Claims
- 1. In a production line adapted to be changed over from production of panel-like workpieces of a first configuration to the production of panel-like workpieces of a second configuration, said production line including a first work station and a second work station, and workpiece handling means for transferring workpieces from said first station to said second station along a flow path, the improvement wherein said workpiece handling means comprises:
- a bridge structure supported between said first and second work stations;
- means for moving said bridge structure normal to the flow path between said first and second work stations;
- independently operable power lift devices carried by said bridge structure;
- shuttle conveyor means for reciprocally moving along the flow path, said shuttle conveyor means carried by said independently operable power lift devices to selectively raise and lower said shuttle conveyor means;
- workpiece gripping means carried by said shuttle conveyor means, said shuttle conveyor means being extendable to position said workpiece gripping means into the first work station for engaging a workpiece disposed therein and for moving said workpiece from said first work station to said second work station and for positioning said workpiece therein, said bridge structure and power lift devices being movable in timed relationship to the movement of said shuttle conveyor means so as to transfer said workpiece from said first work station to said second work station.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said moving means including a programmable carrier means for moving said workpiece gripping means into operable position with respect to said flow path;
- said workpiece gripping means including alternatively usable first and second workpiece gripping means each respectively adapted to releasably grip and carry a workpiece of said first configuration and a workpiece of said second configuration;
- holding means for releasably fixedly holding either of said first and second gripping means in a ready position in adjacent spaced relationship to at least one of said first and second work stations and said shuttle conveyor means;
- coupling means, disposed on said carrier means and said first and second gripping means, for cooperably, detachably mounting either of said first and second gripping means on said carrier means, said coupling means including:
- first mating means on said carrier means;
- second mating means on each of said first and second gripping means movable into and out of engaged relationship with each other by a predetermined movement of said carrier means relative to the first and second gripping means; and
- locking means movable between a release position accommodating relative movement between said first and second mating means into and out of said engaged relationship and a locking position mechanically locking said first and second mating means in said engaged relationship to fixedly mount one of the first and second gripping means on said carrier means;
- said programmable carrier means further being operable for moving one of said first and second gripping means mounted thereon along a changeover path extending from said flow path to said ready position.
- 3. The improvement of claim 2 further comprising:
- each of said first and second gripping means adapted to overlie workpieces of first and second configurations respectively and to grip the workpiece from above;
- said shuttle conveyor means including:
- first transfer means for transferring a workpiece from said first work station to a receiving location;
- second transfer means for transferring a workpiece from a discharge location to said second work station;
- at least one carriage movable along said flow path extending between said receiving location and said discharge location;
- alternatively usable first and second workpiece receiving nests adapted to be detachably mounted on said carriage to respectively support workpieces of first and second configurations from beneath;
- one of the first and second gripping means mounted on said first transfer means for operably lowering said workpiece onto one of said first and second nests when at said receiving location; and
- an identical one of the first and second gripping means mounted on said second transfer means for operably lifting one of said workpieces from said one of said first and second nests when at said discharge location.
- 4. The improvement of claim 3 wherein said shuttle conveyor means further comprises:
- each of said first and second transfer means including a fixedly mounted main frame and means for mounting said carrier means on said main frame for movement within said vertical plane; and
- said at least one carriage including a first carriage mounted on a first platform having a first longitudinal axis and a second carriage mounted on a second platform having a second longitudinal axis, and power means for moving said first and second platforms along said changeover path normal to said vertical plane and the first and second longitudinal axes, said power means to selectively locate the longitudinal axis of one of said first and second platforms in said vertical plane.
- 5. The improvement of claim 2 further comprising:
- each of said first and second gripping means including:
- a frame; and
- power actuated gripping units mounted on said frame;
- said first and second mating means including a first power connector means mounted on said carrier means and connected to a power source, and a second power connector means mounted on each of said first and second gripping means and connected to the gripping units mounted thereon, said first and second connector means connecting said power source to the gripping units of said first and second gripping means when mounted on said carrier means and locked in said engaged relationship.
- 6. The improvement of claim 2 further comprising:
- said workpiece handling means operable for transferring at least one workpiece at a time from said first work station to said second work station along said flow path lying within a generally vertical plane;
- said holding means located for holding one of said first and second gripping means in said ready position at a location clear of said flow path; and
- said carrier means and said holding means being movable relative to each other along said changeover path extending transversely of said flow path.
- 7. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- first and second holding means mounted at fixed locations offset from said flow path adjacent said first work station;
- third and fourth holding means mounted at fixed locations offset from said flow path adjacent said second work station; and
- said moving means for independently shifting said workpiece gripping means along respective changeover paths normal to said flow path for selectively positioning said workpiece gripping means at said first work station in alignment with any one of said first holding means, said second holding means, and said flow path, and for selectively positioning said workpiece gripping means at said second work station in alignment with any one of said third holding means, said fourth holding means, and said flow path.
- 8. The improvement of claim 1 further comprising:
- said bridge structure including first and second bridge members, each bridge member carrying independently operable power lift devices; and
- said shuttle conveyor means including first and second shuttle track assemblies carried respectively by said first and second bridge members and adapted for independent operation, each of said first and second shuttle track assemblies being adapted to releasably engage said workpiece gripping means for movement between said first and second work stations.
- 9. The improvement of claim 1, wherein said shuttle conveyor means further comprises:
- an outer frame;
- an inner subframe slidably engaged to said outer frame;
- means for moving said workpiece gripping means along said flow path, said moving means fixedly attached to said inner subframe; and
- means for driving said inner subframe, said driving means fixedly attached to said outer frame.
