BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1) Field of the Invention

The invention relates to the field of personal and domestic articles including cosmetic treatment equipment, more specifically, an applicator comprising a pad and at least one reservoir.


2) Description of Related Art

Various creams, balms, powders, ointments, unguents and the like have been applied for centuries to the human back, body, hair, face for various purposes, including but not limited to as cosmetics, medicines, for religious purposes, and the like. Sometimes the method and manner of application is important. Variations in application may interfere with the benefits expected from the materials. Further, various materials may be more or less difficult to apply, to apply consistently, to apply safely, etc.


Accordingly, various devices and techniques for applying these materials have been developed. These include but are not limited to cotton balls, pads and various pads with handles.


In another example, brushes, sponges, dabbers/dabbing pads, gloves, and swabs are often used to apply materials to surfaces. Such brushes/pads are often used to apply lotion and creams to the skin. Similarly, such tools may be used medicinally to apply antiseptic, topical ointments, medicines to be absorbed through the skin, and the like. However, these devices do not work well when the point of application is an individual's back and the individual is self-administering the lotion or cream.


Accordingly, there exists a need for a system that that incorporates a reusable and extendable lotion and cream applicator that also has a built-in back scratcher and reservoir for the lotion or cream.


BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The instant invention in one form is directed to a device to apply lotion or cream to an individual's back and has been developed in response to the present state of the art, and in particular, in response to the problems and needs in the art that have not yet been fully solved by currently available applicators. Accordingly, the present invention has been developed to provide an applicator for manual application of materials to an individual.


The instant invention is an applicator that is configured for use with a lotion or cream. However, any suitable material can be applied with the invention. The instant invention is configured for self-application of lotion or cream to an individual's back. The instant invention is configured to extend the reach of the person such that the lotion or cream can be applied to locations that are otherwise difficult to reach. At least one embodiment of the back cream applicator comprises a telescopic handle, an application head with a refillable reservoir, and a scratching device. The application head applies the lotion or cream to a user's skin, preferably to their back. The refillable reservoir contains the lotion or cream for use by the application head. The telescopic handle is an extension apparatus that extends the user's reach.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

While various aspects and features of certain embodiments have been summarized above, the following detailed description illustrates a few exemplary embodiments in further detail to enable one skilled in the art to practice such embodiments. The described examples are provided for illustrative purposes and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.


In the following description, for the purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the described embodiments. It will be apparent to one skilled in the art however, that other embodiments of the present invention may be practiced without some of these specific details. Several embodiments are described herein, and while various features are ascribed to different embodiments, it should be appreciated that the features described with respect to one embodiment may be incorporated with other embodiments as well. By the same token however, no single feature or features of any described embodiment should be considered essential to every embodiment of the invention, as other embodiments of the invention may omit such features.


In this application the use of the singular includes the plural unless specifically stated otherwise and use of the terms “and” and “or” is equivalent to “and/or,” also referred to as “non-exclusive or” unless otherwise indicated. Moreover, the use of the term “including,” as well as other forms, such as “includes” and “included,” should be considered non-exclusive. As this invention is susceptible to embodiments of many different forms, it is intended that the present disclosure be considered as an example of the principles of the invention and not intended to limit the invention to the specific embodiments shown and described.


The terms lotion and cream are used interchangeably to mean any substance that can be applied with the instant invention including ointments, creams, gels, pastes, creams, salts and liquids.


The terms user, individual, person, and patient are used interchangeably to mean any person using the instant invention.


The instant invention is a two-in-one product that combines lotion application with scratching in hard-to-reach places. At least one embodiment of the product is designed to be easily manufactured with mostly plastic manufacturing processes that incorporate thermoplastics such as ABS plastic. The product has 5 components the numerical identifiers can be found in FIG. 1-21; With reference to the accompanying figures, the device comprises a reversible lotion applicator head, main handle, threaded lock collar, extendable scratch handle, and a lock pin. There is also a component lotion pad, which is attached to provide the user with an effective surface to apply lotion for personal use, which may comprise a rubber, elastic, or foam material and can be removed and replaced.


The instant invention also has an extendable scratch handle that can be used to change the operating length of the device. The device as depicted in FIG. 1 can be from 10 to 38 inches in overall length when extended, though these dimensions may vary in alternate embodiments. The individual may operate the device at any length in the given range.


