to outside said delivery device wherein the plurality of sleeves are disposed in the distal section of said elongated tube, wherein each sleeve defines around the tube an annular fluid passageway communicating with a plurality of ports.
- 13. A fluid delivery device, comprising:a tubular housing generally arranged along a longitudinal axis having proxinal and distal ends and a housing wall defining a central fluid lumen communicating with side ports in the housing wall, wherein the tubular housing comprises a proximal tube section and a distal diffuser section having a flexibility greater than the proximal tube section, and wherein the tubular housing comprises an intermediate tube section disposed between the proximal tube section and the diffuser section; and at least one tubular sheath disposed about the tubular housing to define a fluid channel between the tubular housing and the tubular sheath for axially directing fluid exiting the side ports, wherein the side ports and the at least one tubular sheath are disposed in the distal diffuser section, and wherein the proximal tube section has a first outer diameter, the intermediate section has an outer diameter substantially the same as the first outer diameter, the diffuser section has a second smaller diameter and the at least one tubular sheath disposed around the diffuser section has an outer diameter substantially the same as the first outer diameter.
- 14. The fluid delivery device according to claim 13, wherein said tubular housing has a strength sufficient to withstand internal fluid pressures of at least about 500 psi.
- 15. A fluid delivery device, comprising:a tubular housing generally arranged along a longitudinal axis having proximal and distal ends and a housing wall defining a central fluid lumen communicating with side ports in the housing wall, wherein the tubular housing comprises a proximal tube section and a distal diffuser section having a flexibility greater than the proximal tube section; and at least one tubular sheath disposed about the tubular housing to define a fluid channel between the tubular housing and the tubular sheath for axially directing fluid exiting the side ports, wherein the side ports and the at least one tubular sheath are disposed in the distal diffuser section; and a core wire secured to the housing wall adjacent the distal end of the proximal tube section and extending through the fluid lumen of the diffuser section, the core wire being tapered to a smaller diameter in the distal direction.
- 16. The fluid delivery device according to claim 15, wherein the core wire has a proximal end and said proximal end is secured into the tubular housing wall.
- 17. The fluid delivery device according to claim 15, wherein the diffuser section has a smaller inside diameter than the proximal tube section, and said core wire creates an annular fluid lumen through the diffuser section, said core wire taper being configured and dimensioned to reduce shear stress and bubble formation in pressurized oxygen supersaturated fluids directed therethrough.
- 18. The fluid delivery device according to claim 17, wherein the diffuser section is bonded to the core wire at the diffuser section distal end to terminate the fluid lumen.
- 19. The fluid delivery device according to claim 18, wherein the core wire extends out of the distal end of the diffuser section and has a coil tip secured thereto.
- 20. A fluid delivery device, comprising:a tubular housing generally arranged along a longitudinal axis having proximal and distal ends and a housing wall defining a central fluid lumen communicating with side ports in the housing wall; and a plurality of relatively short tubular sleeves each disposed around a portion of the tubular housing, spaced apart and each positioned over at least one side port to define a fluid channel along the outside of the tubular housing communicating with the side port, each tubular sleeve being sealed to the tubular housing at one end.
- 21. A fluid delivery device, comprising:a first tubular housing defining a fluid lumen therethrough having housing wall, wherein the housing has a proximal end and a distal end; a core wire having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the proximal end of the core wire is secured in the housing wall adjacent to the distal end of the tubular housing, said core wire having a tapered configuration selected to reduce shear stress and bubble formation in high pressure oxygen supersaturated fluids delivered through said device; a second tubular housing having greater flexibility that the first housing, extending circumferentially around at least a portion of the core wire, said second housing having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a continuation of the fluid lumen, wherein the proximal end of the second tubular housing is attached to the distal end of the first tubular housing; a third tubular housing, extending circumferentially around at least a portion of the core wire, having a proximal end and a distal end and defining a continuation of the fluid lumen and a plurality of outlet ports, wherein the proximal end of the third tubular housing is attached to the distal end of the second tubular housing and the fluid lumen is sealed at the distal end; a plurality of sleeves mounted around the third tubular housing, each sleeve positioned over at least one said outlet port, said sleeves configured to direct flow of fluid out of the outlet ports proximally along a portion of the third tubular housing; and a coil tip mounted at the distal end of the core wire, distal of the third tubular housing.
- 22. A fluid delivery device, comprising:a flexible tubular housing defining a fluid passage therethrough, said tubular housing having proximal and distal ends and further defining at least one port for exit of fluid therefrom; a coiled wire tip secured to the distal end of the tubular housing; and a flexible material filling the coiled wire tip.
- 23. The fluid delivery device according to claim 22, wherein said flexible material is a medical grade rubber material.

The present invention is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 08/669,662, filed Jun. 24, 1996, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,957,899 which was a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 08/563,057, filed Nov. 27, 1995 now U.S. Pat. No. 5,797,876.
