Claims
- 1. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having support members that are adjustable for supporting workpieces and a conveyor for advancing pallets carrying workpieces, apparatus for automatic adjustment of the position of the workpiece support members of the pallets comprising:
- a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide for controlling the direction of travel of the first and second support members, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions;
- a positioning unit having a means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members and a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions; and
- means for moving the pallet and positioning unit into and out of engagement so that in engagement the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating are engaged and so that out of engagement the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating are disengaged.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the guide and the means for translating the first and second support members further comprises a guide channel slidably receiving the support members for movement therealong and means for locking the first and second support members to respected selected positions along the guide, said locking means having a release mechanism for releasing the locking means so that the first and second members may be moved along the guide, and wherein said means for engaging the means for translating the first and second support members further comprises a first carriage adapted for engaging one of said first or second support members of a pallet and translating parallel to the guide channel of the pallet and release means for actuating the release mechanism of the pallet to release the first and second support members, and wherein the means for driving the means for engaging further comprises a means for driving the first carriage parallel to the guide channel from a first location to a second location within an extreme range of positions.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the support member further comprises a slot adjacent the pallet and the locking means and release mechanism further comprises:
- a wedge, said wedge being adapted for translation;
- a locking element adapted to fit between said wedge and the slot in a support member; and
- a spring adapted to urge said wedge frictionally engaging the support member and pallet,
- and wherein the release means of the positioning unit further comprises a pin oriented vertically and slidable along a second guide parallel to the first guide and adapted to contact the wedge to compress the spring, thereby disengaging the locking element from the slot of the support member.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the locking means further comprises a first locking means associated with the first support member and a second locking means associated with the second support member and wherein the release means further comprises a first pin and a second pin respectively associated with the first and second locking means.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein each support member further comprises a projection and the carriage further comprises a threaded aperture and a first bushing, the first bushing being adapted to engage a projection, and wherein the drive means further comprises a first motor and a first screw passing through and engaging the first threaded aperture of the first carriage, the first screw being and adapted to be controllably rotated by the first motor so that rotation of the first screw will move the first carriage longitudinally along the first screw.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the carriage further comprises a second bushing spaced from the first bushing, the first bushing being adapted to engage a projection from the first support member and the second bushing being adapted to engage a projection from the second support member.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the support members are moved one at a time by the carriage engaging first one and then the other of the first or second support members.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the positioning unit further comprises:
- a second carriage having a second threaded aperture and a second bushing, the second bushing being adapted to engage a projection on a support means; and
- a second drive means having a second motor and a second screw passing through and engaging the threaded aperture of the second carriage, the second screw being adapted to be controllably rotated by the second motor so that rotation of the second screw will move the second carriage longitudinally along the second screw.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the first and second motors are adapted to move the first and second carriages independently.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first and second support members further comprise a threaded surface and wherein the means for translating the first and second support members further comprise a threaded bar extending along and cooperating with said threaded surface and means for rotating the threaded bar relative to the threaded surface to translate the support members along the threaded bar, wherein said means for engaging the means for translating further comprise means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar, and wherein means for driving the engaging means further comprises means for advancing the means for contacting the threaded bar to translate the support members.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the threaded surface of the support members further comprised an interiorly threaded passageway and the threaded bar passes therethrough, wherein the means for rotating the threaded bar further comprises a first toothed gear rigidly attached to the threaded bar, and wherein the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar further comprises a second toothed gear for engaging the first toothed gear, the second toothed gear being connected and controllably rotated by the means for driving the engaging means, and wherein the means for moving the pallet and positioning unit into and out of engagement further comprises moving the first toothed gear into and out of engagement of the second toothed gear whereby the axes of rotation of the first and second toothed gears are not vertically or horizontally aligned.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the pallet further comprises a housing having a first aperture and a second aperture, the housing enclosing the first toothed gear, the threaded bar, and the threaded surface of the support member, the first aperture extending along the guide in the extreme range of positions of the support members so that the support members extend out of the housing through the first aperture and move along the aperture, the second aperture being arranged proximate to the first toothed gear and adapted for passing the second toothed gear therethrough to engage the first toothed gear when the pallet and positioning unit are in engagement.