Claims
- 1. A tissue staining apparatus comprising
a tray capable of holding a plurality of slides, each slide carrying a tissue sample, a rack capable of holding a plurality of reagent containers, a robotic delivery system comprising
a selectively and controllably moveable probe capable of being positioned proximate one reagent container for withdrawing a reagent volume and depositing said reagent volume on a slide according to a staining protocol, and an optical reader comprising a camera capable of capturing an image of a tissue sample held on said slide, and a control system programmable for conducting said staining protocol, said control system operatively coupled to said robotic delivery system for controlling said probe, and said optical reader for retrieving and analyzing said image for programming said staining protocol.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said control system includes a stat function operable for adding stat slides to said tray for staining.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said control system includes a touchscreen display connected in electrical communication with said control system, said touchscreen display operable for displaying information provided by said control system and for inputting information to said control system.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said optical reader is movable with said probe.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said optical reader retrieves reagent and identifying protocol information from a two dimensional storage element located on a label.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the label is on the slide carrying the tissue sample.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the storage element is a two-dimensional bar code.
- 8. An automated slide staining method comprising:
providing in an automated tissue staining apparatus a slide holding a tissue specimen and containing a two-dimensional data element comprising encoded staining protocol information, using an optical reader to decode the staining protocol information and to image the tissue specimen on the slide, and analyzing the image to determine modifications to the staining protocol based upon the image.
- 9. The method of claim 8 further comprising modifying the staining protocol.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein a volume of reagent dispensed on the slide is modified relative to the staining protocol information.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein the modification is selected from the group consisting of reagent incubation time, rinse time, reagent volume, reagent dispense location, and combinations thereof.
- 12. The method of claim 10 including locating the position of the tissue specimen on the slide, calculating the size of said tissue specimen using image analysis, and calculating the volume of said reagent to dispense on the tissue specimen.
- 13. The method of claim 8 wherein the two-dimensional data element includes two-dimensional bar codes.
- 14. The method of claim 8 wherein the two-dimensional data element is also located on a reagent container.
- 15. The method of claim 8 wherein a position of reagent dispensed on the slide is modified relative to the staining protocol information.
- 16. The method of claim 8 wherein the staining protocol information is accessed by an autoprogram.
