The invention relates to bins, and in particular, to removable bins for use with centrifugal spin dryers.
Centrifugal spin dryers are commonly used in the agriculture industry to dry vegetables such as lettuce and cabbage. One such dryer is the SD50 Spin Dryer made by Heinzen Manufacturing International. The SD50 Spin Dryer accepts a removable bin loaded with produce (e.g. lettuce, cabbage, etc.) and spins the produce at high speeds (by rotating the bin) in order to remove excess water. The dryer comprises a cavity to accommodate the removable bin, with the bin typically positioned at an angle from vertical when inserted into the dryer and with the open end of the bin generally facing upwards. A number of openings are also formed through the walls of the bin.
When the dryer initially rotates the bin (e.g. at around 50 rpm), the produce itself is generally forced through centrifugal force to the perimeter of the bin. As the dryer increases its rotational speed (e.g. to up to 200 rpm) water on the produce is forced outward and downward (through centrifugal force and gravity) from the produce. This water escapes from the bin through the openings. When the dryer stops, the resulting produce is dryer and can be unloaded for further processing or transport.
The bins currently used are typically made from conventional garbage or other all-purpose bins that have had multiple holes manually drilled through their walls. This is a tedious process requiring significant manpower and time. In addition, the holes are often drilled in a haphazard manner. For example, if too few holes are drilled, this could result in bins that suffer inconsistent or reduced effectiveness in draining the excess water. On the other hand, if too many holes are drilled, then the structural integrity of the bin may be compromised.
There is therefore a need for a removable bin that is both structurally sound and yet exhibits good water draining capabilities.
According to one embodiment of the invention, a removable bin for a dryer comprises a substantially circular floor portion and a wall portion. The wall portion comprises first and second ends, with the first end defining a bin opening and the second end being connected to the floor portion. The wall portion also comprises an upper portion extending from the first end and a lower portion extending between the upper portion and the second end. The lower portion comprises a plurality of zones arranged along a height of the lower portion and extending along a perimeter of the lower portion. Each zone defines a respective area of the lower portion. Each of the zones comprises a number of openings for drainage, and each zone has a respective density of openings defined as the number of openings in the zone per the respective area. Each of the openings is defined by one or more circumferential edges, with the circumferential edges being molded. The respective density of openings in each of the zones increases towards the second end.
In another embodiment, the wall portion is tapered from the first end to the second end.
In yet another embodiment, the upper portion comprises an upper wall and a lip extending away from the upper wall.
In still yet another embodiment, the upper portion further comprises one or more lip cross-ribs extending radially away from the upper wall, with the lip cross-ribs being attached to the lip.
In a further embodiment, the upper portion further comprises one or more handles, with each of the handles comprising a handle opening and one or more handle walls extending away from the upper wall. The one or more handle walls define at least a portion of the handle opening.
In still a further embodiment, the lip defines at least another portion of the handle opening.
In yet a further embodiment, the one or more handle walls define an entirety of the handle opening.
In another embodiment, the lip extends away from the upper wall a first distance and the one or more handle walls extend away from the upper wall a second distance. The first distance is greater than or equal to the second distance.
In still another embodiment, the upper portion further comprises handle support ribs extending away from the upper wall and located proximate to the handle opening.
In yet another embodiment, the upper portion further comprises handle support walls extending away from the upper wall, with each handle support wall being attached to at least one of the handle support ribs.
In still yet another embodiment, the lower portion comprises three zones.
In a further embodiment, the lower portion comprises a band extending along the perimeter of the lower portion and extending for a portion of the height of the lower portion, with the band being free of the openings.

In still yet a further embodiment, the base comprises an outer portion and an inner floor, with the inner floor being substantially surrounded by the outer portion.
In another embodiment, the outer portion comprises two or more base handles and two or more outer floors, with each of the outer floors extending between two of the base handles.
In yet another embodiment, at least one of the outer floors comprises outer floor openings for drainage.
In still another embodiment, the base handles comprise one or more base handle walls to define one or more recesses.

As the removable bin 10 is rotated within the food dryer 200, centrifugal force and gravity tend to cause the water present on the contents to generally move both outwardly (i.e. away from the center of the removable bin 10 and toward the wall portion 14) and downwardly (i.e. toward the floor portion 16). Because of this general downward movement of the water, it is expected that more water will tend to escape through towards the bottom of the wall portion 14 compared to the top of the wall portion 14. Consequently, the additional density of openings 38 proximate to the bottom of the lower portion 20 will allow for the more efficient escape of water from the removable bin 10.

The floor portion 16 comprises a base 48 connected to the lower portion 20 through a rounded corner 50. The rounded corner 50 helps to make the removable bin 10 more comfortable when placed on the shoulder of a person carrying the removable bin 10. In such a scenario, the rounded corner 50 is more comfortable on the shoulder of the person (i.e. compared to a bin with sharp corners). In addition, the rounded corner 50 allows for easier cleaning of the bottom of the removable bin 10 as there are fewer sharp crevices to trap dirt.

When the removable bin 10 is placed within the metal basket 204 of the food dryer 200, the inner floor 54 of the removable bin 10 comes into contact with two semi-circular discs 214 that are connected together using one or more springs 216. As the semi-circular discs 214 are rotated, centrifugal force causes the semi-circular discs 214 to move away from each other, while stretching the springs 216. As the semi-circular discs 214 move apart, they eventually come into contact with the ledge 64. Centrifugal force causes the semi-circular discs 214 to exert pressure on the ledge 64, creating a gripping force on the ledge 64. This gripping force in turns causes the removable bin 10 to rotate with the semicircular discs 214.
As the semi-circular discs 214 exert significant pressure on the ledge 64, the ledge ribs 66 help to provide additional strength to the ledge 64. In addition, when the semi-circular discs 214 are engaged against the ledge 64, the presence of the ridge 65 also helps to prevents the removable bin 10 from moving vertically (i.e. out of the metal basket 204).
At least a portion of the removable bin 10 may be molded. Preferably, the entire removable bin 10 is molded from plastic. As such, the openings 38 are preferably formed during the molding process, with one or more circumferential edges 68 defining each of the openings 38. The circumferential edges 68 are preferably molded. The openings 38 are preferably rounded but may be of any suitable shape. As such, the circumferential edges 68 are not necessarily circular in shape.

This increase in the horizontal separation between the respective wall portions 14A, 14B allows for the removable bins 10A, 10B to be more easily detached from one another. In particular, if a displaced piece of produce (e.g. spinach) was between the wall portions 14A, 14B, the increase in horizontal separation would result in less chance of the piece of produce being stuck between the wall portions and potentially interfering with the nesting of the removable bins 10A, 10B.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the preferred embodiment has been described in some detail but that certain modifications may be practiced without departing from the principles of the invention.
