Claims
- 1. An electrically operated diaphragm valve, comprising:
- a stepper motor;
- controller means electrically connected to said motor;
- a valve actuator to be moved by said motor;
- a diaphragm disposed at one end of said actuator and in communication with a conductive chamber of said valve;
- an outer casing adapted to house said actuator;
- reference position indicator means for generating a calibration signal indicative of when said actuator is in reference position and for applying said calibration signal to said controller; and
- said controller means for calibrating said valve actuator based on said reference position indicator means so as to eliminate error in the calibration process caused by fall back.
- 2. The valve of claim 1, further comprising means on said outer casing for visually monitoring a movement of said actuator.
- 3. The valve of claim 1, wherein said reference position indicator means comprises:
- a magnetic reed switch mounted to said actuator; and
- a magnet mounted to said outer casting.
- 4. The valve of claim 2, wherein said magnetic reed switch and said magnet are separated by a distance between approximately 0.2775 to 0.2825 inches.
- 5. An apparatus for automatically calibrating an electrically-controlled diaphragm valve having an electrically driven actuator and reference position indicator within said valve for indicating a position of said actuator within said valve, comprising:
- (a) means for driving said actuator to the reference position indicator;
- (b) means for driving said actuator a first number of steps;
- (c) means for returning said actuator to the reference position indicator;
- (d) means for determining whether fall back occurred in step (b), and determining a second number of steps based upon whether fall back occurred; and
- (e) means for driving said actuator the second number of steps in order to eliminate error caused by said fall back.
- 6. An apparatus for automatically calibrating an electrically-controlled diaphragm valve actuator having an actuator electrically driven by a stepper motor and a reference position indicator for indicating a reference position of said actuator, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) means for placing said actuator at the reference position indicated by said reference position indicator;
- (b) means for driving said actuator a first number of steps;
- (c) means for returning said actuator to the reference position indicated by said reference position indicator;
- (d) means for determining if fall back occurred by determining whether said first number of steps exceeded the number of steps necessary to close said valve;
- (e) means for determining a second number of steps greater than said first number of steps if fall back did not occur; and
- (f) means for determining a second number of steps, which is less than said first number of steps, if fall back did occur.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said means for determining whether fall back occurred includes means for determining if the number of steps taken to return said actuator to said reference position indicator is within a predetermined tolerance of said fast number of steps.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said second number of steps determined in paragraph (d) is greater than said first number of steps if fall back did not occur.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said second number of steps determined in paragraph (d) is less than said first number of steps if fall back occurred.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said means for determining whether fall back occurred includes means for determining if the number of steps taken to return said actuator to said reference position indicator is within a predetermined tolerance of said first number of steps.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said means for determining said second number of steps in paragraph (e) includes means for determining said second number of steps by increasing said first number of steps by a factor of one-half of a difference between said first number of steps of a last iteration in which fall back occurred and said first number of steps.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said means for determining said second number of steps in paragraph (f) includes means for determining said second number of steps by increasing said first number of steps of a last iteration in which fall back did not occur by a factor of one-half of a difference between said first number of steps and said first number of steps of said last iteration in which fall back did not occur.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 6, further including means for determining a closed position of said actuator comprising means for determining if a difference between said first number of steps determined not to produce fall back is within a predetermined tolerance of a previous said first number of steps determined not to produce fall back.
