Claims
- 1. A battery element useful as at least a portion of a plate in a lead acid battery comprising active material and an acid resistant metal impurity inhibiting amount of a porous organic polymer having phosphonic groups which have a preferential affinity for at least one soluble metal impurity ion more number than lead provided that at least a portion of said organic polymer is incorporated into said active material.
- 2. The element of claim 1 where in the organic polymer has amino alkylene phosphonic functional groups.
- 3. The element of claim 2 wherein the organic polymer has amino methylene phosphonic functional groups.
- 4. The element of claim 1 wherein the organic polymer has amino alkyene phosphonic functional groups.
- 5. The element of claim 4 wherein the organic polymer has amino bismethylene phosphoric functional groups.
- 6. The element of claim 1 wherein the organic polymer has gem diphosphonic functional groups.
- 7. The element of claim 3 wherein the organic polymer is a cross-linked polystyrene and the cross-linking is by divinylbenzene.
- 8. The element of claim 5 wherein the organic polymer is a cross-linked polystyrene and the cross-linking is by divinylbenzene.
- 9. The element of claim 6 wherein the organic polymer is a cross-linked polystyrene, the cross-linking is by divinylbenzene and the organic polymer has further sulfonic functional groups.
- 10. The element of claim 3 wherein the soluble metal impurity is selected from the group consisting of antimony, cobalt and nickel.
- 11. The element of claim 6 wherein the soluble metal impurity is selected from the group consisting of antimony, cobalt and nickel.
- 12. The element of claim 7 wherein the soluble metal impurity is selected from the group consisting of antimony, cobalt and nickel.
- 13. The element of claim 7 wherein the soluble metal impurity is antimony.
- 14. The element of claim of 3 wherein the active material is negative active material.
- 15. The element of claim of 6 wherein the active material is negative active material.
- 16. The element of claim of 7 wherein the active material is negative active material.
- 17. A battery element useful as at least a portion of a plate in a lead acid battery comprising active material and an acid resistant metal impurity inhibiting amount of a porous organic polymer having amino pyridine functional groups which have a preferential affinity for at least one soluble metal impurity ion more nobler than lead provided that at least a portion of said organic polymer is incorporated into said active material.
- 18. The element of claim 17 wherein the organic polymer has 2-picoline functional groups.
- 19. The element of claim 17 wherein the organic polymer has bispicoline functional groups.
- 20. The element of claim 19 wherein the soluble metal impurity is selected from the group consisting of nickel and copper.
- 21. A battery element useful as at least a separator in a lead acid battery comprising a separator and an acid resistant metal impurity inhibiting amount of a porous organic polymer having functional groups selected from the groups consisting of phosphoric and amino pyridine groups which have a preferential affinity for at least one soluble metal impurity ion more nobler than lead provided that at least a portion of said porous polymer is associated with said separator.
