Claims
- 1. An axial vane rotary device comprising:
- a) a stator with a cylindrical internal chamber defined by an annular outer wall and two side walls of the stator, each said side wall having an annular cam surface;
- b) a rotor rotatably mounted within the chamber, the rotor having an annular outer wall and a plurality of angularly spaced-apart, axial slots extending therethrough; a vane slidably received in each said slot, each said vane having an outer edge, an inner edge and side edges, the side edges slidably engaging the cam surfaces;
- c) alternating first portions and second portions on the cam surfaces, the second portions being further from the rotor than the first portions, the first portions of one said cam surface being aligned with the second portions of another said cam surface; and
- d) means for reciprocating the vanes independently of the cam surfaces including a guide cam on the outer wall of the stator and a follower on each said vane received by the guide cam, the guide cam being a groove in the annular outer wall of the stator, the follower including a cylindrical pin on the outer edge of each said vane, the follower including a member rotatably received on the pin, the member being elongated in a direction parallel to the groove.
- 2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cam surfaces and the guide cam extend about the stator in an undulating pattern with the guide cam being a constant distance from each of the cam surfaces, the outer edges of the vanes being constantly in contact with the cam surfaces as the rotor rotates.
- 3. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the groove is midway between the cam surfaces.
- 4. An axial vane rotary device comprising:
- a) a stator with a cylindrical internal chamber defined by an annular outer wall and two side walls of the stator, each said side wall having an annular cam surface;
- b) a rotor rotatably mounted within the chamber, the rotor having an annular outer wall and a plurality of angularly spaced-apart axial slots extending therethrough;
- c) a vane slidably received in each said side slot, each said vane having an outer edge, an inner edge and side edges, the side edges slidably engaging the cam surface, each of the vanes having a first groove extending along the inner edge and second grooves extending along the side edges thereof;
- d) alternating first portions and second portions on the cam surfaces, the second portions being further from the rotor then the first portions, the first portions of one said cam surface being aligned with the second portions of another said cam surface;
- e) resiliently biased first seals slidably received in the first grooves and second seals slidably received in the second grooves;
- f) means for biasing the first seals towards the rotor;
- g) means for biasing the second seals toward the cam surfaces; and
- h) means for biasing the first seals towards the second seals.
- 5. A device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the second seals having radially inner ends which are acutely angled with respect to the side edges of the vanes and the first seals have axially outer ends which are acutely angled with respect to the side edges of the vanes and which abut the inner ends of the second seals.
- 6. A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the axially outer ends of the first seals have radially inner portions adjacent the cam surfaces which extend parallel to the side edges of the vanes, the acutely angled portions of the first seals extending away from the cam surfaces and radially outwards.
- 7. A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein the seals are resiliently biased by springs within the grooves between the vanes and the seals.
- 8. A device as claimed in claim 7, wherein the springs are curved leaf springs.
- 9. A device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the rotor has a pocket formed adjacent the cam surface at each said slot and located radially inwards from each said vane, the pockets having seals therein which slidably contact the cam surfaces and the inner edges of the vanes.
- 10. A device as claimed in claim 9, wherein the seals in the pockets are block shaped and have slots which slidably receive the first seals.
- 11. A device as claimed in claim 9, wherein the rotor has side walls, each said side wall having a circular segment grooves extending between said pockets, each said circular segment groove having an elongated seal therein extending between the seals in the pockets an biased towards an adjacent side wall of the stator.
- 12. An axial vane rotary device comprising:
- a) a stator with a cylindrical internal chamber defined by an annular outer wall and two side walls of the stator, each said side wall having an annular cam surface;
- b) a rotor rotatably mounted within the chamber, the rotor having an annular outer wall and a plurality of angularly spaced-apart, axial slots extending therethrough;
- c) a vane slidably received in each said slot, each said vane having an outer edge, an inner edge and side edges the side edges slidably engaging the cam surfaces, each of the vanes having resiliently biased first seals extending along the inner edge and second seals along the side edges thereof;
- d) alternating first portions and second portions on the cam surfaces, the second portions being further from the rotor than the first portions, the first portions of one said cam surface being aligned with the second portions of another same cam surface;
- e) the rotor having a pocket formed adjacent the cam surface at each said slot and located radially inwards from each said vane, the pockets having seals therein which slidably contact the cam surfaces and the inner edges of the vanes.
