Claims
- 1. A rack for carrying a bicycle on a vehicle, the rack comprising
forward and rear crossbars extending across a top surface of the vehicle, a pair of tower bodies associated with each crossbar to secure the crossbars to the vehicle surface, and a wheel mount attached to a first one of the crossbars, where the wheel mount is adapted to support a wheel of the bicycle with a lowest point on the wheel positioned over a range of positions relative to the crossbar including with the lowest point positioned off the wheel mount.
- 2. The rack of claim 1 further including a fork block attached to a second one of the crossbars.
- 3. The rack of claim 2, wherein the fork block includes:
an elongate skewer mounted to the fork block; a cam follower slidably mounted on the skewer; and a cam lever pivotally mounted on the skewer adjacent the cam follower and operable upon rotation to reciprocally shift the cam follower on the skewer, where the cam lever further carries a lock to selectively secure the cam lever to the cam follower.
- 4. The rack of claim 3, wherein the cam follower has a serrated surface for gripping a wheel fork.
- 5. The rack of claim 1, wherein the wheel mount includes a wheel tray portion shaped to conform generally to the outer surface of the wheel.
- 6. The rack of claim 1, wherein the attachment of the wheel mount to the first one of the crossbars allows the wheel mount to rotate about a longitudinal axis of the crossbar.
- 7. The rack of claim 1, wherein the crossbars are generally rectangular in cross-section and the attachment of the wheel mount to the first one of the crossbars allows the wheel mount to be secured in one of a plurality of discrete upward-facing rotational orientations about a longitudinal axis of the crossbar.
- 8. A rack for carrying a bicycle on a vehicle, the rack comprising
forward and rear crossbars extending across the top surface of the vehicle, a pair of tower bodies associated with each crossbar to the vehicle, and a wheel mount pivotally mounted on a first of the crossbars, the wheel mount having a curvature configured for receiving a portion of the bicycle wheel, and a fork mount attached to the second crossbar, the fork mount including a mechanism configured to securely hold a bicycle fork.
- 9. The rack of claim 8, wherein the fork block includes an elongate skewer mounted to the fork block, a cam follower slidably mounted on the skewer, and a cam lever pivotally mounted on the skewer adjacent the cam follower, and operable upon rotation to reciprocally shift the cam follower on the skewer.
- 10. The rack of claim 9, wherein the cam lever carries a lock to selectively secure the cam lever to the cam follower.
