Claims
- 1. A battery comprising: a can comprising a closed end, an open end and a side wall extending between the closed and open ends; a positive electrode, a negative electrode and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte solution contained within the can; and a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the can for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell; wherein:(a) the sealed internal volume of the cell is defined by the container and the collector assembly and is available for containing the electrodes and electrolyte; (b) the battery has an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; (c) the total volume is equal to the sum of the sealed internal volume, the collector assembly volume and a container volume; and (d) the sealed internal volume is at least 88.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 2. The battery according to claim 1, wherein the sealed internal volume is from 88.4% to 97.0% of the total volume of the battery.
- 3. The battery according to claim 1, wherein the collector assembly comprises a collector and at least one member selected from the group consisting of a seal, a cover, and an electrical insulator between the collector and the can.
- 4. The battery according to claim 3, wherein the collector assembly comprises a collector, and a seal.
- 5. The battery according to claim 4, wherein the collector assembly further comprises an inner cover.
- 6. The battery according to claim 3, wherein the collector assembly comprises a collector and an electrical insulator between the collector and the can.
- 7. The battery according to claim 6, wherein the battery further comprises an outer cover disposed across the open end of the can, the outer cover comprising a contact terminal for the battery, and wherein the electrical insulator is disposed at an interface between the outer cover and the can.
- 8. The battery according to claim 6, wherein the battery further comprises an outer cover disposed across the open end of the can and in direct contact with the can, and wherein the electric insulator is disposed at an interface between the outer cover and the collector.
- 9. The battery according to claim 1, wherein the negative electrode comprises zinc, the positive electrode comprises manganese dioxide and the electrolyte comprises potassium hydroxide.
- 10. The battery according to claim 9, wherein the battery is a D sized battery and the internal volume is at least 89.2% of the total volume of the battery.
- 11. The battery according to claim 10, wherein the internal volume is from 89.2% to 97.0% of the total volume of the battery.
- 12. The battery according to claim 10, wherein the internal volume is at least 92.6% of the total volume of the battery.
- 13. The battery according to claim 12, wherein the internal volume is at least 93.5% of the total volume of the battery.
- 14. The battery according to claim 13, wherein the internal volume is at least 94.9% of the total volume of the battery.
- 15. The battery according to claim 14, wherein the internal volume is at least 97.0% of the total volume of the battery.
- 16. The battery according to claim 9, wherein the battery is a D sized battery and the internal volume is at least 44.67 cubic centimeters.
- 17. The battery according to claim 16, wherein the internal volume is at least 45.53 cubic centimeters.
- 18. The battery according to claim 17, wherein the internal volume is at least 46.34 cubic centimeters.
- 19. The battery according to claim 18, wherein the internal volume is at least 46.82 cubic centimeters.
- 20. The battery according to claim 19, wherein the internal volume is at least 47.52 cubic centimeters.
- 21. The battery according to claim 20, wherein the internal volume is at least 48.59 cubic centimeters.
- 22. A battery comprising: a can comprising a closed end, an open end and a side wall extending between the closed and open ends; a manganese dioxide containing positive electrode, a zinc containing negative electrode and an aqueous potassium hydroxide electrolyte solution contained within the can; and a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the can for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell; wherein:(a) the battery is a C sized battery; (b) the sealed internal volume of the cell is defined by the container and the collector assembly and is available for containing the electrodes and electrolyte; (c) the battery has an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; (d) the total volume is equal to the sum of the sealed internal volume, the collector assembly volume and a container volume; and (e) the sealed internal volume is at least 85.1% of the total volume of the battery.
- 23. The battery according to claim 22, wherein the internal volume is from 85.1% to 90.6% of the total volume of the battery.
- 24. The battery according to claim 22, wherein the internal volume is at least 86.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 25. The battery according to claim 24, wherein the internal volume is at least 88.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 26. The battery according to claim 25, wherein the internal volume is at least 90.6% of the total volume of the battery.
- 27. A battery comprising: a can comprising a closed end, an open end and a side wall extending between the closed and open ends; a manganese dioxide containing positive electrode, a zinc containing negative electrode and an aqueous potassium hydroxide electrolyte solution contained within the can; and a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the can for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell; wherein:(a) the battery is a C sized battery; (b) the sealed internal volume of the cell is defined by the container and the collector assembly and is available for containing the electrodes and electrolyte; (c) the battery has an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; (d) the total volume is equal to the sum of the sealed internal volume, the collector assembly volume and a container volume; (e) the sealed internal volume is at least 83.2% of the total volume of the battery; and (f) the internal volume is at least 20.21 cubic centimeters.
- 28. The battery according to claim 27, wherein the internal volume is at least 20.92 cubic centimeters.
- 29. The battery according to claim 28, wherein the internal volume is at least 21.42 cubic centimeters.
- 30. The battery according to claim 29, wherein the internal volume is at least 21.73 cubic centimeters.
- 31. The battery according to claim 30, wherein the internal volume is at least 22.26 cubic centimeters.
- 32. A battery comprising: a can comprising a closed end, an open end and a side wall extending between the closed and open ends; a manganese dioxide containing positive electrode, a zinc containing negative electrode and an aqueous potassium hydroxide electrolyte solution contained within the can; and a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the can for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell; wherein:(a) the battery is an AA sized battery; (b) the sealed internal volume of the cell is defined by the container and the collector assembly and is available for containing the electrodes and electrolyte; (c) the battery has an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; (d) the total volume is equal to the sum of the sealed internal volume, the collector assembly volume and a container volume; and (e) the sealed internal volume is at least 82.0% of the total volume of the battery.
