Claims
- 1. An active agent dosage form for delivering an active agent formulation to a fluid environment of use over a prolonged period of time comprising:
- a) an active agent formulation; and
- b) an insoluble material for protecting a plurality of discrete portions of the surface of the active agent formulation;
- wherein the amount of surface area unprotected by the insoluble material is greater than the amount of surface area protected by the insoluble material.
- 2. The dosage form of claim 1 wherein the active agent formulation comprises a drug.
- 3. The dosage form of claim 2 wherein the dosage form is administered orally.
- 4. The dosage form of claim 1 wherein delivery of the active agent formulation lasts for up to about 20 hours.
- 5. The dosage form of claim 1 wherein the active agent formulation comprises two or more drugs.
- 6. A method for obtaining release of an active agent formulation into a fluid environment of use from a dosage form over a prolonged period of time comprising:
- a) protecting a plurality of discrete portions of the surface of the active agent formulation from contact with the fluid environment of use, the amount of surface area remaining unprotected being greater than the amount of surface area being protected; and
- b) increasing the surface area of the dosage form over the prolonged period of time by transporting portions of the unprotected active agent formulation into the fluid environment of use.
- 7. The method of claim 6, the prolonged period of time being a period of up to about 20 hours.
- 8. The method of claim 6, the active agent formulation comprising a drug.
- 9. The method of claim 6, the active agent formulation comprising two or more drugs.
- 10. The method of claim 6, the fluid environment of use being selected from the group consisting of the stomach and the intestinal tract.
