Claims
- 1. A tip depot for securely holding a pipette tip flat, said pipette tip flat holding a plurality of pipette tips in a regular pattern, comprising:
a receiver box having four sides; an alignment grid secured atop said receiver box, said alignment grid forming a plurality of holes registering with said regular pattern of pipette tips of said pipette tip flat; first and second capture blades movably secured atop said receiver box, said first and second capture blades each extending between two opposing sides of said four sides of said receiver box, said first and second capture blades paralleling each other; pusher arm means to accept one or more activator pins for pushing said first and second capture blades outwardly, and; compressible blade spring means which exert an inward force on said first and second capture blades; wherein said first and second capture blades are separated by a distance insufficient to allow passage of said pipette tip flat between them when said compressible blade spring means are in a relaxed state, and said first and second capture blades are separated by a distance sufficient to allow passage of said pipette tip flat between them when said pusher arm means have pushed said first and second capture blades outward.
- 2. The tip depot of claim 1, wherein said alignment grid further comprises at least one upstanding hotel which registers with a slot formed in said pipette tip flat.
- 3. The tip depot of claim 2, wherein said pusher arm means comprises two pairs of pusher arms, each of said pair of pusher arms mounted on each upper edge of opposing sides of said receiver box.
- 4. The tip depot of claim 3, wherein one end of a first pusher arm in each of said pair of pusher arms is attached to said first capture blade, and one end of a second pusher arm in each of said pair of pusher arms is attached to said second capture blade.
- 5. The tip depot of claim 4, wherein two activator pins disposed on a pipette tip flat pickup means each engage with each of said pair of pusher arms when a pipette tip flat is to be delivered to or removed from said tip depot, said activator pins pushing said pusher arms and said first and second capture blades outward such that said pipette tip flat can pass between said first and second capture blades.
- 6. A tip depot for securely holding a pipette tip flat, said pipette tip flat holding a plurality of pipette tips in a regular pattern, comprising:
a receiver box having four sides; an alignment grid secured atop said receiver box, said alignment grid forming a plurality of holes registering with said regular pattern of pipette tips of said pipette tip flat; at least one vertical channel formed in each of at least two sides of said receiver box, and; at least two clips, each of said clips supported on said receiver box and extending over each of said vertical channels, and each of said clips capable of being pivoted between an open and closed position; wherein when said clips are in said closed position, at least a portion of each of said clips extends over said alignment grid such that a distance between said clips is insufficient to allow passage of said pipette tip flat between them, and when said clips are pivoted to said open position, said at least a portion of each of said clips is pivoted away from said alignment grid such that a distance between said clips is sufficient to allow passage of said pipette tip flat between them.
- 7. The tip depot of claim 6, wherein a lip is formed around the perimeter of said alignment grid, and at least one horizontal channel is formed in said lip adjacent to each of said vertical channels.
- 8. The tip depot of claim 7, wherein two of said horizontal channels are formed in said lip adjacent to each of said vertical channels.
- 9. The tip depot of claim 8, wherein each of said clips are generally fork-shaped and include a post and a prong portion disposed on top of said post, said prong portion including a base, a middle prong, and two side prongs disposed on either side of said middle prong, and said middle prong is contiguous with said post and aligned with and adjacent to each of said vertical channels.
- 10. The tip depot of claim 9, wherein at least a portion of each of said side prongs extends through each of said horizontal channels and at least partially over said alignment grid when each of said clips is in said closed position.
- 11. The tip depot of claim 10, wherein in response to contact between gripper legs of a pickup unit with each of said clips, each of said clips pivots away from said receiver box and into said open position, and each of said side prongs of each of said clips retracts into each of said horizontal channels such that no portion of each of said side prongs extends over said alignment grid.
