- 2. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said bus consists of a single pair of wires.
- 3. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising a sensor and diagnostic module coupled to said first bus for monitoring said controller of each of said at least one airbag module.
- 4. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said at least one crash sensor is structured and arranged to generate coded signals when deployment of said airbag of said at least one airbag module is desired and said controller is structured and arranged to receive the coded signals and control inflation of said airbag by said inflator assembly based thereon.
- 5. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said controller includes a power supply for enabling initiation of said inflator assembly.
- 6. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising an occupant position sensor arranged to detect the position of the occupant to be protected by said airbag of said at least one airbag module and being coupled to said first bus, said controller being structured and arranged to control inflation of said airbag by said inflator assembly in consideration of the detected position of the occupant.
- 7. The vehicle of claim 6, wherein said occupant position sensor is arranged in said housing.
- 8. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said controller is arranged in said housing.
- 9. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said at least one airbag module comprises a plurality of airbag modules, said controllers in said airbag modules being assigned a unique address whereby information conveyed over said first bus includes an address of a respective one of said controllers such that only said respective one of said controllers assigned to said address is responsive to the information including said address.
- 10. The vehicle of claim 9, wherein said controllers include means for determining whether the information conveyed over said first bus includes said address assigned to said controller.
- 11. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein said means comprise a microprocessor.
- 12. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said controller is arranged to acknowledge receipt of a communication via said first bus and indicative operability of said airbag module.
- 13. An electrical system in a vehicle, comprising:
a plurality of sensors each detecting a physical characteristic of the vehicle, at least one of said sensors being a crash sensor which detects a physical characteristic of the vehicle affected by a crash involving the vehicle; at least one airbag module each comprising an airbag, an inflator assembly for inflating said airbag and an electronic controller for controlling inflation of said airbag by said inflator assembly; an electrical bus coupling said crash sensor and said at least one airbag module and conveying at least one of power and information to or from said crash sensor and said at least one airbag module; and a module coupled to said bus and arranged to receive signals from said crash sensor based on the detected physical characteristic of the vehicle and process said signals to provide a control signal to said controller such that inflation of said airbag is controlled by said controller in consideration of the physical characteristic detected by said crash sensor.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein said crash sensor is a crush-detecting sensor.
- 15. The system of claim 13, wherein said at least one airbag module comprises a housing, said airbag being associated with said housing, said inflator assembly being arranged in said housing and said electronic controller being arranged in or adjacent said housing.
- 16. The system of claim 13, wherein said bus consists of a single pair of wires.
- 17. The system of claim 13, wherein said module is a sensor and diagnostic module which monitors said controller and performs a diagnostic function of said controller.
- 18. The system of claim 13, wherein said controller includes a power supply for enabling initiation of said inflator assembly.
- 19. The system of claim 13, further comprising an occupant position sensor arranged to detect the position of the occupant to be protected by said airbag of said at least one airbag module and being coupled to said bus, said controller being structured and arranged to control inflation of said airbag by said inflator assembly in consideration of the detected position of the occupant.
- 20. The system of claim 13, wherein said at least one airbag module comprises a plurality of airbag modules, said controllers in said airbag modules being assigned a unique address whereby information conveyed over said bus includes an address of a respective one of said controllers such that only said respective one of said controllers assigned to said address is responsive to the information including said address.
- 21. The system of claim 20, wherein said controllers include means for determining whether the information conveyed over said bus includes said address assigned to said controller.
- 22. The system of claim 21, wherein said means comprise a microprocessor.
