One or more embodiments relate to a battery pack and a method of manufacturing the same.
Secondary batteries refer to batteries that are chargeable and dischargeable, unlike non-rechargeable primary batteries. Secondary batteries are used as energy sources for mobile devices, electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, electric bicycles, uninterruptible power supplies, etc. Depending on the type of an external device to which the secondary battery is applied, a secondary battery may be used in the form of a single battery or in the form of a pack in which multiple batteries are connected to each other and bundled in one unit.
The above-described background art is technical information that the inventor possessed to derive the present disclosure or acquired during the derivation process of the present disclosure, and is not necessarily known art disclosed to the general public prior to filing the present disclosure.
One or more embodiments include a battery pack and a method of manufacturing the same, in which a coating solution is applied to a coating area of a protection circuit module at a constant height, thereby preventing contamination of the protection circuit module and managing a shape and height of the protection circuit module.
One or more embodiments include a battery pack and a method of manufacturing the same, in which a fixing frame for holding a coating solution is mounted on a substrate, thereby easily forming a shape and height of the coating solution.

According to one or more embodiments, a battery pack includes a case, a battery cell accommodated in the case, and a protection circuit module connected to the battery cell, wherein the protection circuit module includes a substrate, at least one component mounting area on the substrate and comprising a plurality of components, and at least one coating area on the substrate corresponding to at least a portion of the at least one component mounting area and comprising at least one protruding portion supporting a coating solution within the at least one coating area, and at least a portion of the at least one protruding portion includes a same material as that of the substrate and is mounted on the substrate.
The substrate may include at least one first mounting area corresponding to the at least one component mounting area and having a solder pad formed thereon, and at least one second mounting area corresponding to the at least one coating area and having a solder pad formed thereon.
Each of the at least one coating area may include a single protruding portion including a single piece.
The single protruding portion may be provided outside each of the at least one coating area and may have a closed contour.
An inner edge of the single protruding portion may be separated from an edge of each of the at least one coating area, and an outer edge of the single protruding portion may be separated from an edge of the substrate.
The at least one protruding portion may have a constant height.
A height of the at least one protruding portion may gradually increase toward a central portion of the at least one protruding portion in a length direction thereof.
The at least one protruding portion may comprise a plurality of protruding portions provided for each of the at least one component mounting area and the plurality of protruding portions may be separated from each other to form a plurality of gaps.

According to one or more embodiments, a method of manufacturing a battery pack includes forming at least one first mounting area and at least one second mounting area by forming solder pads on a substrate, forming at least one component mounting area by mounting a plurality of components in the at least one first mounting area, forming at least one coating area by mounting at least one protruding portion in the at least one second mounting area, and applying a coating solution to the at least one coating area.
The forming of the at least one first mounting area and the at least one second mounting area may include forming the solder pads on the substrate such that the at least one second mounting area surrounds the at least one first mounting area.
The forming of the at least one coating area may include mounting a single protruding portion including a single piece in each of the at least one second mounting area.
The forming of the at least one coating area may include mounting a plurality of protruding portions in each of the at least one second mounting area such that a respective gap is formed between respective ones of the plurality of protruding portions.
According to some embodiments, there is provided a protection circuit module configured to be connected to a battery cell, the protection circuit module comprising: a substrate; at least one component mounting area on the substrate and comprising a plurality of components; and at least one coating area on the substrate at least in part corresponding to the at least one component mounting area and comprising at least one protruding portion supporting a coating solution within the at least one coating area, and at least a portion of the at least one protruding portion comprises a same material as that of the substrate and is mounted on the substrate.
In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 16, wherein the substrate comprises: at least one first mounting area corresponding to the at least one component mounting area and having a solder pad formed thereon; and at least one second mounting area corresponding to the at least one coating area and having a solder pad formed thereon.
In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 16, wherein each of the at least one coating area comprises a single protruding portion comprising a single piece.
In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 18, wherein the single protruding portion is provided outside each of the at least one coating area and has a closed contour.
In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 18, wherein an inner edge of the single protruding portion is separated from an edge of each of the at least one coating area, and an outer edge of the single protruding portion is separated from an edge of the substrate.

