Claims
- 1. A hybrid transmission system for a vehicle, the vehicle having an engine, a drive wheel, a drive shaft connected to the drive wheel for rotating the drive wheel, comprising:
- a transmission gear set substantially arranged as a manual transmission gear set having an input shaft and an output shaft the input shaft being driven by and driving the output shaft, the output shaft being adapted to cause motion of the drive wheel through the drive shaft, the input and output shafts having a plurality of gears which selectively mesh for engagement to vary a relative speed of rotation between the input shaft and the output shaft;
- a plurality of shift motors to effect engagement and disengagement of the gears;
- a clutch for selectively coupling the engine to the transmission;
- a clutch motor for engaging and disengaging the clutch;
- an electric machine connected to the input shaft for selectively increasing and decreasing the speed of the input shaft;
- a selection lever for selecting between one of park, neutral, drive, and reverse conditions for the transmission gear set, the shifter generating a condition signal, wherein a drive condition defines a plurality of forward gear combinations;
- a transmission controller which receives a plurality of input signals, including the condition signal, and generates a plurality of output signals, the output signals controlling the electric machine to vary the speed of the input shaft in order to synchronize engagement of the gears of the transmission and controlling the motors to mesh the gears for engagement, the transmission controller automatically operating the motors and the electric machine for a selected condition; and
- a shift state machine within the transmission controller, the shift state machine controlling changes from one state to another state, wherein the transmission is generally in one of a plurality of states which define a respective plurality of configurations of the transmission.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the transmission is configured in one of eight states, comprising:
- a disengage clutch state in which the clutch is disengaged, defined as state 1;
- a move to neutral state in which the transmission is placed in a neutral gear, defined as state 2;
- a move to desired neutral state in which the transmission is placed in a selected one of a plurality of neutral gears, defined as state 3;
- a move to desired neutral and synchronize state in which the transmission is placed in a selected one of a plurality of neutral gears and is synchronized, defined as state 4;
- a move into desired gear state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, selected gear of a plurality of gears, defined as state 5;
- an in desired gear, engaging clutch state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, desired gear and the clutch is being engaged, defined as state 6;
- an in desired gear with clutch disengaged state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, desired gear and the clutch is disengaged, defined as state 7; and
- an in desired gear with clutch engaged state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, desired gear and the clutch is engaged, defined as state 8.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 1, the shift state machine changes to one of state 1, state 2, state 6, and state 7 in accordance with engagement and disengagement of the clutch and whether the transmission is in a selected one of the plurality of gears.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 2, the shift state machine changes to one of state 2, state 3, and state 4 in accordance with whether the transmission is in neutral and whether the transmission controller outputs a signal directing the transmission to move to neutral.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 3, the shift state machine changes to one of state 3 and state 7 in accordance with whether the transmission is in a selected one of the plurality of gears.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 4, the shift state machine changes to one of state 4 and state 5 in accordance with whether the transmission is in a predetermined neutral and whether the transmission is synchronized.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 5, the shift state machine changes to one of state 2, state 5, state 6, and state 7 in accordance with whether the transmission is in synchronized, in a selected one of the plurality of gears and whether the clutch is commanded to be engaged.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 6, the shift state machine changes to one of state 1, state 6, and state 8 in accordance with whether the clutch is commanded to be engaged and whether the clutch is engaged.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 7, the shift state machine changes to one of state 2, state 6, and state 7 in accordance with whether the transmission is in a selected one of the plurality of gears and whether the clutch is either engaged or disengaged as commanded.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein from state 8, the shift state machine changes to one of state 1, state 6, and state 8 in accordance with whether the transmission is in a selected one of the plurality of gears, whether the clutch is either engaged or disengaged as commanded, and whether the clutch is commanded to be engaged.
- 11. A hybrid transmission system for a vehicle, the vehicle having an engine, a drive wheel, a drive shaft connected to the drive wheel for rotating the drive wheel, comprising:
- a transmission gear set substantially arranged as a manual transmission gear set having an input shaft and an output shaft, the input shaft being driven by and driving the output shaft, the output shaft being adapted to cause motion of the drive wheel through the drive shaft, the input and output shafts having a plurality of gears which selectively mesh for engagement to vary a relative speed of rotation between the input shaft and the output shaft;
- a plurality of shift motors to effect engagement and disengagement of the gears;
- a clutch for selectively coupling the engine to the transmission;
- a clutch motor for engaging and disengaging the clutch;
- an electric machine connected to the input shaft for selectively increasing and decreasing the speed of the input shaft;
- a selection lever for selecting between one of park, neutral, drive, and reverse conditions for the transmission gear set, the shifter generating a condition signal, wherein a drive condition defines a plurality of forward gear combinations;
- a transmission controller which receives a plurality of input signals and generates a plurality of output signals, the output signals controlling the electric machine to vary the speed of the input shaft in order to synchronize engagement of the gears of the transmission and controlling the motors to mesh the gears for engagement, the transmission controller automatically operating the motors and the electric machine for a selected condition; and
- a shift state machine within the transmission controller, the shift state machine controlling changes from one state to another state, wherein the transmission is generally in one of a plurality of states which define a respective plurality of configurations of the transmission;
- wherein the shift state machine selects one of the plurality of states in accordance with at least one of whether the clutch is engaged, whether the transmission is in a predetermined, selected one of the plurality of gears, whether the transmission is synchronized, and whether the clutch is commanded to be engaged.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the transmission is configured in one of eight states, comprising:
- a disengage clutch state in which the clutch is disengaged, defined as state 1;
- a move to neutral state in which the transmission is placed in a neutral gear, defined as state 2;
- a move to desired neutral state in which the transmission is placed in a selected one of a plurality of neutral gears, defined as state 3;
- a move to desired neutral and synchronize state in which the transmission is placed in a selected one of a plurality of neutral gears and is synchronized, defined as state 4;
- a move into desired gear state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, selected gear of a plurality of gears, defined as state 5;
- an in desired gear, engaging clutch state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, desired gear and the clutch is being engaged, defined as state 6;
- an in desired gear with clutch disengaged state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, desired gear and the clutch is disengaged, defined as state 7; and
- an in desired gear with clutch engaged state in which the transmission is placed in a predetermined, desired gear and the clutch is engaged, defined as state 8.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the transmission controller further comprises a logic controller for determining the output signals to generate.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the transmission controller generates a plurality of output signals, comprising:
- a first shift motor signal to control one of the plurality of shift motors;
- a second shift motor signal to another of the plurality of shift motors;
- a clutch motor signal to control actuation of the clutch motor;
- a torque command signal to the electric machine to vary the speed and direction of the electric machine; and
- a torque reduction command signal to the engine to selectively reduce a torque output by the engine while shifting gears of the transmission.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the transmission controller receives a plurality of input signals, comprising:
- a gear select signal varying in accordance with a gear selected by a vehicle operator;
- a plurality of shift motor signals which vary in accordance with the position of each respective shift motor;
- a clutch motor position signal which varies in accordance with the position of the clutch motor;
- an engine revolution per minute (RPM) signal which defines the revolutions per minute at which the engine is turning;
- an input shaft speed signal which varies in accordance with the speed of the input shaft; and
- an output shaft speed signal which varies in accordance with the speed of the output shaft.