Additionally, the instant invention has a reservoir for the cream, which in some embodiments, may be refillable, and the lotion pad can be attached to the applicator head. The refillable reservoir can be part of the reversible lotion applicator head, or it can be a separate cavity which allows for the transfer of the lotion or cream from the refillable reservoir to the applicator head.


The instant invention can also have the following features: refillable reservoir, reversible lotion applicator head, main handle, threaded lock collar for extending the handle and locking the handle in place, extendable scratch handle, and lock pin.


The instant invention can be summarized as a lotion applicator comprised of reversible lotion application end effector on the distal end of a handle and a scratching end effector on the proximal end of a handle. The handle adjustably connects to the reversible lotion application end effector and the scratching end effector and the reversible lotion application end effector. The lotion applicator has a first reservoir, and the first reservoir is removable and configured to receive a lotion pad; the handle has a threaded lock collar, lock pin, second reservoir and a pump.


The instant invention provides a method to apply lotion and it provides the user different methods to apply the lotion. The lotion can be applied to the first reservoir which is part of the reversible lotion application end effector; it can be applied to the lotion pad and the lotion pad can be installed in the reversible lotion application end effector; or it can be applied using a pumping mechanism and second reservoir to distribute the lotion to the first reservoir.


Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to FIG. 1, there is shown an isometric view of the instant invention showing the lotion applicator 100 at the distal end 500. The lotion applicator 100 comprises a main handle 102. A portion of the main handle 102 comprises a grip 103, which may be gripped by a user during operation of the applicator 100. A lotion applicator head 101 is attached to an end of the main handle 102. In at least one embodiment, the lotion applicator head 101 is reversible as more fully described below. In various embodiments, the lotion applicator head 101 may be connected to the main handle 102 or may be integrally formed. A threaded lock collar 104 is disposed adjacent the end of the main handle 102 that is opposite the applicator head 100. The threaded lock collar 104 serves to removably retain an extendable scratch handle 105. In the embodiment of FIG. 1, an end of the extendable scratch handle 105 is disposed within a recess of the main handle 102. The end of the extendable scratch handle 105 opposite the threaded lock collar 104 comprises a scratcher 107 at the proximal end 501. The scratcher 107 may be connected to the extendable scratch handle 105, or may be integrally formed. A recess in the applicator head 101 forms a reservoir 111 for retention of lotion.


In various, but not all embodiments, a lotion pad 114 is removably disposed within the reservoir 111 to provide the user with an effective surface to apply lotion for personal use. The lotion pad 114 is preferably made from an absorbent or porous material. It may be removably disposed within the reservoir by means of, as a non-limiting example, a hook-and-loop fastener, such as Velcro®.


Referring to FIG. 2, there is shown an exploded isometric view of the instant invention showing the instant invention applicator 100, reversible lotion applicator head 101, main handle 102, threaded lock collar 104, extendable scratch handle 105, grip 103, scratcher 107, lock pin 115 and reservoir 111.


Referring to FIG. 3, there is shown a view of the instant invention in the closed position. The lotion pad 114 is attached to the lotion applicator head 101. The guide 123 for lock pin 115 can be seen in this view. Lock pin 115 fits into extendable scratch handle 105 and is secured to extendable scratch handle 105 by a press fit or alternatively by an adhesive. The lock pin 115 prevents the extendable scratch handle 105 from coming out of the main handle 102 if the threaded lock collar 104 becomes loose during use. The guide 123 for the lock pin 115 allows the lock pin to slide to accommodate adjustment of the extendable scratch handle 105 as it slides in and out of the main handle 102 and it also prevents the extendable scratch handle 105 from rotating during use.


Referring to FIG. 4, there is shown an exploded side view of the instant invention. The reversible lotion applicator head 101 is detachable from the main handle 102.


Referring to FIG. 5, there is shown an isometric view of the scratcher 107 of the instant invention. The scratcher 107 has a through cavity 108 and scratcher head 109. The through cavity can provide a convenient method of hanging the instant invention when not in use. The scratcher 107 can also be removably attached to the extendable scratch handle 105 using a threaded coupling 119. The grooves 120 and ridges 139 in the scratcher head 109 provide a convenient means to apply concentrated force at the ridges to the individual's skin.