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the threaded bar further comprises a first threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of one of the first or second support members and a second threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of the other support member, wherein the means for rotating the threaded bar further comprises first means for rotating the first threaded bar to translate the one support member and second means for rotating the second threaded bar to translate the other support member, wherein the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar further comprises first means for contacting the first threaded bar and second means for contacting the second threaded bar, and wherein the means for advancing the means for contacting further comprises first means for advancing the first means for contacting the first threaded bar and second means for advancing the second means for contacting the second threaded bar, so that the first and second support members may be independently translated relative to each other along the first and second threaded bars.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the positioning unit further comprises means for determining the location of the first and second support members of the pallet from a predetermined location and means for moving the first and second support members from the determined locations to the desired locations.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the means for determining the location of the first and second support members further comprise:
- first member associated with a first support member of the pallet and a second member associated with a second support member of the pallet, the first and second members having an outermost position and an innermost position, the outermost position corresponding to the extreme range of motion of the first and second members and the innermost position being inside the outermost position;
- means for moving the first member from its outermost position inwardly until it contacts the first support member and for moving the second member until it contacts the second support member; and
- means for measuring the respective distances between the outermost predetermined locations of the first and second members and the locations where the members contact the support members.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the means for moving the first and second members further comprises means for comparing the determined locations of the first and second support members to the desired locations of the first and second support members for the workpiece to be loaded, and means for independently moving the support members from their determined locations to the desired locations.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for driving is adapted for providing an infinite number of intermediate positions between the extreme range of positions.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said positioning unit is positioned along the production line as the pallets advance.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for driving is computer controlled.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the support members are adapted to provide accessibility to the workpieces from above and below so that the workpieces can be lifted from the support members for unloading or transfer to a workstation.
- 21. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having different dimensions including a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide for controlling the direction of travel of the first and second support members, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions, a positioning unit having a means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members and a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions; and a means for moving the pallet and positioning unit relative to each other, a method for adjusting the distance between a first and a second support member of a pallet comprising the steps of:
- (a) moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning means so that the means for translating the support members and the means for engaging the means for translating the support members are aligned;
- (b) moving the pallet and positioning means relative to each other so that the means for translating the support members and the means for engaging the means for translating are engaged;
- (c) actuating the means for driving the means for engaging in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving the first and second support members relative to each other in a direction controlled by the guide to a desired location; and
- (d) moving the pallet and positioning means apart so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the pallet further includes a means for locking the first and second support members to respective selected positions along the guide, the locking means having a release mechanism so that the first and second members may be moved along the first guide, and wherein the positioning unit further includes a release means for actuating the release mechanism for releasing the first and second support members and having a first carriage adapted for engaging one of the first or second support members of a pallet, and drive means for translating the first carriage parallel to the guide of the pallet, the method further comprising:
- moving the carriage to a first position associated with the position of one of the first or second support members;
- step (b) further comprising moving the pallet and positioning unit together so that the release means contacts the release mechanism, thereby releasing the locking means;
- step (c) further comprising actuating the drive means in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving the carriage and the one of the first or second support members to a second position; and
- step (d) further comprising disengaging the release means from the release mechanism thereby locking the first and second support members in place.
- 23. The method of claim 22 further comprising the steps of:
- moving the first carriage to a third position associated with the location of the other of the first or second support members,
- moving the pallet and positioning unit together so that the release means contacts the release mechanism, thereby releasing the locking means, and so that the carriage engages the other of the first or second support members;
- actuating the drive means in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving the carriage and the other of the first or second support members to the desired fourth position; and
- moving the pallet and positioning unit apart so that the release means disengages from the release mechanism, thereby locking the first and second support members in place.
