Claims
- 1. An automotive engine-cooling fan assembly, comprising:
a motor having a driveshaft defining a central axis; and a fan driven by the motor, the fan including
an inner hub portion coupled to the driveshaft; an outer hub portion coupled to the inner hub portion, the outer hub portion coupled to a plurality of radially-extending blades; and a plurality of vibration isolation members interconnecting the inner hub portion and the outer hub portion.
- 2. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the inner hub portion extends radially with respect to the central axis and the outer hub portion extends axially along the central axis, and wherein the vibration isolation members extend both radially and axially with respect to the central axis.
- 3. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the vibration isolation members extend axially from an interior surface of the inner hub portion toward the motor.
- 4. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 3, wherein the motor is an air-cooled motor, and wherein the vibration isolation members are operable to generate a cooling airflow through the motor.
- 5. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 3, wherein a portion of the vibration isolation members are spaced from the interior surface of the inner hub portion.
- 6. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 3, further comprising a plurality of radially-extending slots formed in the outer hub portion, the plurality of radially-extending slots being aligned with the respective plurality of vibration isolation members.
- 7. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 6, wherein the slots have a width greater than a thickness of the vibration isolation members.
- 8. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the outer hub portion includes a plurality of projections extending between adjacent vibration isolation members, and wherein a circumferential gap exists between each projection and the inner hub portion.
- 9. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 8, wherein the plurality of projections define therebetween radially-extending slots aligned with the respective vibration isolation members.
- 10. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 8, wherein adjacent pairs of projections and vibration isolation members define therebetween a radially-extending slot.
- 11. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 10, wherein a single vibration isolation member is disposed between two radially-extending slots.
- 12. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 8, wherein the outer hub portion defines two adjacent radially-extending slots therein, and wherein radially-inner ends of the adjacent slots open up into the circumferential gap.
- 13. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the vibration isolation members axially extend from the inner hub portion toward the motor.
- 14. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 1, wherein the inner hub portion and the outer hub portion are connected only by the vibration isolation members.
- 15. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 1, wherein radially innermost edges of the vibration isolation members are spaced from the driveshaft of the motor such that the driveshaft is coupled to a substantially planar region of the inner hub portion without ribs.
- 16. An automotive engine-cooling fan assembly comprising a fan and a motor having a driveshaft, the fan comprising a hub and radially extending blades, the hub comprising a radially extending face coupled to the driveshaft and an axially-extending outer portion to which the blades are integrally attached, the hub further comprising a plurality of radially-extending ribs attached to an interior surface of the face and the outer portion of the hub, the ribs having unattached portions between the face and the outer portion of the hub, the face being connected to the outer portion of the hub only through the ribs.
- 17. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the motor is ventilated, and wherein the ribs extend toward the motor and are spaced from the motor by a running clearance of less than about 6 mm to generate a cooling airflow through the motor.
- 18. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein an axial gap exists between a portion of the ribs and the interior surface of the face.
- 19. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 18, wherein the axial gap is between the unattached portions of the ribs and the interior surface of the face.
- 20. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 18, further comprising a plurality of radially-extending slots in the outer portion of the hub, the slots aligned with the respective plurality of ribs.
- 21. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 20, wherein the slots have a width greater than a thickness of the ribs.
- 22. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the outer portion of the hub includes a plurality of projections extending between adjacent ribs, and wherein a circumferential gap exists between each projection and the face.
- 23. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 22, wherein the plurality of projections define therebetween radially-extending slots aligned with the respective ribs.
- 24. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 22, wherein adjacent pairs of projections and ribs define therebetween a radially-extending slot.
- 25. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 24, wherein a single rib is disposed between two radially-extending slots.
- 26. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 22, wherein the outer hub portion defines two adjacent radially-extending slots therein, and wherein radially-inner ends of the adjacent slots open up into the circumferential gap.
- 27. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the ribs extend axially from the face toward the motor.
- 28. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the hub defines a convex side and a concave side, and wherein the ribs are attached to the concave side of the hub.
- 29. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the unattached portions of the ribs have a thickness of about 3.5 mm or less.
- 30. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the unattached portions of the ribs have a radial length of at least 5 times a thickness of the unattached portions of the ribs.
- 31. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein the unattached portions of the ribs have an axial depth of at least twice a thickness of the unattached portions of the ribs.
- 32. The automotive engine-cooling fan assembly of claim 16, wherein radially innermost edges of the ribs are spaced from the driveshaft of the motor such that the driveshaft is coupled to a substantially planar region of the face without ribs.