Referring to FIG. 6 there is shown a top view of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 of the instant invention. The reversible lotion applicator head 101 has a reversible tab 110 with holes 550 that slides into the receiver 122 (as shown in FIG. 8) of the main handle 102. The individual using the instant invention 100 places lotion or cream into the reservoir 111 (as shown in FIG. 7) and then can attach the lotion pad 114 (as shown in FIG. 1), which is removably attachable to reservoir 111.


Referring to FIG. 7 there is shown a bottom view of the reversible lotion application head 101 of the instant invention showing the reservoir 111. The reservoir 111 is a cavity in the reversible lotion applicator head 101. A user places lotion or cream into the reservoir 111 and then can either attach the lotion pad 114 (as shown in FIG. 1) which is removably attachable to reservoir 111 or use the instant invention 100 without the lotion pad 114 to apply lotion to their back. The ability for the individual to selectively use the instant invention 100 with or without the lotion pad 114 to apply lotion to their back is due to the gripping feature of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 reservoir 111 which grips the lotion pad 114 using the rim 138 that captures the lotion pad 114. However, the gripping can also be accomplished by using a hook-and-loop fastener, clips or a clamping/hook mechanism. The reversible tab 110 slides into the receiver 122 which captures the reversible tab 110 by gripping onto the reversible tab 110 by side pressure from the receiver 122. However, the gripping can also be accomplished by using a hook-and-loop fastener, clips, or a clamping/hook mechanism.


Referring to FIG. 8 there is shown an isometric view of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 in position 1. The lotion pad 114 is attached to the lotion applicator head 101. Position 1 of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 allows the individual to utilize the reversible lotion applicator head 101 with the broad applicator feature 510 facing out to provide a mechanism to apply cream to a large surface.


Referring to FIG. 9 there is shown a top view of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 in position 1 positioned in the receiver 122 of the instant invention.


Referring to FIG. 10 there is shown an isometric view of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 in position 2. Position 2 of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 allows the individual to utilize the reversible lotion applicator head 101 with the narrow applicator feature 511 facing out to provide a mechanism to apply lotion or cream to a small surface.


Referring to FIG. 11 there is shown a top view of the reversible lotion applicator head 101 in position 2, positioned in the receiver 122 of the instant invention.


Referring to FIG. 12 there is shown a view of the instant invention 100 in the closed position showing the lock pin 115 and the guide 123. When in a closed position the lock pin 115 is located at the proximal end of guide 123 and engages the main handle 102 so that the extendable scratch handle 105 is held so that it cannot rotate. The lock pin 115 prevents the scratch handle 105 from exiting or rotating within the main handle 102 during user operation. The primary feature of lock pin 115 is to prevent the extendable scratch handle 105 from coming out of the main handle 102 if the threaded lock collar 104 becomes loose during use. The guide 123 for the lock pin 115 allows the lock pin to slide to accommodate adjustment of the extendable scratch handle 105 as it slides in and out of the main handle 102 and it also prevents the extendable scratch handle 105 from rotating during use as the lock pin 115 extends beyond the outer diameter of the extendable scratch handle 105 and the guide 123 resists any rotation of the extendable scratch handle 105 in the main handle 102.


Referring to FIG. 13 there is shown a view of the instant invention 100 showing the threads 113 without the threaded lock collar 104.


Referring to FIG. 14 there is shown a view of the instant invention 100 showing the threaded lock collar 104 attached to the main handle 102 and scratch handle 105 of the instant invention 100. The threaded lock collar 104 is shown in a transparent state.


Referring to FIG. 15 there is shown a view of the instant invention 100 showing the threaded lock collar 104 attached to the main handle 102 and scratch handle 105 of the instant invention 100. Tightening of the threaded lock collar 104 applies a retaining force on the scratch handle 105, fixing it in place at the user's desired length.


Referring to FIG. 16 there is shown a top view of the back scratcher 107 of the instant invention. The scratcher 107 has a through cavity 108 and scratcher head 109.

