- 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein the bag clamp includes a clamp leg movable between a retracted position spaced apart from the center blade and an extended position adjacent the center blade by a motor, the bag clamp jointly movable with the pleat fold assembly.
- 8. A method of automatically packaging an air bag for deployment, the method comprising the steps:
- providing an air bag including a first end coupled to a retainer and a second end;
- folding the second end of the air bag and leaving a coupling portion coupling the second end to the first end;
- providing a bubble blade movable between a first position overlying and contacting the coupling portion and a second position removed from overlying and contacting the air bag;
- moving the bubble blade to the first position; and
- forcing a bubble fold in the coupling portion by moving the second end over the bubble blade toward the retainer.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein the step of folding the second end includes the steps of:
- forming side pleats in the air bag substantially extending from the first end to the second end;
- straightening the side pleated air bag; and
- compacting the second end.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 9 wherein the step of straightening includes the steps of:
- providing a pleat fold assembly including a plurality of side pleat blades, and a center blade, jointly movable between a first position adjacent the air bag and a second position;
- providing a bag clamp including a clamp leg movable between a retracted position spaced apart from the center blade and an extended position adjacent the center blade by a motor, the bag clamp jointly movable with the pleat fold assembly;
- clamping the second end of the air bag between the clamp leg in the extended position and the center blade of the pleat fold assembly in the first position subsequent to forming side pleats; and
- moving the side pleat assembly to the second position.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 8 further including the steps of:
- inserting the second end into the retainer;
- moving the bubble blade to the second position; and
- inserting the bubble fold into the retainer.
- 12. A method as claimed in claim 11 wherein the step of moving the second end over the bubble blade includes the steps of:
- providing a first blade movable between a rearward and a forward position;
- providing a second blade independently operable with respect to the first blade, and movable between a retracted position and an extended position;
- supporting the first blade and the second blade in a substantially parallel relationship;
- positioning the first blade and the second blade on opposing sides of the second end of the air bag; and
- moving the first blade and the second blade toward the retainer.
- 13. A method as claimed in claim 12 wherein the step of inserting the second end includes:
- retracting the second blade; and
- moving the first blade to the forward position.
- 14. A method as claimed in claim 13 wherein the step of inserting the bubble fold includes the steps of:
- providing a fold panel pivotally movable from a retracted position to an extended position;
- moving the fold panel to the extended position; and
- retracting the first plate.
- 15. A method of automatically packaging an air bag for deployment, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing an air bag including a first end coupled to a retainer, a second end in a compacted state, and a coupling portion coupling the second end to the first end;
- providing a bubble blade movable between a first position overlying and contacting the coupling portion and a second position removed from overlying and contacting the coupling portion;
- moving the bubble blade to the first position; and
- forcing a bubble fold in the coupling portion by moving the second end over the bubble blade toward the retainer.
- 16. A method as claimed in claim 15 further including the steps of:
