Claims
- 1. A device for automatically removing lids from, and placing lids onto, different sized trays, comprising:
means for conveying trays; a first sensor means to detect the size of a tray; a second sensor means to detect the presence of a lid; and a lid manipulator capable of grasping a lid from a tray conveyed to said lid manipulator and also capable of selecting among different sized trays, and wherein said lid manipulator removes a lid from a tray when said second sensor means detects the presence of a lid on a tray conveyed by said second sensor means, and wherein said lid manipulator selects a lid and places a lid onto a tray when said first sensor means detects the size of a tray conveyed by said first sensor means.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said lid manipulator further comprises a plurality of lid holders capable of grasping a lid.
- 3. The device of claim 2 wherein said lid holders comprise vacuum cups.
- 4. The device of claim 1 further comprising at least one end mechanism connected to an end of said lid manipulator, wherein said at least one end mechanism folds lid flaps of a lid held by said lid holders, and said lid manipulator guides the lid onto a positioned tray.
- 5. The device of claim 1 further comprising a strap cutter wherein said strap cutter cuts straps that hold a lid onto a tray.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said strap cutter comprises a spatula and cutting edge.
- 7. The device of claim 6 wherein said cutting edge further comprises a curved blade.
- 8. The device of claim 6 wherein said cutting edge further comprises a straight blade.
- 9. The device of claim 1 wherein said means for conveying comprises a powered roller conveyor.
- 10. The device of claim 1 wherein said means for conveying comprises a conveyor belt.
- 11. The device of claim 1 wherein said means for conveying further comprises a tray stop.
- 12. An automatic lidder comprising:
means for sensing the size of a tray; means for sensing the presence of a lid on a tray; means for cutting a strap that binds a tray to a lid; means for removing a lid from a tray; and means for placing a lid on a tray.
- 13. The lidder of claim 12 further comprising means for biasing together a tray and said means for cutting.
- 14. The lidder of claim 12 wherein said means for placing further comprises means for selecting a lid sized to match a tray.
- 15. The lidder of claim 12 further comprising means for moving a tray to said means for sensing the size of a tray; to said means for sensing the presence of a lid on a tray; to said means for cutting a strap that binds a tray to a lid; to said means for removing a lid from a tray; and to said means for placing a lid on a tray.
- 16. A method of automatically putting lids on different size trays, the method comprises the steps of:
moving trays to work points; determining the tray size; choosing an appropriate lid, having unfolded flaps, based on the tray size; folding the lid flaps; and guiding said lid onto the tray.
- 17. A method of automatically removing lids on different size trays, the method comprises the steps of:
contacting a lid; and removing said lid from a tray,
- 18. The method of claim 17, further comprising the steps of;
cutting a strap binding the lid to the tray; and removing the strap from the lid and the tray.
- 19. A method for automatically removing a strap from a container having a lid comprising the steps of:
lifting the strap away from a first surface of the container using a hook; directing the strap into a rotating cutter; cutting the strap; pulling the strap away from a second surface of the container; and directing the strap away from the container.
- 20. The method of claim 19, further-comprising the step of;
moving the container in a direction approximately perpendicular to the strap, such that the strap is caught by the hook.
- 21. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of:
moving the hook in a direction ;approximately perpendicular to the strap, such that the strap is caught by the hook.
- 22. The method of claim 19, wherein the first surface is the top of the lid.
- 23. The method of claim 19, wherein the second surface is the bottom of the container.
- 24. The method of claim 19, wherein the pulling step is performed by a second hook.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the pulling step is also performed by a pair of rotary rollers.
- 26. A method of automatically placing an unfolded lid having end flaps and side flaps on a container, comprising the steps of:
grabbing the unfolded lid from a stack of unfolded lids; transporting the grabbed unfolded lid to a position over the container; folding in the end flaps such that they will be inserted inside the container; pressing the lid down onto the container, thereby inserting the folded end flaps inside the container, while the side flaps remain outside the container.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein said grabbing step is performed using vacuum assistance.
- 28. The method of claim 26, further comprising the step of; raising the stack of lids so that the unfolded lid can be grabbed.
- 29. A method for automatically removing a lid from a container, comprising the steps of:
grabbing the lid; lifting the lid up; transporting the lid to a stack of unfolded lids; and placing the lid onto the stack of unfolded lids.
- 30. The method of claim 29, further comprising the steps of: raising the stack of lids so that the lid can be placed; and lowering the stack of lids so that the lid can be placed.