An alternate embodiment for instant invention 100 is shown in FIG. 20. In this embodiment, the main handle 102 comprises a reservoir 132, which retains lotion or cream. A pump 130 is in fluid communication with the reservoir 132. Operation of the pump 130 by a user forces the lotion or cream from the reservoir 132 through an orifice 134 adjacent the reservoir 111 of the applicator head 101. The pumping mechanism uses an air pressure bulb 130 connected to a hose 131, which pressurizes the refillable reservoir 132 and sends lotion or cream from the refillable reservoir 132 through a tube 133 and through the orifice 134, which supplies lotion or cream to reservoir 111.


As shown in FIG. 21, an alternate embodiment of the instant invention has a pump 128, which can be an electric or battery operated pump or a syringe device. If the pump 128 is electrically driven, then the main handle 102 is equipped with a battery holder 127 and a battery 126 disposed therein, and a switch 129 to turn the pump 128 on and off, facilitating delivery of the cream or lotion from refillable reservoir 132 to the reservoir 111. This embodiment can also be used with the lotion pad 114 of the preceding Figures. The refillable reservoir 132 can alternatively be a replaceable prefilled reservoir containing cream or lotion.


The invention can also be described as an alternative lotion applicator comprising:


a reversible lotion application end effector on the distal end of a handle;


the reversible lotion application end effector attached to the distal end of the handle such that the reversible lotion application end effector has a first position and a second position;


a scratching end effector on the proximal end of the handle;


the handle enabled to adjustably change the length of the handle connecting the reversible lotion application end effector and the scratching end effector;


the handle having a main handle and an extendable scratch handle and the main handle is jointed to the extendable scratch handle with a threaded lock collar;


the reversible lotion application end effector having a first reservoir and the first reservoir removably enabled to receive a lotion pad, and


the handle having a threaded lock collar and a lock pin,


The alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector narrow applicator feature faces the proximal end of the handle when in the first position.


The alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector broad applicator feature faces the proximal end of the handle when in the second position.


The alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector has a reversible tab that is slidably enabled to slide into a receiver in the distal end of the main handle.


The alternative lotion applicator wherein the handle has a guide and a lock pin and the lock pin is slidably located in the guide to accommodate adjusting the length of the handle such that the lock pin prevents the handle from rotating during use.


The alternative lotion applicator wherein the handle has a guide and a lock pin and the lock pin is slidably located in the guide to accommodate adjusting the length of the handle such that the lock pin prevents the extendable scratch from coming out of the main handle from when the threaded lock collar is loose during use.

The invention can also be described as a second alternative lotion applicator comprising:


a reversible lotion application end effector on the distal end of a handle;


the reversible lotion application end effector attached to the distal end of the handle such that the reversible lotion application end effector has a first position and a second position;


a scratching end effector on the proximal end of the handle;


the handle enabled to adjustably change the length of the handle connecting the reversible lotion application end effector and the scratching end effector;


the handle having a main handle and an extendable scratch handle and the main handle is jointed to the extendable scratch handle with a threaded lock collar;


the reversible lotion application end effector having a first reservoir and the first reservoir removably enabled to receive a lotion pad, and


the handle having a threaded lock collar, lock pin, second reservoir and a pump.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector narrow applicator feature faces the proximal end of the handle when in the first position.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector broad applicator feature faces the proximal end of the handle when in the second position.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector has a reversible tab that is slidably enabled to slide into a receiver in the distal end of the main handle.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the handle has a guide and a lock pin and the lock pin is slidably located in the guide to accommodate adjusting the length of the handle such that the lock pin prevents the handle from rotating during use.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the handle has a guide and a lock pin and the lock pin is slidably located in the guide to accommodate adjusting the length of the handle such that the lock pin prevents the extendable scratch from coming out of the main handle from when the threaded lock collar is loose during use.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the reversible lotion application end effector having a first reservoir is in communication with the second reservoir and the pump is in communication with the second reservoir and the first reservoir such that the pump pumps lotion contained in the second reservoir to the first reservoir.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the lotion pad is attached to the first reservoir using Velcro.


The second alternative lotion applicator wherein the scratching end effector has grooves and ridges.


Since many modifications, variations, and changes in detail can be made to the described embodiments of the invention, it is intended that all matters in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, it is understood that any of the features presented in the embodiments may be integrated into any of the other embodiments unless explicitly stated otherwise. The scope of the invention should be determined by the appended claims and their legal equivalents.


