Claims
- 1. A plug assembly adapted to connect a bare end of an optical fiber to a receptacle having a fiber clamping element, the assembly comprising:
- a plug housing having first and second ends;
- means for securing a portion of the bare end of the fiber within said plug housing and for positioning the bare end of the fiber proximate said first end of said plug housing;
- latch means for removably securing said plug housing to the receptacle; and
- a camming member attached to said first end of said plug housing and extending outwardly therefrom, located such that when said plug housing is fully inserted in the receptacle, said camming member actuates the fiber clamping element.
- 2. The plug assembly of claim 1 further comprising a fiber protector located in said plug housing and attached thereto such that said protector is capable of sliding along a longitudinal axis of said plug housing, said fiber protector substantially enclosing the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is removed from the receptacle, and said fiber protector retracting when said plug housing is inserted into the receptacle to expose the bare end of the fiber.
- 3. The plug assembly of claim 2 further comprising means for biasing said securing means toward said first end of said plug housing to place a preload condition on the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is inserted into the receptacle.
- 4. The plug assembly of claim 3 wherein the size and shape of said camming member is selected to actuate the fiber clamping element only after the bare end of the fiber has been fully inserted in the receptacle.
- 5. A plug assembly adapted to connect a bare end of an optical fiber to a receptacle having a fiber guide member, the assembly comprising:
- a plug housing having first and second ends;
- collet means for securing a portion of the bare end of the fiber within said plug housing and for positioning the bare end of the fiber proximate said first end of said plug housing;
- latch means for removably securing said plug housing to the receptacle; and
- a fiber protector located in said plug housing and attached thereto such that said protector is capable of sliding along a longitudinal axis of said plug housing, said fiber protector retracting when said plug housing is inserted into the receptacle to direct the bare end of the fiber into the fiber guide member.
- 6. The plug assembly of claim 5 wherein said fiber protector is biased toward said first end of said plug housing such that said fiber protector slides toward said first end as said plug housing is removed from the receptacle and substantially encloses the bare end of the fiber prior to complete removal of said plug housing from the receptacle.
- 7. The plug assembly of claim 6 wherein the receptacle also has a fiber clamping element, and further comprising a camming member attached to said first end of said plug housing and extending outwardly therefrom, located such that when said plug housing is fully inserted in the receptacle, said camming member actuates the fiber clamping element.
- 8. The plug assembly of claim 7 further comprising means for biasing said collet means toward said first end of said plug housing to place a preload condition on the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is inserted into the receptacle.
- 9. A plug assembly adapted to connect a bare end of an optical fiber to a receptacle, the assembly comprising:
- a plug housing having first and second ends;
- collet means for securing a portion of the bare end of the fiber within said plug housing and for positioning the bare end of the fiber proximate said first end of said plug housing;
- latch means for removably securing said plug housing to the receptacle; and
- means for biasing said collet means toward said first end of said plug housing to place a preload condition on the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is inserted into the receptacle.
- 10. The plug assembly of claim 9 wherein:
- said plug housing is capable of being opened and closed repeatedly to provide access to said collet means; and
- said collet means is capable of being disengaged to allow removal of the bare end of the fiber and replacement with a new fiber.
- 11. The plug assembly of claim 10 wherein the receptacle has a fiber clamping element, and further comprising a camming member attached to said first end of said plug housing and extending outwardly therefrom, located such that when said plug housing is fully inserted in the receptacle, said camming member actuates the fiber clamping element.
- 12. The plug assembly of claim 11 further comprising a fiber protector located in said plug housing and attached thereto such that said protector is capable of sliding along a longitudinal axis of said plug housing, said fiber protector substantially enclosing the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is removed from the receptacle, and said fiber protector retracting when said plug housing is inserted into the receptacle to expose the bare end of the fiber.
- 13. A receptacle for interconnecting bare ends of two optical fibers, comprising:
- a clamping element movable between open and closed states, and having means for securing the bare ends of the fibers in optical connection in said closed state;
- a guide tube having first and second open ends for receiving the respective bare ends of the two fibers, a pocket located between said first and second ends for receiving said clamping element, and camming means for actuating said clamping element;
- a base having first and second open ends and an interior space therebetween for receiving said guide tube; and
- means for securing said clamping element in said pocket and for securing said guide tube in said interior space.
- 14. The receptacle of claim 13 wherein the bare end of one of the optical fibers is permanently positioned in said clamping element.
- 15. The receptacle of claim 13 wherein:
- said pocket is sized to allow said clamping element to rock within said pocket; and
- said camming means on said guide tube includes first and second camming surfaces located such that, when only one of said camming surfaces is actuated, said clamping element rocks to a side of said pocket opposite said one camming surface and remains in said open state, but when both of said camming surfaces are actuated, said clamping element is forced to said closed state.
- 16. The receptacle of claim 15 wherein said securing means comprises a cap having latch means for releasably engaging said base, and said cap further includes a wall structure for positioning a camming finger toward one of said camming surface.
- 17. A connector system for interconnecting terminal ends of two optical fibers, comprising:
- a receptacle including
- a clamping element movable between open and closed states, and having means for securing the bare ends of the fibers in optical connection in said closed state,
- a guide tube having first and second open ends for receiving the respective bare ends of the two fibers, a pocket located between said first and second ends for receiving said clamping element, and camming means for actuating said clamping element,
- a base having first and second open ends and an interior space therebetween for receiving said guide tube, and
- means for securing said clamping element in said pocket and for securing said guide tube in said interior space; and
- at least one plug assembly adapted to mate with said receptacle, said plug assembly including
- a plug housing having first and second ends,
- collet means for securing a portion of the bare end of the fiber within said plug housing and for positioning the bare end of the fiber proximate said first end of said plug housing, and
- a camming finger attached to said first end of said plug housing and extending outwardly therefrom, located such that when said plug housing is fully inserted in said receptacle, said camming finger forcibly abuts said camming means.
- 18. The connector system of claim 17 wherein said plug assembly further includes latch means for removably securing said plug housing to said receptacle.
- 19. The connector system of claim 18 wherein said plug assembly further includes:
- a fiber protector located in said plug housing and attached thereto such that said protector is capable of sliding along a longitudinal axis of said plug housing, said fiber protector substantially enclosing the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is removed from said receptacle, and said fiber protector retracting when said plug housing is inserted into said receptacle to direct the bare end of the fiber toward said guide tube; and
- means for biasing said collet means toward said first end of said plug housing to place a preload condition on the bare end of the fiber when said plug housing is inserted into said receptacle.
- 20. The connector system of claim 19 wherein the size and shape of said camming finger is selected to actuate said camming means only after the bare end of the fiber has been fully inserted in said receptacle.
