Claims
- 1. An impact tool comprising:
- a body having a first end and a second end and a channel extending therethrough, the channel having a first region extending from the first end to a point intermediate the first and second ends and a second region extending from the second end to the intermediate point, and a transition region extending about the intermediate point;
- calibrating means for calibrating impact force delivered by an implement coupled to the tool;
- coupling means for coupling the implement to the body, the coupling means including a rod extending into the channel, the rod having a shoulder extending about the periphery thereof proximal to an end of the rod;
- impact inducing means for causing the implement to deliver an impact to a desired object with an impact force calibrated by the calibration means, the inducing means comprising a piston slidably retained in the channel, the piston including a first end coupled to the calibration means, a second end configured to receive the rod, and an actuation mechanism configured to releasably engage the end of the rod; and
- return means for causing the rod to be engaged by the actuation mechanism after the implement impacts the object, the return means retaining the rod proximal to the second end of the body to withdraw the rod out of the second end of the piston until the rod is engaged by the actuation mechanism,
- wherein as pressure is applied to the implement by the tool, the impact inducing means is urged toward the first end of the body until the actuation mechanism disengages the rod for causing the impact inducing means to propel the rod along the channel until the implement impacts the object.
- 2. The tool of claim 1 further comprising:
- the second end of the piston having an elongated cavity disposed therethrough for receiving the rod and a hole formed through a wall thereof, the hole extending through the wall of the piston, perpendicular to the elongated cavity, and into an inner surface thereof, such that a depression is formed in the inner surface of the piston aligned with the hole;
- the rod having a boss formed on the end thereof; and
- the actuation mechanism comprising a spring secured in the depression and a trigger member slidably retained in the hole and coupled to the spring, the trigger member having a bottom surface and an opening disposed therethrough perpendicular to the bottom surface to form a bottom edge, the opening dimensioned to allow the rod to extend through the trigger and into the cavity, the spring provided to bias the trigger member outwardly, such that a head of the trigger normally projects outwardly from the periphery of the piston,
- wherein as pressure is applied to the implement by the tool, the piston is urged toward the first end of the body until the head of the trigger contacts the transition region of the channel for compressing the spring to disengage the boss from the bottom edge of the trigger enabling the rod to pass into the elongated cavity causing the calibration means to propel the piston along the rod until the piston strikes the shoulder thereof to propel the piston and rod along the second region of the channel until the implement impacts the object, and wherein after the implement impacts the object, the piston is drawn toward the first end of the body by the calibration means with the return means retaining the rod proximal to the second end of the body for withdrawing the rod out of the cavity, the rod drawn out of the cavity until the boss passes into the opening in the trigger, with the spring biasing the trigger outwardly, such that the bottom edge of the trigger is pressed against the boss to engage the rod.
- 3. The tool of claim 2 wherein the first region of the channel has a first diameter and the second region has a diameter greater than the first diameter, so that the transition region comprises a tapered ramp extending about the midpoint for contacting the head of the trigger for actuating the actuation mechanism.
- 4. The tool of claim 1 wherein the coupling means comprises a chuck having the rod integrally formed at one end for coupling the chuck to the body and a jaw assembly diametrically opposed to the rod, the jaw assembly including quick-release means for quickly attaching and detaching different desired surgical implements thereto.
- 5. The tool of claim 2 wherein the return means further comprises a return spring and an adjustable member secured in the second region of the channel, the return spring interposed between the adjustable member and the second end of the body and extending about the periphery of the rod and coupled thereto, the return spring biasing the rod toward the second end of the body to cause the boss to be engaged by the trigger for coupling the rod to the piston.
- 6. An impact tool for use in surgical and industrial functions, the tool comprising:
- a body having a first end and a second end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, the body having channel extending therethrough and parallel to the longitudinal axis, the channel having a first region extending from the first end to a midpoint intermediate the first and second ends of the body and a second region extending from the second end to the midpoint, and a transition region extending about the midpoint;
- calibrating means for calibrating an impact force to be delivered by an implement coupled to the tool;
- quick-disconnect means for quickly releasably connecting and disconnecting the implement to the body, the coupling means including a rod extending into the channel, the rod having a shoulder extending about the periphery thereof proximal to an end of the rod;
- antirotation means for preventing the implement from rotating relative to the longitudinal axis of the body;
- impact inducing means for causing the implement to deliver an impact to a desired object with an impact force calibrated by the calibration means, the inducing means comprising a piston slidably retained in the channel, the piston including a first end coupled to the calibration means, a second end configured to receive the rod, and an actuation mechanism configured to releasably engage the end of the rod; and
- return means for causing the rod to be engaged by the actuation mechanism, the return means retaining the rod proximal to the second end of the body to withdraw the rod out of the second end of the piston until the rod is engaged by the actuation mechanism,
- wherein as pressure is applied to the implement by the tool, the rod urges the impact inducing means into the first region of the channel until the actuation mechanism contacts the transition region causing the actuation mechanism to disengage the rod to enable the impact inducing means to propel the piston along the rod until the piston strikes the shoulder thereof for simultaneously propelling the piston and rod instantaneously along the second region of the channel until the implement impacts a desired object with an impact force calibrated by adjustment means, while the antirotation means prevents the rod from rotating about the longitudinal axis of the body as the trod travels along the second region of the channel, and wherein after the implement impacts the object, the calibration means draws the piston toward the first end of the body with the return means retaining the rod proximal to the second end of the body for withdrawing the rod out of the piston until the end of the rod is engaged by the actuation mechanism for coupling the impact inducing means to the implement for subsequent impacts by the implement to the object.