- 33. The battery according to claim 32, wherein the internal volume is from 82.0% to 90.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 34. The battery according to claim 32, wherein the internal volume is at least 83.5% of the total volume of the battery.
- 35. The battery according to claim 34, wherein the internal volume is at least 84.7% of the total volume of the battery.
- 36. The battery according to claim 35, wherein the internal volume is at least 87.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 37. The battery according to claim 36, wherein the internal volume is at least 89.6% of the total volume of the battery.
- 38. The battery according to claim 37, wherein the internal volume is at least 90.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 39. The battery according to claim 32, wherein the internal volume is at least 6.47 cubic centimeters.
- 40. The battery according to claim 39, wherein the internal volume is at least 6.56 cubic centimeters.
- 41. The battery according to claim 40, wherein the internal volume is at least 6.68 cubic centimeters.
- 42. The battery according to claim 41, wherein the internal volume is at least 6.77 cubic centimeters.
- 43. The battery according to claim 42, wherein the internal volume is at least 6.95 cubic centimeters.
- 44. The battery according to claim 43, wherein the internal volume is at least 7.0 cubic centimeters.
- 45. A battery comprising: a can comprising a closed end, an open end and a side wall extending between the closed and open ends; a manganese dioxide containing positive electrode, a zinc containing negative electrode and an aqueous potassium hydroxide electrolyte solution contained within the can; and a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the can for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell; wherein:(a) the battery is an AAA sized battery; (b) the sealed internal volume of the cell is defined by the container and the collector assembly and is available for containing the electrodes and electrolyte; (c) the battery has an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; (d) the total volume is equal to the sum of the sealed internal volume, the collector assembly volume and a container volume; and (e) the sealed internal volume is at least 78.7% of the total volume of the battery.
- 46. The battery according to claim 45, wherein the internal volume is from 78.7% to 90.1% of the total volume of the battery.
- 47. The battery according to claim 45, wherein the internal volume is at least 84.6% of the total volume of the battery.
- 48. The battery according to claim 47, wherein the internal volume is at least 88.0% of the total volume of the battery.
- 49. The battery according to claim 48, wherein the internal volume is at least 90.1% of the total volume of the battery.
- 50. The battery according to claim 45, wherein the internal volume is at least 2.811 cubic centimeters.
- 51. The battery according to claim 50, wherein the internal volume is at least 2.811 cubic centimeters.
- 52. The battery according to claim 51, wherein the internal volume is at least 2.90 cubic centimeters.
- 53. The battery according to claim 52, wherein the internal volume is at least 3.02 cubic centimeters.
- 54. The battery according to claim 53, wherein the internal volume is at least 3.06 cubic centimeters.
- 55. The battery according to claim 54, wherein the internal volume is at least 3.14 cubic centimeters.
- 56. The battery according to claim 55, wherein the internal volume is at least 3.22 cubic centimeters.
- 57. The battery according to claim 1, wherein a pressure relief mechanism is formed in a surface of the can.
- 58. The battery according to claim 57, wherein the pressure relief mechanism is formed in the closed end of the can.
- 59. The battery according to claim 1, wherein the battery comprises a cylindrically shaped alkaline cell and the side wall of the can is 0.004 to 0.008 inch thick.
- 60. The battery according to claim 59, wherein the side wall thickness is 0.006 inch or less.
- 61. The battery according to claim 1, wherein the side wall of the can has an exterior surface on which a label is printed.
- 62. The battery according to claim 61, wherein a base coat of primer is disposed between the exterior surface of the side wall and the label.
- 63. A battery comprising:a container containing electrochemically active materials including positive and negative electrodes and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, the container having an open end, a closed end, and side walls extending between the open and closed ends; a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the container for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell defined by the collector assembly and the container; an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; and a pressure relief mechanism formed in the closed end of said container for releasing internal pressure from within said container when the internal pressure becomes excessive, wherein the sealed internal volume is at least 88.4% of the total volume of the battery.
- 64. The battery according to claim 63, wherein the sealed internal volume is from 88.4% to 97.0% of the total volume of the battery.
- 65. The battery according to claim 4, wherein the sealed internal volume is from 88.4% to 90.1% of the total volume of the battery.
- 66. The battery according to claim 63, wherein the battery further comprises a cover over the closed end of the container.
- 67. The battery according to claim 66, wherein the cover comprises a protrusion, and the pressure relief mechanism is disposed beneath the protrusion such that the pressure relief mechanism is capable of releasing pressure without interference from the cover.
- 68. The battery according to claim 66, wherein the cover is in electrical contact with the positive electrode.
- 69. The battery according to claim 63, wherein the positive electrode comprises manganese dioxide and the negative electrode comprises zinc.
- 70. The battery according to claim 63, wherein the end wall of the container is integrally formed with the side wall.
- 71. A battery comprising:a container containing electrochemically active materials including positive and negative electrodes and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, the container having an open end, a closed end, and side walls extending between the open and closed ends; a collector assembly positioned across the open end of the container for sealing the electrodes and electrolyte within a sealed internal volume of the cell defined by the collector assembly and the container; an external surface defining a total volume of the battery; and a pressure relief mechanism formed in the closed end of said container for releasing internal pressure from within said container when the internal pressure becomes excessive; wherein: the battery is a AA sized battery; the active materials comprise manganese dioxide and zinc and the electrolyte comprises potassium hydroxide; the sealed internal volume is at least 88.4% of the total volume of the battery; and a cover, comprising a projection, is disposed on the closed end of the container such that the pressure relief mechanism is beneath the projection so the pressure relief mechanism is capable of releasing pressure without interference from the cover.