- 24. The method of claim 21 wherein the first and second support members have a threaded surface, the means for translating the first and second support members includes a threaded bar extending along and cooperating with said threaded surfaces and a means for rotating the threaded bar relative to the threaded surfaces to translate the support members along the bar, wherein the means for engaging the means for translating includes a means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar, and wherein means for driving the engaging means includes a means for advancing the means for contacting the threaded bar to translate the support members relative to one another, the method comprising the steps of:
- step (a) further comprising moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning unit so that the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar on the positioning unit is aligned with the means for rotating the threaded bar on the pallet;
- step (b) further comprising engaging the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar on the positioning unit with the means for rotating the threaded bar on the pallet;
- step (c) further comprising rotating the threaded bar in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving the first and second support members relative to each other to a desired location; and
- step (d) further comprising di engaging the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar on the positioning unit with the means for rotating the threaded bar on the pallet so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein the threaded bar includes a first threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of one of the first or second support members and a second threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of the other support member, wherein the means for rotating the threaded bar includes a first means for rotating the first threaded bar to translate the one support member and second means for rotating the second threaded bar to translate the other support member, wherein the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar includes a first means for contacting the first threaded bar and second means for contacting the second threaded bar, and wherein the means for advancing the means for contacting includes a first means for advancing the first means for contacting the first threaded bar and second means for advancing the second means for contacting the second threaded bar, so that the first and second support members may be independently translated relative to each other along the first and second bars, the method comprising the steps of:
- step (a) further comprising moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning unit so that the first and second means for contacting and rotating the first and second threaded bars on the positioning unit are aligned with the first and second means for rotating the first and second threaded bars on the pallet;
- step (b) further comprising engaging the first and second means for contacting and rotating the first and second threaded bars on the positioning unit with the first and second means for rotating the first and second threaded bars on the pallet;
- step (c) further comprising rotating the first and second threaded bars in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving independently the first and second support members relative to each other to desired locations corresponding to the workpiece dimensions; and
- step (d) further comprising disengaging the first and second means for contacting and rotating the first and second threaded bars on the positioning unit with the first and second means for rotating the first and second threaded bars on the pallet so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
- 26. The method of claim 21 further comprising the step of determining the position of the first and second support members relative to a first and second predetermined locations, wherein step (c) further comprises driving the means for engaging in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece and the determined distance of the first and second support members, thereby moving the first and second support members relative to each other from the determined locations to a desired location.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the positioning unit includes a first member associated with a first support member of the pallet and a second member associated with a second support member of the pallet, the first and second members having an outermost position and an innermost position, the outermost position corresponding to the extreme range of motion of the first and second members and the innermost position being inside the outermost position, and a means for moving the first member and the second member, the method further comprising:
- placing the first and second members at their respective outermost positions prior to step (a);
- moving the first member inwardly from its outermost position until it contacts the first support member, thereby defining a first distance measured between the predetermined position and the location of the first support member; and
- moving the second member inwardly from its outermost position until it contacts the second support member, thereby defining a second distance measured between the predetermined position and the location of the first support member, whereby the first and second determined distances define the location of the first and second support members prior to adjustment.
- 28. The method of claim 27 wherein placing the first and second members at their respective outermost positions occurs after step (b) and before step (c).
- 29. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having support members that are adjustable for supporting workpieces and a conveyor for advancing pallets carrying workpieces, apparatus for automatic adjustment of the position of the workpiece support members of the pallets comprising:
- a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide, a threaded bar, and means for rotating the threaded bar, the first and second support members being movable towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions and each having a threaded surface for cooperative contact with and movement along the threaded bar;
- positioning unit having an engaging means for contacting and advancing the means for rotating the threaded bar whereby the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions; and
- means for moving the pallet and positioning unit into and out of engagement so that in engagement the means for rotating the threaded bar of the pallet and the engaging means of the positioning unit are engaged and so that out of engagement said rotating and engaging means are disengaged.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the threaded surface of the support members further comprises an interiorly threaded passageway and the threaded bar passes therethrough, wherein the means for rotating the threaded bar further comprises a first toothed gear rigidly attached to the threaded bar, and wherein the engaging means further comprises a second toothed gear for engaging and advancing the first toothed gear, and wherein the means for moving the pallet and positioning unit into and out of engagement further comprises moving the first toothed gear into and out of engagement of the second toothed gear.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 30 wherein the pallet further comprises a housing having a first aperture and a second aperture, the housing enclosing the first toothed gear, the threaded bar, and the threaded surface of the support member, the first aperture extending along the guide in the extreme range of positions of the support members so that the support members extend out of the housing through the first aperture and move along the aperture, the second aperture being arranged proximate to the first toothed gear and adapted for passing the second toothed gear therethrough to engage the first toothed gear when the pallet and positioning unit are in engagement.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the threaded bar further comprises a first threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of one of the first or second support members and a second threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surfaced of the other support member, wherein the means for rotating the threaded bar further comprises first means for rotating the first threaded bar to translate the one support member and second means for rotating the second threaded bar to translate the other support member, wherein the engaging means further comprises first means for contacting the first means for rotating the first threaded bar and for rotating the first threaded bar and second means for contacting the second means for rotating the second threaded bar and for rotating the second threaded bar, so that the first and second support members may be independently translated relative to each other along the guide.
