Claims
- 1. An apparatus for providing a welding bead on a surface to be welded, the apparatus comprising:an arm supporting a welding torch and the welding torch facilitating welding on a desired surface; a spindle supporting the arm which supports the welding torch, and at least a portion of the spindle carrying a thread; the drive coupled to the spindle for supplying rotational drive to the spindle and causing rotation of the spindle and the welding torch; a framework supporting a clutch, the drive and at least a portion of the spindle, and the clutch being supported by the framework for engagement with the thread carried by the spindle; and the clutch having an engaged position in which the clutch engages with the thread carried by-the spindle to cause axial movement of the spindle, relative to the framework, upon rotation of the spindle by the drive to facilitate the welding torch depositing a spiral weld on the surface to be welded, and a disengaged position in which the clutch is sufficiently spaced from the thread carried by the spindle so that the spindle can be moved axially relative to the framework.
- 2. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the arm which supports the welding torch is pivotally supported by the spindle via a bearing to adjust a diameter of the welding bead to be formed on the surface to be welded.
- 3. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein a locking member facilitates locking the bearing in a desired adjusted position.
- 4. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the framework is coupled to a mounting rod by a support bracket, and the framework and the support bracket are slidable along the mounting rod to adjust an axial spacing of the framework relative the surface to be welded.
- 5. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the thread carried by the exterior surface of the spindle has between 6 and 10 threads per inch.
- 6. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the framework includes a controller coupled to the drive for controlling at least one of a rotational speed of the spindle and a direction of rotation of the spindle.
- 7. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the clutch comprises a clutch arm which supports a threaded section located for mating engagement with the thread carried by the spindle, a first end of the clutch arm is pivotally attached to the framework and a second end of the clutch arm supports a knob, and the clutch arm is biased toward engagement with the thread carried by the spindle.
- 8. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the clutch comprises a clutch arm which supports a threaded section located for mating engagement with the thread carried by the spindle, a first end of the clutch arm is pivotally attached to the framework and a second end of the clutch arm is biased toward engagement with the thread carried by the spindle
- 9. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein the spindle supports a pulley and the drive supports a mating pulley, and a belt couples the pulley of the spindle to the pulley of the drive for supplying rotational drive to the spindle from the drive.
- 10. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 1, wherein an electrical connector which is attached to a transfer tube which is coupled to the arm which supports the welding torch and the bearing, the transfer tube establishes a welding electrical current path from the electrical connector to the welding torch via the bearing and the arm which supports the welding torch; a wire guide is located within the transfer tube for supplying welding wire to the welding torch, via the bearing and the arm which supports the welding torch; and a welding gas path is defined between an exterior surface of the wire guide and an inwardly facing surface of the transfer tube to supply a welding gas to the welding torch via the bearing and the arm which supports the welding torch.
- 11. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 10, wherein a first end of a feed conduit is connected to the transfer tube, the feed conduit contains a wire guide for supplying a welding wire, a gas supply conduit for supplying a welding gas and an electrical path for supplying welding current, and the first end of the feed conduit has a mating electrical connector for engagement with the electrical connector of the transfer tube, and once the mating electrical connectors are engaged with one another, the wire guide of the feed conduit is aligned with the wire guide of the transfer tube to facilitate conveying the welding wire to the welding torch, the gas conduit of the feed conduit is aligned with the gas conduit of the transfer tube to facilitate conveying the welding gas to the welding torch, and the electrical path of the feed conduit is coupled to the electrical path of the transfer tube to facilitate conveying welding current to the welding torch.
- 12. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 11, wherein a second end of the feed conduit is provided with a coupling for connecting the feed conduit to:a welding gas supply for supplying welding gas to the apparatus; an electrical power supply for supplying welding current to the apparatus; and a welding wire supply for supplying welding wire to the apparatus.
- 13. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 11, wherein the feed conduit and the mating electrical connector remain stationary while the transfer tube, the spindle and the welding torch rotate when the spindle is driven by the drive.