- 7. The tool of claim 6 further comprising:
- the second end of the piston having an elongated cavity disposed therethrough for receiving the rod and a hole formed through a wall thereof, the hole extending through the wall of the piston, perpendicular to the elongated cavity, and into an inner surface thereof, such that a depression is formed in the inner surface of the piston aligned with the hole;
- the rod having a boss formed on the end thereof; and
- the actuation mechanism comprising a spring secured in the depression and a trigger member slidably retained in the hole and coupled to the spring, the trigger member having a bottom surface and an opening disposed therethrough perpendicular to the bottom surface to form a bottom edge, the opening dimensioned to allow the rod to extend through the trigger and into the cavity, the spring provided to bias the trigger member outwardly, such that a head of the trigger normally projects outwardly from the periphery of the piston for contacting the transition region of the channel.
- 8. The tool of claim 7 wherein the rod further comprises:
- an end section extending from the end thereof to a mid section of the rod, the end section configured to extend into the elongated cavity of the piston, the mid section having a diameter greater than the diameter of the end section for forming the shoulder.
- 9. The tool of claim 8 wherein the antirotation means further comprises:
- an adjustable member secured in the second region of the channel, the adjustable member having a substantially oblong aperture disposed therethrough, the end and mid sections of the rod having a cross-sectional configuration complementary to the aperture in the adjustable member to allow the end and mid sections of the rod to pass therethrough while preventing the rod from rotating relative to the longitudinal axis of the body.
- 10. The tool of claim 9 wherein the return means comprises a return spring interposed between the adjustable member and the second end of the body and extending about the periphery of the rod and coupled thereto distal to the end section, the return spring biasing the rod toward the second end of the body to cause the boss to be engaged by the trigger for coupling the rod to the piston.
- 11. The tool of claim 6 wherein the quick-disconnect means comprises a chuck assembly having the rod integrally formed at one end for coupling the chuck to the body and a quick-disconnect jaw assembly diametrically opposed to the rod, the jaw assembly including quick-release means for quickly attaching and detaching different desired implements to the chuck.
- 12. An impact tool for use in surgical and industrial functions, the tool comprising:
- a hollow body having a first end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis, the body including a channel extending therethrough, the channel having a first region of a first diameter extending from the first end to a midpoint that is intermediate the first and second ends and a second region having a diameter greater than the first region extending from the second end to the midpoint, and a conical ramp formed about the midpoint for providing a transition region between the first and second regions;
- calibration means for calibrating impact force delivered by the tool, the calibration means comprising a knob threadably coupled to the first end of the body;
- quick-disconnect means for quickly attaching and detaching different desired implements to the tool, the quick-disconnect means comprising a chuck assembly having the rod integrally formed at one end for coupling the chuck to the body and a quick-disconnect jaw assembly diametrically opposed to the rod, the rod extending into the channel and having an end section extending from an end thereof to a mid section of the rod, the end section having a diameter less than the diameter of the mid section to form a shoulder about the convergence of the end and mid sections, the end and mid sections having a substantially oblong cross-sectional configuration, the rod further including a boss formed on the end thereof;
- impact inducing means for causing the medical implement to deliver an impact force to a desired object with an impact force calibrated by the calibration means, the impact inducing means comprising,
- a piston slidably retained in the channel, the piston including a first end, a second end having an elongated cavity disposed therethrough configured to receive the end section of the rod, and a hole formed through a wall thereof, the hole extending perpendicular to the elongated cavity and into an inner surface thereof, such that a depression is formed in the inner surface of the piston aligned with the hole,
- a main spring retained in the first region of the channel and coupled to the first end of the piston and to the calibration means, the calibration means rotated to control the compression of the spring by the piston for calibrating the impact force delivered by an implement coupled to the tool;
- an actuation mechanism configured to releasably engage the end section of the rod, the actuation mechanism comprising an actuation spring secured in the depression and a trigger member slidably retained in the hole and coupled to the actuation spring, the trigger member having a bottom surface and an opening disposed therethrough perpendicular to the bottom surface to form a bottom edge, the opening dimensioned to allow the end section of the rod to extend through the trigger and into the cavity, the actuation spring provided to bias the trigger member outwardly, such that a head of the trigger normally projects outwardly from the periphery of the piston to contact the transition region of the channel;
- antirotation means for preventing the implement from rotating relative to the longitudinal axis of the body, the antirotation means comprising an adjustable member secured in the second region of the channel, the adjustable member having an aperture disposed therethrough configured complementary to the end and mid sections of the rod to allow the end and mid sections to pass therethrough while preventing the rod from rotating relative to the longitudinal axis of the body as the rod travels along the channel; and
