Claims
- 1. A method for automatically infeeding a workpiece to a saw, under control of a computer, comprising the steps of:selecting a first workpiece provided on a chain conveyor; measuring a first dimension of said first workpiece; projecting a pattern from a plurality of patterns, based on said first dimension and on optimizing yield, on said first workpiece; allowing an operator to select an alternative pattern from said plurality of patterns by moving said first workpiece under said alternative pattern; allowing an operator to skew said first workpiece; moving said first workpiece to an input of said saw; selecting a second workpiece and moving said second workpiece under one of said plurality of patterns; and submitting said first workpiece to said saw input while maintaining said skew.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said first workpiece is advanced for said measuring and said projecting by a belt conveyor adjacent to said chain conveyor, said belt conveyor driven by a servo motor.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said belt conveyor comprises a plurality of spaced friction belts arranged in parallel to support said workpieces.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein each of said plurality of patterns comprises a plurality of straight, parallel lines wherein said lines are spaced corresponding to spacing of saw blades of said saw.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said moving said first workpiece under said alternative pattern is performed by said belt conveyor under control of said computer.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said skew of said first workpiece is determined by manual manipulation by said operator.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said submitting said first workpiece to said saw input comprises placing said first workpiece between pinch rollers, driving said pinch rollers in a substantially vertical direction to capture said workpiece, and rotating said pinch rollers to advance said first workpiece into said saw.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising advancing said first workpiece over a measuring roller for measurement of a second dimension of said first workpiece.
