Claims
- 1. Apparatus for performing sequential solvent extraction of a coal liquefaction product stream containing liquids and solids dissolved or suspended therein comprising,
- means containing and supplying a coal liquefaction product stream containing liquids and solids dissolved or suspended therein,
- means defining and containing a supply of virgin solvent mixtures arranged in individual reservoirs,
- a filter having a filter chamber and a filter element having filter pore size of from 0.5 to 10 microns,
- means for delivering metered amounts of individual solvent streams from said supply reservoirs to said filter chamber under a positive pressure and additional means for maintaining said filtration chamber under a positive pressure,
- valve means for controlling the flow of the individual virgin solvent streams from said supply reservoirs to the filter chamber,
- means for ultrasonically agitating the contents of the filter chamber to enhance extraction by agitation,
- means for receiving the solution flowing from said filter and collecting said solution in a plurality of receivers,
- means for delivering the solution from the filter chamber to said receivers in individual streams,
- valve means situated within said means for delivering said solution from said filter to said receivers for controlling the flow of the solution passing from said filter to said receivers,
- means for sensing the endpoint of solvent extraction, said sensing means determining the condition of the solution flowing from said filter to said receiver, and
- control means for sequentially operating said valve means for performing sequential solvent extraction of said coal liquefaction product stream in the sample.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 including
- means for supplying to said filter an inert gas under pressure sufficient to cause the flow of the solvent through said filter element, and
- means for determining when the solvent has emptied from the filter chamber.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said supply of solvent mixtures comprises at least three solvents of different solvent properties.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said filter is made of a non-corrosive material and has the filter contact surfaces thereof coated with Teflon.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for delivering metered amounts of individual solvent streams to said filter chamber comprises a receiver having a predetermined volume and adapted to receive flow from said reservoirs and valve means for controlling flow from said receiver to said filter chamber.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for agitating the contents of the filter chamber comprises an ultrasonic transducer mounted on said filter and having a probe extending into said filter chamber.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said means for sensing the endpoint of solvent extraction comprises an ultraviolet detector having a feedback loop and adapted to sense a spectrophotometric response that matches said feedback loop.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 1 including means for supplying to said filter an inert gas under pressure sufficient to cause the flow of solvent through said filter element.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 8 including valve means for controlling the supply of said inert gas to said filter.