- 14. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 10, wherein the transfer tube, the bearing and the arm which supports the welding torch are all sufficiently hollow to supply a welding wire and a welding gas to the welding torch, and are all sufficiently electrically conductive to supply a welding current to the welding torch to facilitate welding of the desired surface.
- 15. An apparatus for providing a welding bead on a surface to be welded, the apparatus comprising:a spindle rotatably supporting a welding torch, and at least a portion of-the spindle having a thread; the drive coupled to the spindle for supplying rotational drive to the spindle and causing rotation of the spindle and the welding torch; a framework supporting a clutch, the drive and at least a portion of the spindle, and the clutch being supported by the framework for engagement with the thread of the spindle; and the clutch having an engaged position in which the clutch engages with the thread of the spindle to cause axial movement of the spindle, relative to the framework, upon rotation of the spindle by the drive to facilitate the welding torch depositing a spiral weld on the surface to be welded, and a disengaged position in which the clutch is sufficiently spaced from the thread-of the spindle so that the spindle can be moved axially relative to the framework.
- 16. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 15, wherein an arm couples the welding torch to the spindle and the arm is pivotally supported by the spindle via a bearing to adjust a rotational radius of the welding torch and a locking member facilitates locking the bearing in a desired adjusted position.
- 17. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 15, wherein the framework is coupled to a mounting rod by a support bracket, and the framework and the support bracket are slidable along the mounting rod to adjust a spacing of the framework relative to the surface to be welded.
- 18. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 15, wherein the thread of the spindle has between 6 and 10 threads per inch, and the framework includes a controller coupled to the drive for controlling at least one of a rotational speed of the spindle and a direction of rotation of the spindle.
- 19. The apparatus for providing a welding bead according to claim 15, wherein the clutch comprises a clutch arm which supports a threaded section located for mating engagement with the thread of the spindle, a first end of the clutch arm is pivotally attached to the framework and a second end of the clutch arm is biased toward engagement with the thread of the spindle.
- 20. A welding apparatus having a clutch to facilitate axial movement of a spindle relative to a framework of the apparatus, the apparatus comprising:the spindle carrying a thread; a drive coupled to the spindle for supplying rotational drive to the spindle and causing rotation of the spindle; a framework supporting a clutch, the drive and at least a portion of the spindle, and the clutch being supported by the framework for engagement with the thread carried by the spindle; and the clutch having an engaged position in which the clutch engages with the thread carried by the spindle to cause axial movement of the spindle, relative to the framework, upon rotation of the spindle by the drive, and a disengaged position in which the clutch is sufficiently spaced from the thread carried by the exterior surface of the spindle so that the spindle can be moved axially relative to the framework.
- 21. An apparatus for providing a welding bead on a surface to be welded, the apparatus comprising:a welding torch; a spindle coupled to the welding torch; a single drive coupled to the spindle for supplying rotational drive to the spindle; and a guide section, when engaged with the spindle, inducing axial movement of the spindle during rotation of the spindle, and the spindle, when disengaged from the guide section, being axially movable independent of the guide section.
- 22. An apparatus for providing a welding bead on a surface to be welded, the apparatus comprising:a spindle supporting a welding torch; a drive coupled to the spindle for suppling rotational movement of the spindle; a framework supporting the drive; and a guide having an engaged position with the spindle to cause axial movement of the spindle upon rotation of the spindle and a disengaged position in which the guide allows independent axial movement of the spindle relative to the framework.
- 23. An apparatus for providing a welding bead on a surface to be welded, the apparatus comprising:a spindle supporting a welding torch; a drive coupled to the spindle for suppling rotational movement of the spindle; a framework supporting the drive; and an axial displacement mechanism having an engaged position in which the axial displacement mechanism induces axial movement of the spindle, relative to the axial displacement mechanism, during operation of the drive and a disengaged position in which the spindle can be moved axially relative to the axial displacement mechanism.