Increased computing performance of processors included in electronic devices and increased output of electric vehicles have naturally led to increased capacity of secondary batteries. The design of secondary batteries needs to take user convenience into consideration and secure a desired output within a limited space. Thus, an overcharge blocking voltage of secondary batteries has gradually increased and an overdischarge blocking voltage thereof has gradually decreased, thus expanding the usable area of battery packs to which secondary batteries are applied.
For this reason, a battery pack includes a protection circuit module to prevent overcharge, overdischarge, overcurrent, short circuit, etc. of a battery cell during use. The protection circuit module performs an overcharge protection function to prevent the battery cell from being overcharged beyond a protection voltage so that swelling and explosion of the battery do not occur due to gas and heat generated from the battery cell, an overdischarge protection function to prevent the battery cell from being discharged below an appropriate voltage, resulting in damage to the battery cell, an overcurrent blocking function to prevent the battery cell or the protection circuit module from being damaged due to malfunction of an external device, accidental overcurrent, etc., and a short circuit protection function to prevent the battery cell or the protection circuit module from being damaged due to a short circuit in an external load.
The protection circuit module includes various components mounted on a substrate. In the protection circuit module, a coating solution is applied onto the components to insulate the components from each other and protect the components from being damaged due to an impact, etc. occurring during use. However, if the coating solution is applied directly onto the components without a separate guide, the coating solution may overflow not only into a coating area in which the components are arranged, but also into adjacent areas. For example, the coating solution may contaminate a substrate tab that connects the protection circuit module to the battery cell, and thus, it may be impossible to weld the protection circuit module and the battery cell to each other. For example, it may be difficult to form the protection circuit module to a desired height and shape because there is no guide to maintain the shape and height of the coating solution constant.
Recently, there has been a demand to make the substrate of the protection circuit module thin to reduce the size of the battery pack. However, as the thickness of the substrate decreases, the substrate may be easily damaged even by a small impact.
The battery pack 10 according to embodiments of the present disclosure may be a pouch-type secondary battery and may be used in devices such as a desktop personal computer (PC), a tablet PC, a smartphone, a laptop PC, etc. In some embodiments, the battery pack 10 may be a can-type or cylindrical secondary battery and may be used in devices such as a tablet PC, a smartphone, a vehicle battery, etc. Hereinafter, for convenience of description, a case where the battery pack 10 is of a pouch type is described.
The battery pack 10 may include the case 120, the battery cell 110 accommodated in the case 120, and the protection circuit module 130 connected to the battery cell 110.
For example, the battery pack 10 may include the case 120, the battery cell 110 accommodated in the case 120, and the protection circuit module 130 connected to the battery cell 110, wherein the protection circuit module 130 may include a substrate 131, at least one component mounting area 134 on the substrate 131 and including a plurality of components 1341, and at least one coating area 133 on the substrate 131 to correspond to the at least one component mounting area 134 and including at least one protruding portion 1331 supporting a coating solution C therein, and at least a portion of the at least one protruding portion 1331 may include the same material as that of the substrate 131 and may be mounted on the substrate 131.
The battery cell 110 may be manufactured in the form of a jelly roll by winding a separator 113 between a first electrode plate 111 and a second electrode plate 112. In some embodiments, the battery cell 110 may be manufactured in the form of a stack by stacking separators 113 between a plurality of first electrode plates 111 and a plurality of second electrode plates 112. In some embodiments, the battery cell 110 may be manufactured in the form of both a jelly roll and a stack.
The first electrode plate 111 may include a first active material coating portion formed by intermittently coating a first active material, which is a conductive material in the form of a sheet, onto a first substrate, and a first uncoated portion in which the first substrate is exposed because the first active material is not coated thereon. For example, the first electrode plate 111 may be a negative electrode plate, and the first active material may be a negative electrode active material including a carbon material, such as crystalline carbon, amorphous carbon, carbon composite, carbon fiber, etc., a lithium metal, or a lithium alloy.
The second electrode plate 112 may have a polarity different from that of the first electrode plate 111 and may include a second active material coating portion formed by intermittently coating a second active material, which is a conductive material in the form of a sheet, onto a second substrate, and a second uncoated portion in which the second substrate is exposed because the second active material is not coated thereon. For example, the second electrode plate 112 may be a positive electrode plate, and the second active material may include a positive electrode active material including lithium, such as LiCoO2, LiNiO2, LiMnO2, LiMn2O4, LiNi1−x−yCoxMyO2 (where M is a metal), LiFePO4 (LFP), etc.
The separator 113 may be between the first electrode plate 111 and the second electrode plate 112. The separator 113 may insulate the first electrode plate 111 from the second electrode plate 112 and may exchange lithium ions between the first electrode plate 111 and the second electrode plate 112. The separator 113 may have a length sufficient to completely insulate the first electrode plate 111 from the second electrode plate 112 even if the battery cell 110 contracts or expands in a process of charging/discharging the battery pack 10.
At least one electrode tab 114 may be on a first side of the battery cell 110. For example, two electrode tabs 114 may respectively correspond to the first electrode plate 111 and the second electrode plate 112 and may respectively be on the first electrode plate 111 and the second electrode plate 112 to protrude to the first side of the battery cell 110. The electrode tab 114 may be electrically connected to a first side of the first uncoated portion of the first electrode plate 111 and may extend toward the outside of the battery cell 110. In some embodiments, the electrode tab 114 may be electrically connected to a first side of the second uncoated portion of the second electrode plate 112 and may extend toward the outside of the battery cell 110.
A film portion 115 may be disposed on the electrode tab 114. The film portion 115 may be disposed on one surface of the electrode tab 114 or may surround the electrode tab 114. The film portion 115 may seal the electrode tab 114 exposed to the outside of the battery cell 110. For example, to prevent a short circuit from occurring due to contact of the electrode tab 114 with a metal layer exposed at an end of a sealing portion 124 of the case 120, the film portion 115 may be thermally fused with the sealing portion 124 so that the electrode tab 114 and the sealing portion 124 may be closely coupled to each other.
The case 120 may form the exterior of the battery pack 10 and may accommodate the battery cell 110 therein. The shape and size of the case 120 are not limited, and the case 120 may have a shape and size corresponding to those of the battery cell 110. For example, as shown in
The case 120 may include a cover 121, a lower case 122, an inner space 123, and the sealing portion 124.
The lower case 122 may include the inner space 123 having a dimension greater than that of the battery cell 110, and the battery cell 110 may be inserted into the inner space 123. The cover 121 may be on an upper surface of the lower case 122 to be openable and closable such that the cover 121 may cover the battery cell 110 in a state where the battery cell 110 is inserted into the inner space 123.