In addition, the present invention has been described with reference to embodiments, it should be noted and understood that various modifications and variations can be crafted by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. Accordingly, the foregoing disclosure should be interpreted as illustrative only and is not to be interpreted in a limiting sense. Further it is intended that any other embodiments of the present invention that result from any changes in application or method of use or operation, method of manufacture, shape, size, or materials which are not specified within the detailed written description or illustrations contained herein are considered within the scope of the present invention.


Insofar as the description above and the accompanying drawings disclose any additional subject matter that is not within the scope of the claims below, the inventions are not dedicated to the public and the right to file one or more applications to claim such additional inventions is reserved.


Although very narrow claims are presented herein, it should be recognized that the scope of this invention is much broader than presented by the claim. It is intended that broader claims will be submitted in an application that claims the benefit of priority from this application.


While this invention has been described with respect to at least one embodiment, the present invention can be further modified within the spirit and scope of this disclosure. This application is therefore intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of the invention using its general principles. Further, this application is intended to cover such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practice in the art to which this invention pertains and which fall within the limits of the appended claims.

Claims
  • 1. A lotion applicator comprising: a. a reversible lotion application end effector on the distal end of a handle;b. said reversible lotion application end effector attached to said distal end of said handle such that said reversible lotion application end effector has a first position and a second position;c. a scratching end effector on the proximal end of said handle;d. said handle enabled to adjustably change the length of said handle connecting said reversible lotion application end effector and said scratching end effector;e. said handle having a main handle and an extendable scratch handle and said main handle is jointed to said extendable scratch handle with a threaded lock collar;f. said reversible lotion application end effector having a first reservoir and said first reservoir removably enabled to receive a lotion pad, andg. said handle having a threaded lock collar and a lock pin,
  • 2. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector narrow applicator feature faces the proximal end of said handle when in said first position.
  • 3. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector broad applicator feature faces the proximal end of said handle when in said second position.
  • 4. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector has a reversible tab that is slidably enabled to slide into a receiver in said distal end of said main handle.
  • 5. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said handle has a guide and a lock pin and said lock pin is slidably located in said guide to accommodate adjusting said length of said handle such that said lock pin prevents said handle from rotating during use.
  • 6. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said handle has a guide and a lock pin and said lock pin is slidably located in said guide to accommodate adjusting said length of said handle such that said lock pin prevents said extendable scratch from coming out of said main handle from when said threaded lock collar is loose during use.
  • 7. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said lotion pad is attached to said first reservoir using Velcro.
  • 8. The lotion applicator of claim 1 wherein said scratching end effector has grooves and ridges.

A lotion applicator comprising: a. a reversible lotion application end effector on the distal end of a handle;b. said reversible lotion application end effector attached to said distal end of said handle such that said reversible lotion application end effector has a first position and a second position;c. a scratching end effector on the proximal end of said handle;d. said handle enabled to adjustably change the length of said handle connecting said reversible lotion application end effector and said scratching end effector;e. said handle having a main handle and an extendable scratch handle and said main handle is jointed to said extendable scratch handle with a threaded lock collar;f. said reversible lotion application end effector having a first reservoir and said first reservoir removably enabled to receive a lotion pad, andg. said handle having a threaded lock collar, lock pin, second reservoir and a pump.
  • 10. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector narrow applicator feature faces the proximal end of said handle when in said first position.
  • 11. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector broad applicator feature faces the proximal end of said handle when in said second position.
  • 12. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector has a reversible tab that is slidably enabled to slide into a receiver in said distal end of said main handle.
  • 13. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said handle has a guide and a lock pin and said lock pin is slidably located in said guide to accommodate adjusting said length of said handle such that said lock pin prevents said handle from rotating during use.
  • 14. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said handle has a guide and a lock pin and said lock pin is slidably located in said guide to accommodate adjusting said length of said handle such that said lock pin prevents said extendable scratch from coming out of said main handle from when said threaded lock collar is loose during use.
  • 15. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said reversible lotion application end effector having a first reservoir is in communication with said second reservoir and said pump is in communication with said second reservoir and said first reservoir such that said pump pumps lotion contained in said second reservoir to said first reservoir.
  • 16. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said lotion pad is attached to said first reservoir using Velcro.
  • 17. The lotion applicator of claim 9 wherein said scratching end effector has grooves and ridges.