- 33. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having support members that are adjustable for supporting workpieces and a conveyor for advancing pallets carrying workpieces, apparatus for automatic adjustment of the position of the work piece support members of the pallets comprising:
- a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions;
- a positioning unit having
- means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members, a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions,
- a first member associated with the first support member of the pallet and a second member associated with the second support member of the pallet, the first and second members each having a predetermined outermost position and a predetermined innermost position, the outermost positions corresponding to the extreme range of motion of the first and second members and the innermost positions being inside the outermost positions,
- means for moving the first member from one of its outermost or innermost position toward the other position until it contacts the first support member and means for moving the second member from one of its outermost or innermost position toward the other position until it contacts the second support member,
- means for measuring the respective distances between the one of the outermost or innermost predetermined locations of the first and second members and the locations where the members contact the support members, and
- means for moving the first and second support members from the determined locations to the desired locations; and
- means for moving the pallet and positioning unit into and out of engagement so that in engagement the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating are engaged and so that out of engagement the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating are disengaged.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 33 wherein the means for moving the first and second members further comprises means for comparing the determined locations of the first and second support members to the desired locations of the first and second support members for the workpiece to be loaded, and means for independently moving the support members from their determined locations to the desired locations.
- 35. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having different dimensions including a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions, wherein the first and second support members have a threaded surface, the means for translating the first and second support members includes a threaded bar extending along and cooperating with said threaded surfaces and a means for rotating the threaded bar relative to the threaded surfaces to translate the support members along the bar, a positioning unit having a means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members and a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions wherein the means for engaging the means for translating includes a means for driving the engaging means includes a means for advancing the means for contacting the threaded bar to translate the support members relative to one another, and a means for moving the pallet and positioning unit relative to each other, a method for adjusting the distance between a first and a second support member of a pallet comprising the steps of:
- (a) moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning means so that the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar on the positioning unit is aligned with the means for rotating the threaded bar on the pallet;
- (b) engaging the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar on the positioning unit with the same for rotating the threaded bar on the pallet;
- (c) rotating the threaded bar in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving the first and second support members relative to each other to a desired location; and
- (d) disengaging the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar on the positioning unit with the means for rotating the threaded bar on the pallet so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
- 36. The method of claim 35 wherein the threaded bar includes a first threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of one of the first or second support members and a second threaded bar extending along and cooperating with the threaded surface of the other support member, wherein the means for rotating the threaded bar includes a first means for rotating the first threaded bar to translate the one support member and second means for rotating the second threaded bar to translate the other support member, wherein the means for contacting and rotating the threaded bar includes a first means for contacting the first threaded bar and second means for contacting the second threaded bar, and wherein the means for advancing the means for contacting includes a first means for advancing the first means for contacting the first threaded bar and second means for advancing the second means for contacting the second threaded bar, so that the first and second support members may be independently translated relative to each other along the first and second bars, the method further comprising the steps of:
- step (a) further comprising moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning unit so that the first and second means for contacting and rotating the first and second threaded bars on the positioning unit are aligned with the first and second means for rotating the first and second threaded bars on the pallet;
- step (b) further comprising engaging the first and second means for contacting and rotating the first and second threaded bars on the positioning unit with the first and second means for rotating the first and second threaded bars on the pallet;
- step (c) further comprising rotating the first and second threaded bars in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece, thereby moving independently the first and second support members relative to each other to desired locations corresponding to the workpiece dimensions; and