- return means for causing the rod to be engaged by the actuation mechanism, the return means comprising a return spring interposed between the adjustable member and the second end of the body and extending about the periphery of the rod and coupled thereto distal to the end section, the return spring biasing the rod toward the second end of the body to cause the boss to be engaged by the trigger for coupling the rod to the piston,
- wherein in an initial position, the main spring exert force on the piston to retain the actuation mechanism in the second region of the channel to prevent the impact inducing means from causing the implement to deliver an impact, and wherein as pressure is applied to the implement by the tool, the piston is urged toward the first end of the body for compressing the main spring, the piston being urged toward the first end until the end of the trigger contacts the transition region of the channel for compressing the actuation spring to disengage the boss from the bottom edge of the trigger for causing the inducing means to deliver an impact, the implement delivering an impact by the rod to passing into the elongated cavity causing the calibration means to propel the piston along the rod until the piston strikes the shoulder thereof to simultaneously propel the piston and rod instantaneously along the second region of the channel until the implement impacts the object, while the antirotation means prevents the rod from rotating about the longitudinal axis as the rod travels along the second region of the channel, and wherein after the implement impacts the object, the piston is drawn toward the first end of the body by the calibration means with the return means retaining the rod proximal to the second end for withdrawing the rod out of the cavity, the rod drawn out of the cavity until the boss passes into the opening in the trigger, with the actuation spring biasing the trigger outwardly, such that the bottom edge of the trigger is pressed against the boss to engage the rod to return the impact inducing means to the initial position for enabling the implement to deliver subsequent impacts.
- 13. The tool of claim 12 wherein the antirotation means further comprises:
- each of the end section and mid section of the rod being substantially cylindrical with chordal sides and the aperture disposed through the adjustable member being annular with chordal sides for allowing the end and mid sections of the rod to pass through the aperture and for providing a slip-fit of the rod between the mid section of the rod and the adjustable member while preventing the rod from rotating relative to the longitudinal axis of the body as the rod travels along the channel.
- 14. The tool of claim 12 wherein the implement is selected from the group of surgical implements consisting of an acetabular adjuster, a surgical pin inserter, a surgical staple, a surgical bone chisel, an osteotome, a gouge, and a bone tamp.
- 15. The tool of claim 14 wherein the tool comprises a biocompatible material.
- 16. The tool of claim 15 wherein the biocompatible material is selected from the group consisting of a stainless steel alloy, titanium alloy, and cobalt alloys.
- 17. The tool of claim 12 wherein the calibration means is provided with a multiplicity of spatially positioned elongated furrows in the periphery of the knob to enhance gripping thereof.
- 18. The tool of claim 12 wherein the periphery of the body is provided with an ovular depression proximal to the second end thereof to inhibit the tool from inadvertently moving in a user's hand that is grasping the tool upon the implement impacting the desired object, the antirotation assembly and depression coacting to enable a user to determine and maintain a desired orientation of various implements coupled to the quick disconnect assembly, when the implement is obscured from the user's view.
- 19. An impact tool for use in surgical and industrial functions for applying an instantaneous extraction force to a desired object, the tool comprising:
- a body having a first end and a second end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, the body having channel extending therethrough and parallel to the longitudinal axis, the channel having a first region extending from the first end to a midpoint intermediate the first and second ends of the body and a second region extending from the second end to the midpoint, and a transition region extending about the midpoint;
- calibrating means for calibrating an extraction force to be delivered by an implement coupled to the tool;
- quick-disconnect means for quickly releasably connecting and disconnecting the implement to the body, the coupling means including a rod extending into the channel;
- instantaneous extraction force inducing means for causing the implement to apply an instantaneous extraction force to a desired object with an extraction force calibrated by the calibration means, the inducing means coupled to the rod for drawing the rod into the channel, the inducing means further including an actuation mechanism; and
- return means for causing the rod to be engaged by the actuation mechanism, the return means retaining the rod proximal to the second end of the body to withdraw the rod out of the second end of the piston until the rod is engaged by the actuation mechanism,
- wherein the implement is coupled to a selected object for extracting the object from a surface in which at least a portion of the object is imbedded, the tool then being withdrawn from the object until the actuation mechanism is actuated for causing the inducing means to apply an instantaneous extraction force to the object for at least partially withdrawing a portion of the object from the surface in which the object is imbedded, the tool being repeatedly withdrawn from the object until the object is entirely removed from the surface, the tool affording the