- 10. The improvement of claim 9 further comprising:
- said inner subframe having substantially an H-shape cross-section of opposing elongate sides and an intermediate member extending perpendicular to and between said sides, said inner subframe extending along said flow path and supporting said moving means about said intermediate member.
- 11. The improvement of claim 10, wherein said moving means further comprises:
- a conveyor having opposing end gears spaced apart and defining the outer limits of said conveyor; and
- a continuous belt extending about said end gears, said belt having teeth means on the inner side thereof meshed with said end gears for rotation about said end gears, said end gears rotatable about an axis perpendicular to said intermediate member of said inner subframe, said belt extending around and rotating about said intermediate member.
- 12. The improvement of claim 11 further comprising:
- at least one gear rack fixedly attached to at least one of said opposing elongate sides of said inner subframe along an axis parallel with said intermediate member, said gear rack having teeth means on the upper side thereof.
- 13. The improvement of claim 12 further comprising:
- locking means having an upper and lower member fixedly attached thereto, wherein said upper member is fixedly attached to said outer frame and said lower member is fixedly attached to said belt.
- 14. The improvement of claim 13 further comprising:
- said workpiece gripping means attached to said belt opposite to said gear rack.
- 15. The improvement of claim 14, wherein said means for driving said inner frame further comprises:
- a motor;
- at least one idler roller; and
- a driving gear, said driving gear meshed with said gear rack for reciprocating said gear rack along said flow path, said reciprocating of said gear rack driving said inner frame along said flow path.
- 16. The improvement of claim 9 further comprising:
- means for rotating said outer frame about an axis normal to said flow path, said rotating means connected to said shuttle conveyor means, wherein said rotating means includes at least one mounting assembly having a circumferential groove defining at least an arc of a circle and having its central axis transverse to said flow path, said mounting assembly slidably attachable to said shuttle conveyor means within said groove.
- 17. In a production line adopted to be changed over from production of workpieces of a first panel-like configuration to the production of workpieces of a second panel-like configuration, said production line including a first work station and a second work station, and workpiece handling means for transferring workpieces from said first station to said second station along a flow path, the improvement wherein said workpiece handling means comprises:
- a first elongated bridge member and a second elongated bridge member having first and second ends and extending longitudinally along said flow path between said first work station and said second work station, said first and second elongated bridge members extending parallel with respect to one another and parallel with respect to said flow path; and
- shuttle conveyor means supported from said first elongated bridge member and said second elongated bridge member for reciprocally moving a single end effector from a first end limit of travel extending along said flow path beyond said first end of said first elongated bridge member and said second elongated bridge member to a second end limit of travel extending along said flow path beyond said second end of said first elongated bridge member and said second elongated bridge member said single end effector for releasably connecting to at least one workpiece while unloading at said first work station, for transporting said at least one workpiece between said first and second work stations, and for loading said at least one workpiece at said second work station.
- 18. The workpiece handling apparatus of claim 17 further comprising:
- each of said bridge members independently moveable transversely with respect to said flow path.
- 19. The workpiece handling apparatus of claim 17 further comprising:
- at least one elongated, transversely extending, interchangeable, workpiece gripping means for releaseably engaging said at least one workpiece, said gripping means having first and second couplings adjacent opposite ends, said first coupling releasably connectible to said single end effector of said shuttle conveyor means supported from said first bridge member and said second coupling releasably connectible to said single end effector of said shuttle conveyor means supported from said second bridge member, such that said shuttle conveyor means acting in tandem with one another move said at least one workpiece from said first work station to said second work station along said flow path when said gripping means is connected between said first and second bridge members.
- 20. In a production line adapted to be changed over from production of workpieces of a first panel-like configuration to the production of workpieces of a second panel-like configuration, said production line including a first work station and a second work station, and workpiece handling means for transferring workpieces from said first station to said second station along a flow path, the improvement wherein said workpiece handling means comprises:
- a first elongated bridge member and a second elongated bridge member for unloading said workpiece from said first work station, for shuttling said workpiece between said first and second work stations, and for loading said workpiece at said second work station, said first and second elongated bridge members extending parallel with respect to one another and parallel with respect to said flow path and having a longitudinal axis extending between said first and second work stations along said flow path and at least one end effector reciprocally movable along said longitudinal axis for connecting to said workpiece; and
- interchangeable, workpiece gripping means connectible to said end effector for selectively, releasably engaging said at least one workpiece during transport by said single means allowing automated changeover between production of said first and second panel-like configurations of workpieces.
- 21. The workpiece handling apparatus of claim 20 further comprising:
- each of said bridge members independently moveable transversely with respect to said flow path.
- 22. The workpiece handling apparatus of claim 21 further comprising:
- each of said first and second bridge members supporting an end effector; and
- said interchangeable, workpiece gripping means elongated and extending transversely with respect to said flow path for releaseably engaging said at least one workpiece, said gripping means having first and second couplings adjacent opposite ends, said first coupling releasably connectible to said end effector supported by said first bridge member and said second coupling releasably connectible to said end effector supported by said second bridge member, such that said end effectors acting in tandem with one another move said at least one workpiece from said first work station to said second work station along said flow path when said gripping means is connected between said first and second bridge members.

This is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 07/756,492 filed on Sep. 9, 1991 entitled AUTOMATIC TOOL CHANGER, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,222,854, and this case is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 07/978,134 filed on Nov. 18, 1992 entitled WORKPIECE TRANSFER DEVICE, now abandoned, which is a divisional application of application Ser. No. 07/665,029 filed on Mar. 6, 1991 and now U.S. Pat. No. 5,174,709. U.S. Pat. No. 5,174,709 is incorporated herein by reference.