- step (d) further comprising disengaging the first and second means for contacting the first and second threaded bars with the first and second means for rotating the first and second threaded bars so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
- 37. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having different selected dimensions including a pallet having a first support member, a second support member, a guide, and means for translating the first and second support members towards and away from each other along the guide within an extreme range of positions, a positioning unit having a means for engaging said means for translating the first and second support members and a means for driving the means for engaging so that the first and second support members can be translated relative to each other along the guide from a first relative position to a second relative position within the extreme range of positions, a first member associated with a first support member of the pallet and a second member associated with a second support member of the pallet, the first and second members each having an outermost position and an innermost position, the outermost positions corresponding to the extreme range of motion of the first and second members and the innermost positions being inside the outermost position, and a means for moving the first member and the second member; and a means for moving the pallet and positioning unit relative to each other, a method for adjusting the distance between a first and a second support member of a pallet comprising the steps of:
- placing the first and second members at their respective outermost positions;
- moving the pallet into alignment with the positioning means so that the means for translating the support members and the means for engaging the means for translating the support members are aligned;
- determining the position of the first and second support members relative to a first and second predetermined locations;
- engaging the means for translating the support members and the means for engaging the means for translating;
- moving the first member from one of its outermost or innermost positions until it contacts the first support member, thereby defining a first distance measured between the predetermined outermost or innermost position and the location of the first support member;
- moving the second member from one of its outermost or innermost positions until it contacts the second support member, thereby defining a second distance measured between the predetermined outermost or innermost position and the location of the second support member, whereby the first and second determined distances define the location of the first and second support members prior to adjustment;
- actuating the means for driving the means for engaging in response to the selected dimensions of a workpiece and the determined distances so that the first and second support members are moved relative to each other to desired locations to support the workpiece; and
- moving the pallet and positioning means apart so that the first and second support members are maintained in place on the pallet in the desired locations.
- 38. The method of claim 37 wherein placing the first and second members at one of their respective outermost or innermost positions and determining the position of the first and second support members occurs after engaging the means for translating and the means for engaging the means for translating and before actuating the means for driving the means for engaging.
- 39. In a pallet conveyor production line for workpieces having different dimensions including a pallet having support members that are adjustable for supporting the workpieces and a conveyor for advancing pallets carrying workpieces, wherein each pallet has a first support member and a second support member, a first guide for controlling the direction of travel of the first and second support members, the first and second support members adapted for translation towards and away from each other along the first guide, and means for locking the first and second support members to respective selected positions along the first guide, said locking means having a release mechanism so that the first and second members may be moved along the first guide, and including a positioning unit disposed adjacent the conveyor, said positioning unit having a release means for actuating the release mechanism of a pallet for releasing the first and second support members, a first carriage and a second carriage adapted respectively for engaging the first and second support members of a pallet, and first and second drive means for respectively translating the first and second carriages parallel to the first guide of a pallet within an extreme range of positions, and means for moving a pallet and positioning unit relative to each other, a method for adjusting the distance between a first and a second support member of a pallet comprising:
- moving a pallet under the positioning unit;
- moving the first and second carriages to respective first and second positions associated with the positions of the first and second support members on the pallet;
- moving the pallet and positioning unit together so that the release means contacts the release mechanism, thereby releasing the locking means, and so that the first and second carriages respectively engage the first and second support members;
- actuating the first and second drive means in response to the dimensions of the selected workpiece thereby moving the first and second carriages and the first and second support members in a direction controlled by the first guide to a respective third and fourth positions for the selected workpiece dimensions; and
- moving the pallet and positioning unit apart so that the release means disengages from the release mechanism, thereby locking the first and second support members in place.
