- positioning means for positioning said exercise member under substantially no resistance to an angle in its pivot conductive to the physique of such user and such exercise to be performed at the start of such exercise wherein said positioning means provides force to said exercise member to overcome the weight and friction of said exercise member while it is being positioned; and
- exercise motion transmission means for transmitting the pivoting motion of said exercise member to linear motion.
- 2. The machine of claim 1 wherein:
- said adjusting means includes said exercise member having an inner portion and an outer portion, said two portions having different sizes so that one portion may telescope inside the other portion thereby adjusting the total length of said exercise member;
- said locking means including:
- a tapped hole on the side of one of said portions; and
- a threaded clamp mounted within said tapped hole in order to rotate said clamp and thereby move said clamp into firm engagement with both portions thereby firmly locking one portion to the other.
- 3. The machine of claim 2 wherein said resistance means includes:
- a hydraulic assembly including a cylinder, piston and rod with said piston connected to said rod and said piston and rod being moveable within said cylinder, said hydraulic assembly having a base end and an exercise member end and being connected at said base end to said base; and
- a first sprocket having an exercise member end and a hydraulics end which is pivotally connected at said exercise member end to said exercise member so that when said exercise member rotates, said first sprocket rotates and said first sprocket also being pivotally connected to said hydraulics at its hydraulics end so that as said sprocket rotates, said piston is moved linearly with respect to said cylinder.
- 4. A system for positioning an exercise machine, comprising:
- two arms, said arms each connected at one end to one end of an exercise member, said exercise member pivotally connected at another end to a base; and
- two handles, each of said handles pivotally connected at one end to another end of each of two said arms such that said handles, arms and exercise member may be pivoted relative to each other to a particular width and height of a point of contact with a user, said arms and handles being pivotally connected along an axis substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of said exercise member in such a manner so as to allow the handles to be pivoted independently of the arms;
- wherein said handles and arms remain substantially stationary with respect to said exercise member while said exercise member with a set position of arms and handles is pivoted with respect to said base during exercise.
- 5. A system for positioning an exercise machine, comprising:
- a first and second arm, each pivotally connected at a first end to an exercise member;
- rotational transmission means to transmit the rotation of one arm to the other, and in the opposite direction, so that both arms move through the same arc and in the opposite direction;
- a first and second handle, each pivotally connected to a second end of said first and second arms, said handles capable of being rotated independent of said arms; and
- a first securing means to secure said arms stationary with respect to one another and a second securing means to secure said hands with respect to said arms while said exercise member is pivoted.
- 6. A machine for performing exercises by a user, comprising:
- a base which remains substantially stationary;
- an exercise member connected to said base and being sized to be forced to move with respect to said base;
- resistance means for resisting said force to move said exercise member with respect to said base;
- said base including:
- an upright structure from which said exercise member projects;
- a platform which is substantially flat and is connected to said upright structure and resides below said upright structure; and
- a bench connected to and above said platform and sized and positioned with respect to said exercise member and upright structure to support a user on said bench and interact with said exercise member, said bench further including a seat portion and a back portion, said seat portion having a first side and a second side and said back portion having a first side, second side and underside, said first side of said seat portion being pivotally connected to said first side of said back portion;
- adjustment means for adjusting the angle between said back portion and said seat portion and releasably positioning said back portion at various angles while said seat portion remains substantially stationary with respect to said base;
- said adjustment means comprising:
- a stand having a back end and a notch end, pivotally connected at said back end to said underside of said back portion; and
- a plurality of notches disposed at various heights upon said upright structure such that as said back portion is pivoted with respect to said seat portion to the desired angle to substantially accommodate the physique of such user and such exercise to be performed, said stand may be pivoted with respect to said back portion and said notch end of said stand may be releasably secured in said notch in said upright structure appropriate to the desired angle;
- said stand further comprising:
- two pegs each disposed on opposite sides of said notch end of said stand which slides into said notches;
- said notches each comprising:
- a first slanting slot which extends from an outer surface of said upright structure at an angle down and into said upright structure; and
- a vertical wall at the end of said first slanting slot and inside said upright structure.
- 7. An exercise machine, comprising:
- a base;
- an exercise lever including a head, an arm, a handle, a first locking means for releasably locking said arm relative to said head, and a second securing means for releasably locking said handle relative to said arm, wherein said exercise lever pivots relative to said base when said arm is locked relative to said head;
