Claims
- 1. Apparatus comprising:
- (a) an at least partially closed ring to be positioned in a plane perpendicular the axis of a heat exchanger having a tube bundle and shell, said ring having a first surface to be positioned contiguous to the inside surface of a heat exchanger shell and at least one of (1) a first frustoconical beveled surface facing the tube bundle which intersects with said first surface at an angle wherein an acute angle is formed between said first surface and said first beveled surface and (2) an obtuse angle is formed by a second frustoconical beveled surface facing toward the interior surface of said heat exchanger's shell which intersects with said first surface at an angle wherein an obtuse angle is formed between said first surface and said second frustoconical beveled surface; and
- (b) baffle means in cooperation with and at least partially surrounded by and affixed to said ring.
- 2. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the ring is closed and the baffle means comprise a plurality of parallel rods affixed to the ring as a plurality of parallel chords.
- 3. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the ring is closed and the baffle means comprise at least one plate which at least partially traverses the diameter of the ring.
- 4. Apparatus comprising:
- (a) a plurality of parallel tubes arranged to form tube bundle;
- (b) tube support means at leat partially traversing the longitudinal dimension of the tube bundle to support the tubes; and
- (c) at least one at least partially closed ring in cooperation with and affixed to the tube support means and at least partially surrounding the tube bundle, said at least one ring positioned in a plane perpendicular of the axis of a heat exchanger shell used to contain said tube bundle, said ring having a first surface to be positioned contiguous to the inside surface of a shell employed to contain said tube bundle and at least one of (1) a first frustoconical beveled surface facing the tube bundle which intersects with the first surface at an angle wherein an acute angle is formed with said first surface and (2) a second beveled surface facing toward the interior surface of said heat exchanger shell which intersects with said first surface at an angle wherein an obtuse angle is formed between said first surface and said second beveled surface.
- 5. Apparatus as in claim 4 wherein the at least one beveled surface of the at least one ring defines at least a portion of a frustoconical shape.
- 6. Apparatus as in claim 5 wherein the at least one beveled surface of the at least one ring converges toward the longitudinal axis of the tube bundle at a half angle of between about 10.degree. and about 80.degree..
- 7. Apparatus as in claim 6 wherein the at least one beveled surface of the at least one ring converges toward the longitudinal axis of the tube bundle at a half angle of between about 30.degree. and 60.degree..
- 8. Apparatus as in claim 7 wherein there is a single beveled surface on each ring and the beveled surface faces the shell.
- 9. Apparatus as in claim 7 where there is a single beveled surface on each ring and the beveled surface faces the tube bundle.
- 10. Apparatus as in claim 7 wherein there are two beveled surfaces on each ring and both of said beveled surfaces face the shell.
- 11. Apparatus as in claim 7 wherein there are two beveled surfaces on each ring and both of said beveled surfaces face the tube bundle.
- 12. Apparatus as in claim 7 wherein there are two beveled surfaces on each ring and every ring has a parallelogramic cross-section with identical orientation of the parallelogramic cross-sections.
- 13. Apparatus as in claim 8 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one ring having a collapsible portion so that the ring is collapsible to a smaller diameter.
- 14. Apparatus as in claim 10 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one ring having a collapsible portion so that the ring is collapsible to a smaller diameter.
- 15. Apparatus as in claim 12 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one ring having a collapsible portion so that the ring is collapsible to a smaller diameter.
- 16. Apparatus as in claim 9 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one longitudinal member affixed to and traversing at least a portion of each of the plurality of rings, said longitudinal member running in parallel to the common axis about which the baffles are centered.
- 17. Apparatus as in claim 11 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one longitudinal member affixed to and traversing at least a portion of each of the plurality of rings, said longitudinal member running in parallel to the common axis about which the baffles are centered.
- 18. Apparatus as in claim 13 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one longitudinal member affixed to and traversing at least a portion of each of the plurality of rings, said longitudinal member running in parallel to the common axis about which the baffles are centered.
- 19. Apparatus as in claim 14 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one longitudinal member affixed to and traversing at least a portion of each of the plurality of rings, said longitudinal member running in parallel to the common axis about which the baffles are centered.
- 20. Apparatus as in claim 15 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one longitudinal member affixed to and traversing at least a portion of each of the plurality of rings, said longitudinal member running in parallel to the common axis about which the baffles are centered.
- 21. Apparatus comprising:
- (a) a plurality of baffles centered about a common axis and arranged in a plurality of parallel planes, said planes to be positioned perpendicular to the axis of a heat exchanger having a tube bundle and shell, each baffle comprising an at least partially closed ring affixed thereto having a first surface to be positioned contiguous to the inside surface of a heat exchange shell and at least one of (1) a frustoconical beveled surface facing the tube bundle which intersects with the first surface at an angle wherein an acute angle is formed with said first surface and (2) a second beveled surface facing toward the interior surface of said heat exchanger shell which intersects with said first surface at an angle wherein an obtuse angle is formed between said first surface and said second beveled surface and a multiplicity of rods affixed to said ring as a multiplicity of parallel cords and
- (b) at least one longitudinal member affixed to and traversing at least a portion of each of the plurality of rings, said longitudinal member running in parallel to the common axis about which the baffles are centered.
- 22. Apparatus as in claim 21 wherein the at least one beveled surface of the at least one ring defines at least a portion of a frustoconical shape.
- 23. Apparatus of claim 22 wherein the at least one beveled surface of the at least one ring converges toward the longitudinal axis of the tube bundle at a half angle of between 10.degree. and about 80.degree..
- 24. Apparatus of claim 23 wherein the at least one beveled surface of the at least one ring converges toward the longitudinal axis of the tube bundle at a half angle of between 30.degree. and about 60.degree..
- 25. Apparatus of claim 24 wherein there is a single beveled surface on each ring and the beveled surface faces the shell.
- 26. Apparatus as in claim 24 wherein there is a single beveled surface on each ring and the beveled surfaces faces the tube bundle.
- 27. Apparatus as in claim 24 wherein there are two beveled surfaces on each ring and both of said beveled surfaces face the shell.
- 28. Apparatus as in claim 24 wherein there are two beveled surfaces on each ring and both of said beveled surfaces face the tube bundle.
- 29. Apparatus as in claim 24 wherein there are two beveled surfaces on each ring and every ring has a parallelogramic cross-section with identical orientation of the parallelogramic cross-sections.
- 30. Apparatus as in claim 24 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one ring having a collapsible portion so that the ring is collapsible to a smaller diameter.
- 31. Apparatus as in claim 27 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one ring having a collapsible portion so that the ring is collapsible to a smaller diameter.
- 32. Apparatus as in claim 29 wherein there is a plurality of rings with at least one ring having a collapsible portion so that the ring is collapsible to a smaller diameter.