The substrate tab 132 may be provided between a plurality of component mounting areas 134 adjacent to each other. For example, the substrate tab 132 may include a metal material, for example, nickel.
The at least one coating area 133 may be an area where components and circuits of the protection circuit module 130 are coated and may correspond to the at least one component mounting area 134. The coating area 133 may include the coating solution C, a film, etc. to insulate electric circuits and components provided in the component mounting area 134 from each other and protect the electric circuits and components from an external impact. Hereinafter, for convenience of description, a case where the coating area 133 is coated with the coating solution C is mainly described. The type of the coating solution C is not limited, as long as the coating solution C may insulate circuits and components from each other and protect the circuits and components from an external impact. The coating solution C may be a high-viscosity material and may be an ultraviolet (UV) coating solution. In some embodiments, the coating solution C may increase the strength of the component mounting area 134.

In some embodiments, at least a portion of the coating area 133 may have a height different from that of the upper surface of the substrate 131. For example, at least a portion of the coating area 133 may form a step with the upper surface of the substrate 131, and the coating solution C may be maintained within the coating area 133. For example, the coating solution C may not flow into other areas of the substrate 131 or the substrate tab 132.
Each of the at least one coating area 133 may include at least one protruding portion 1331.

The protruding portion 1331 may be mounted on the substrate 131. The protruding portion 1331 may be mounted on the substrate 131 like a component by using a component mounting device. Thus, in mounting components on the substrate 131 to form the protection circuit module 130, the protruding portion 1331 may also be mounted on the substrate 131 so that the coating area 133 may be easily formed. To this end, a solder pad may be formed in advance in an area of the substrate 131 where the protruding portion 1331 is to be mounted, and the protruding portion 1331 may be mounted on the solder pad.
At least a portion of the protruding portion 1331 may include the same material as that of the substrate 131. In some embodiments, the height and shape of the coating solution C may be managed uniformly. In some embodiments, by mounting the protruding portion 1331 forming the coating area 133 on the substrate 131 like a component, the coating area 133 may be easily formed. In some embodiments, the coating solution C applied to the coating area 133 may increase the strength of the component mounting area 134, thereby improving the durability of the protection circuit module 130.

In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 16, wherein the substrate comprises: at least one first mounting area corresponding to the at least one component mounting area and having a solder pad formed thereon; and at least one second mounting area corresponding to the at least one coating area and having a solder pad formed thereon.
In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 16, wherein each of the at least one coating area comprises a single protruding portion comprising a single piece.
In some embodiments, the protection circuit module as claimed in claim 18, wherein the single protruding portion is provided outside each of the at least one coating area and has a closed contour.
