Claims
- 1. An impact resistance composite comprised of one or more layers at least one of said layers comprising a network of filaments selected from the group consisting of polyamide filaments and polyester filaments in a matrix material, wherein the ratio of the thickness of said layer to the equivalent diameter of said filaments is equal to or less than about 12.8.
- 2. A composite as recited in claim 1 wherein said ratio is from 1 to about 10.
- 3. A composite as recited in claim 2 wherein said ratio is from 1 to about 8.
- 4. A composite as recited in claim 3 wherein said ratio is from about 1 to 5.
- 5. A composite as recited in claim 4 wherein said ratio is from about 1.5 to about 3.
- 6. A composite according to claim 2 wherein said network of filaments is formed from polyamide filaments.
- 7. A composite according to claim 6 wherein said polyamide filaments are formed from a polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyhexamethylene adipamide (nylon 66), poly(butyrolactam) (nylon 4), poly(9-aminonoanoic acid) nylon 9), poly(enantholactam) (nylon 7), poly(capryllactam) (nylon 8), polycaprolactam (nylon 6), polyhexamethylene sebacamide (nylon 6,10), polyaminoundecanamide (nylon 11), polydodecanolactam (nylon 12), polyhexamethylene isophthalamide, polyhexamethylene terephthalamide, polycaproamide, poly(nonamethylene azelamide) Nylon 9,9), poly(decamethylene azelamide) (nylon 10,9), poly(decamethylene sebacamide) (nylon 10,10 and poly[bis-(4-aminocyclohexyl)methane 1,10-decanedicarboxamide](Quiana)(trans).
- 8. A composite according to claim 7 wherein said polyamide is selected from the group consisting of poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon 66) poly(caprolactam) (nylon 6), poly(11-aminoundecanamide) (nylon 11) and poly(hexamethylene sebacamide) (nylon 6,10).
- 9. A composite according to claim 8 wherein said polyamide is poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon 66).
- 10. A composite according to claim 9 wherein said polyamide is poly(caprolactam) (nylon 6).
- 11. A composite according to claim 2 wherein said network of filaments is formed from polyester filaments.
- 12. A composite according to claim 11 wherein said polyester filaments are formed from a polyester selected from the group consisting of cyclohexylidene dimethyl eneterephathalate) cis and trans, poly(ethylene-1,5-naphthalate), poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalate), poly(1,4-cyclohexane dimethylene terephthalate) (trans), poly(decamethylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene isophthalate), poly(ethylene oxybenzoate poly(para-hydroxy benzoate), poly(.alpha.,.alpha.dimethylpropiolactone), poly(decamethylene adipate) and poly(ethylene succinate).
- 13. A composite according to claim 12 wherein said polyester is selected from the group consisting of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(1,4-cyclohexane dimethylene terephthalate).
- 14. A composite according to claim 13 wherein said polyester is poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 15. A composite according to claim 2 wherein said polyester is poly(ethylene terephthalate) and said polyamide is selected from the group consisting of poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (nylon 66) and poly caprolactam (nylon 6).
- 16. A composite according to claim 15 wherein said thickness is from about 0.002 to about 0.02 cm.
- 17. A composite according to claim 15 which comprises more than one layer.
- 18. A composite according to claim 19 wherein said filaments are polyethylene filaments having a tensile modulus of at least about 800 g/denier and an energy-to-break of at least 35 j/g.
- 19. A composition according to claim 15 wherein said network of filaments comprises a sheet-like filament array in which said filaments are arranged substantially parallel to one another along a common filament direction.
- 20. A composite according to claim 19 wherein said composite comprises more than one layer, with adjacent layers aligned 90.degree. with respect to the longitudinal axis of the parallel filaments contained in said layers.
- 21. A composite according to claim 19 wherein said composite comprises more than one layer, with adjacent layers aligned 90.degree. with respect to the longitudinal axis of the parallel filaments contained in said layers.
- 22. A composite according to claim 15 wherein said network of filaments comprises a non-woven fabric.
- 23. A composite according to claim 15 wherein the network of filaments comprises a non-woven fabric.
- 24. A composite according to claim 15 wherein the volume fraction of said filaments is at least about 0.4.
- 25. A composite according to claim 15 wherein said matrix material is rigid having a tensile modulus of greater than about 6000 psi (41,300 kpa) measured at 25.degree. C.
- 26. A composite according to claim 15 wherein said matrix material is an elastomeric material having a tensile modulus equal to or less than about 6,000 psi (41,300 kpa) at 25.degree. C.
- 27. A composite according to claim 27 wherein said elastomeric matrix material comprises an elastomer having a glass transition temperature of less than about 0.degree. C.
- 28. A composite according to claim 28 wherein said elastomer has a glass transition temperature of less than about -40.degree. C.
- 29. A composite according to claim 29 wherein said elastomer has a glass transition temperature of less than about -50.degree. C.
- 30. A composite according to claim 27 wherein said elastomeric matrix has tensile modulus of less than about 5,000 psi.
- 31. A composite according to claim 30 wherein said elastomeric matrix material has a tensile modulus of less than about 1,000 psi (6,883 kpa).
- 32. A composite according to claim 31 wherein said elastomeric matrix material has a tensile modulus of less than about 500 psi (3,442 kpa).
- 33. A composite according to claim 15 wherein said network of filaments is comprised of dissimilar filaments having different compositions.
- 34. A composite according to claim 26 wherein said elastomeric material consists essentially of a polystyrene-polyisoprene-polystyrene, tri-block copolymer.
- 35. A composite according to claim 26 wherein said elastomeric material consists essentially of a polystyrene-polyethylene/butylene-polystyrene tri-block copolymer.
- 36. A composite comprising the composite of claim 1 and at least one rigid material laminated to form a rigid composite article.
