Claims
- 1. A conveyor apparatus defining a plurality of supporting surfaces for conveying a plurality of packages placed thereon, said apparatus comprising:
a frame; a plurality of substantially rigid platform members disposed end to end in spaced apart relation and mounted for movement relative to said frame along a continuous path, each of said plurality of substantially rigid platform members defining at least one of said supporting surfaces in a substantially planar configuration; a plurality of flexible connectors alternating between and connecting said platform members, said flexible connectors each including two platform engaging portions for engaging adjacent platform members and also including a driven portion; and drive means including flexible connector engagement means for engaging said driven portion of said flexible connectors such that said platform members are driven along said path at least partially under the power of said drive means.
- 2. The conveying apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein said flexible connectors and said substantially rigid platform members combine to form a substantially continuous, upwardly directed conveying surface.
- 3. The conveyor of claim 1, wherein said platform members have a width and said flexible connectors extend substantially the width of said platform members.
- 4. The conveyor of claim 1, wherein said flexible connectors isolate adjacent platform members from contact with each other, and likewise isolate said platform members from contact with said drive means.
- 5. The conveyor of claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of platform members comprises first and second ends, and wherein said first and second ends each comprise retainer slots for receiving said flexible connectors, and wherein said flexible connectors further comprise a first and second flange, said first and second flanges slidably fitting in said retainer slots of said platform members.
- 6. The conveyor of claim 5, wherein said flexible connectors further comprise a strengthening member extending within both of said flanges.
- 7. The conveyor of claim 1, wherein said driven portions of said flexible connectors each comprise a tooth member extending a distance beneath said platform members, said extending tooth members being formed to engage notches disposed on said drive means.
- 8. The conveyor of claim 7 wherein said drive means defines a plurality of radially-oriented notches disposed along the circumferential surface of said drum for engaging said driven portions of said flexible connectors.
- 9. The conveyor of claim 1, wherein at least one of said platform members comprises an ejection mechanism for discharging objects from said conveyor.
- 10. The conveyor of claim 9 wherein said ejection mechanism comprises a pusher member slidably attached to said platform member for pushing items laterally across said platform member.
- 11. The conveyor of claim 10 wherein said one of said platform members further comprises an elongate pusher member slot, said pusher member slot extending substantially along the length of said platform members transverse to the direction of travel of said conveyor, said pusher member slots receiving a lower stem of said pusher member.
- 12. The conveyor of claim 9, wherein said ejection mechanisms is controlled by a programmable logic controller.
- 13. A conveyor apparatus defining a plurality of supporting surfaces for conveying a plurality of packages placed thereon, said apparatus comprising:
a frame; a plurality of substantially rigid platform members disposed end to end in spaced apart relation and mounted for movement relative to said frame along a continuous path, each of said plurality of substantially rigid platform members defining at least one of said supporting surfaces such that it is substantially planar; a plurality of flexible connectors alternating between and connecting said platform members, said flexible connectors each including two platform engaging portions for engaging adjacent platform members and also including a driven portion; and drive means including flexible connector engagement means for engaging said driven portion of said flexible connectors while being isolated from contact with said platform members, such that said platform members are driven along said path at least partially under the power of said drive means.
- 14. The conveying apparatus as claimed in claim 13, wherein said flexible connectors and said substantially rigid platform members combine to form a substantially continuous, upwardly directed conveying surface.
- 15. The conveyor of claim 13, wherein said platform members have a width and said flexible connectors extend substantially the width of said platform members.
- 16. The conveyor of claim 13, wherein said flexible connectors isolate adjacent platform members from contact with each other, and likewise isolate said platform members from contact with said drive means.
- 17. The conveyor of claim 13, wherein each of said plurality of platform members comprises first and second ends, wherein said first and second ends each comprise retainer slots for receiving said flexible connectors, and wherein said flexible connectors further comprise a first and second flange, said first and second flanges slidably fitting in said retainer slots of said platform members.
- 18. The conveyor of claim 17, wherein said flexible connectors further comprise strengthening member extending within both of said flanges.
- 19. The conveyor of claim 13, wherein said driven portions of said flexible connectors each comprise a tooth member extending a distance beneath said platform members, said extending tooth members being formed to engage notches disposed on said drive means.
- 20. The conveyor of claim 19 wherein said drive means defines a plurality of radially-oriented notches disposed along the circumferential surface of said drum for engaging said driven portions of said flexible connectors.
- 21. The conveyor of claim 13, wherein at least one of said platform members comprises an ejection mechanism for discharging objects from said conveyor.
- 22. The conveyor of claim 21 wherein said ejection mechanism comprises a pusher member slidably attached to said platform member for pushing items laterally across said platform member.
- 23. The conveyor of claim 22 wherein said one of said platform members further comprises an elongate pusher member slot, said pusher member slot extending substantially along the length of said platform member transverse to the direction of travel of said conveyor, said pusher member slots receiving a lower stem of said pusher member.
- 24. The conveyor of claim 21, wherein said ejection mechanism is controlled by a programmable logic controller.
- 25. A conveyor apparatus defining at least one package supporting surface for conveying a package placed thereon from a first to a second location, said apparatus comprising:
a stationary frame; a package conveying portion movable relative to said frame for defining said supporting surface and including a moving support member, a pusher member for pushing said packages from said supporting surface; and force transfer means intermediate said pusher member and said moving support member for transferring force from said moving force transfer means to said pusher member, such that said package may be transferred from said supporting surface.
- 26. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 25, wherein said package supporting surface is a substantially horizontal surface.
- 27. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 25, wherein said force transfer means is a lead screw threadably engaged relatively to said moving support member and attached at one end to the pusher member.
- 28. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 27, wherein said lead screw is driven by a motor attached to and moving with said package conveying portion.
- 29. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 28, further comprising polarity reversing means for selectively reversing the polarity of current supplied to said motor.
- 30. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 27, wherein said lead screw is driven by a motor separate and detached from said package conveying portion.
- 31. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 27, further comprising a spring return attached to said lead screw to provide a return function to return said pusher member to a position in which the pusher member is ready to push a package.
- 32. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 25, wherein said force transfer means is a belt in tension intermediate and attached to said moving support member and said pusher member.
- 33. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 32, wherein said belt is an endless belt.
- 34. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claimed in claim 32, wherein said belt is a cogged belt.
- 35. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 32, wherein said belt is driven by an electric motor attached relative to said package conveying portion.
- 36. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 25, wherein said force transfer means is an air-operated bellows intermediate said moving force transfer means and said pusher member.
- 37. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 36, further comprising a second bellows member in parallel with said first bellows member.
- 38. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 37, wherein said bellows member is substantially horizontal.
- 39. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 36, wherein said bellows member is substantially horizontal.
- 40. A conveyor apparatus defining at least one package supporting surface for conveying a package placed thereon from a first to a second location, said apparatus comprising:
a stationary frame; a package conveying portion movable relative to said frame for defining said supporting surface; a pusher member for pushing said package across said supporting surface; and an electric motor attached relative to said package conveying portion for providing energy to urge said pusher member such that it pushes said package across and off of said supporting surface.
- 41. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 40, wherein said pusher member is slidably attached relative to said package conveying portion.
- 42. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 40, further comprising an endless belt intermediate said electric motor and said pusher member for providing a force transfer means intermediate said motor and said pusher member.
- 43. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 40, further comprising a lead screw intermediate said electric motor and said pusher member for providing a force transfer means intermediate said motor and said pusher member.
- 44. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 40, further comprising a spring return attached to said lead screw to provide a return function to return said pusher member to a position in which the pusher member is ready to push a package.
- 45. The conveyor apparatus of claim 43, further comprising a polarity reverser to reverse the polarity of current to said motor so as to drive said lead screw in two directions.
- 46. The conveyor apparatus of claim 40, further comprising a polarity reverser to reverse the polarity of current to said motor so as to drive said lead screw in two directions.
- 47. The conveyor of claim 40, wherein said electric motor comprises a pair of electrical leads, said leads slidably contacting a complementary pair of electrical contacts fixedly located adjacent to said conveyor, wherein said contact of said leads with said contacts energizes said motor to drive said lead screw.
- 48. The conveyor apparatus of claim 47, further comprising a polarity reverser to reverse the polarity of current to said motor so as to drive said lead screw in two directions.
- 49. A conveyor apparatus defining at least one package supporting surface for conveying a package placed thereon from a first to a second location, said apparatus comprising:
a stationary frame; a package conveying portion movable along an endless path relative to said frame for defining said supporting surface; a pusher member for pushing a package from said supporting surface; force transfer means for urging said pusher member across said supporting surface; an electric motor attached relative to said frame, said electric motor including at least one movable electrical lead movable with said motor; and at least one stationary electrical connection attached relative to said frame, said movable electrical connection and said stationary electrical connection being configured for relative sliding contact so as to provide electrical power to said electrical motor while said package conveying portion is in motion along said endless path.
- 50. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 49, wherein said pusher member is driven by a lead screw threadably engaged relative to said package conveying portion.
- 51. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 50, further comprising a spring return on said lead screw to provide a return function to return said pusher member to a position in which the pusher member is ready to push a package.
- 52. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 50, wherein said lead screw includes a pulley at its end, and further comprising an endless belt configured to move along an endless path, said path being substantially stationary and not moving along with said package conveying portion, such that said endless belt can contact and drive said pulley while its rotational axis is moving.
- 53. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 52, wherein said endless belt is a first endless belt and further comprising a second endless belt, said first and second cooperating belts configured to grip said pulley as it passes by.
- 54. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 53, wherein said belts are mounted upon support apparatuses which allow said belts to be selectively moved from a relatively open position allowing said pulley to pass therethrough without being driven thereby to a relatively closed configuration during which said pulley is driven thereby.
- 55. The conveyor apparatus as claimed in claim 54, wherein said belts are wedged apart against spring pressure from said closed to said open position.
