Claims
- 1. A process for stabilizing an organic material against oxidative, thermal or light-induced degradation, which comprises incorporating therein or applying thereto at least one compound of formula I ##STR54## wherein R.sub.1 is halogen or --OR'.sub.1,
- R'.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkanoyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.25 alkenoyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.25 alkanoyl which is interrupted by oxygen, sulfur or >N--R.sub.6 ; C.sub.6 -C.sub.9 cycloalkylcarbonyl, thenoyl, furoyl, benzoyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl-substituted benzoyl; naphthoyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl-substituted naphthoyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkanesulfonyl, fluoro-substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkanesulfonyl; phenylsulfonyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl-substituted phenylsulfonyl; ##STR55## R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each independently of one another hydrogen, chloro, hydroxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.9 -phenylalkyl, unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl-substituted phenyl, unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl-substituted C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 cycloalkyl; C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylamino, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl)amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkanoyloxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.25 alkanoylamino, C.sub.3 -C.sub.25 alkenoyloxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.25 alkanoyloxy which is interrupted by oxygen, sulfur or >N--R.sub.6 ; C.sub.6 -C.sub.9 cycloalkylcarbonyloxy, benzoyloxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl-substituted benzoyloxy; or each of the substituent pairs R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 or R.sub.4 and R.sub.5, together with the linking carbon atoms, forms a benzene ring; R.sub.4 is additionally --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --COR.sub.9 or --(CH.sub.2).sub.q OH, or, if R.sub.3 and R.sub.5 are hydrogen, R.sub.4 is additionally a radical of formula II ##STR56## R.sub.6 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, R.sub.7 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl,
- R.sub.8 is a direct bond, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkylene, C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 alkylene which is interrupted by oxygen, sulfur or >N--R.sub.6 ; C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 alkenylene, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkylidene, C.sub.7 -C.sub.20 phenylalkylidene, C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 cycloalkylene, C.sub.7 -C.sub.8 bicycloalkylene, unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl-substituted phenylene, ##STR57## R.sub.9 is hydroxy, ##EQU3## C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkoxy or ##STR58## R.sub.10 is oxygen, --NH-- or ##STR59## R.sub.11 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl or phenyl, R.sub.12 and R.sub.13 are each independently of the other hydrogen, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl or phenyl, or R.sub.12 and R.sub.13, together with the linking carbon atom, form a C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 cycloalkylidene ring which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 to 3 C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups,
- R.sub.14 and R.sub.15 are each independently of the other hydrogen, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl,
- M is a metal cation of valency r,
- n is 0, 1 or 2,
- p is 0, 1 or 2,
- q is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, and
- r is 1, 2 or 3.
- 2. A process for the preparation of a compound of formula I ##STR60## wherein R.sub.1 is halogen or --OR'.sub.1,

- R.sub.14 and R.sub.15 are each independently of the other hydrogen, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl,
- M is a metal cation of valency r,
- n is 0, 1 or 2,
- p is 0, 1 or 2,
- q is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, and
- r is 1, 2 or 3;
- which comprises reacting
- a) one equivalent of a phenol of formula III ##STR66## wherein R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are as defined for formula I, with 0.8 to 2.0 equivalents of glyoxylic acid, to give a compound of formula IV ##STR67## (IV), and further, b), when R'.sub.1 is not hydrogen, to prepare a compound of formula I, by reacting the resultant compound of formula IV with a reactant selected from the group consisting of a hydrohalic acid, a halide of an oxysulfuric acid, a halide of phosphoric acid, a halide of phosphorous acid, an acid of formula V
- R'.sub.1 --OH (V),
- an acid halide of formula VI
- R'.sub.1 -Y (VI),
- an ester of formula VII
- R'.sub.1 --O--R.sub.16 (VII),
- a symmetrical or unsymmetrical anhydride of formula VIII
- R'.sub.1 --O--R'.sub.1 (VIII),
- or an isocyanate of formula IX
- R.sub.11 --N.dbd.C.dbd.O (IX),
- wherein R'.sub.1 and R.sub.11 in the compounds of formulae V, VI, VII, VIII and IX are as defined above, with the proviso that R'.sub.1 is not hydrogen;
- R.sub.16 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, and
- Y is fluoro, chloro, bromo or iodo.
- 3. A process according to claim 2, wherein the glyoxylic acid is used as 40 to 60% aqueous glyoxylic acid.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 wherein the glyoxylic acid is 50% aqueous glyoxylic acid.
