Claims
- 1. A BPSK modulator for modulating a binary data signal onto a carrier signal for transmission comprising
- a center tap transformer having first and second windings,
- first and second transistors, each having a collector, an emitter and a base, the first and second transistors connected together in a mirror configuration, the bases of the first and second transistors for receiving the binary data signal, the collectors of the first and second transistors being coupled to the first winding of the center tap transformer, the center tap of the transformer being DC biased, and the second winding providing the BPSK modulated carrier output signal,
- a third transistor having a collector, an emitter and a base, the collector being coupled to the emitters of the first and second transistors, the base being coupled to the carrier signal, and
- programmable gain control means also coupled to the base of the third transistor for providing step-wise level control of the BPSK modulated carrier output signal.
- 2. A BPSK modulator according to claim 1 further comprising
- control means for providing a gain control input signal to the programmable gain control means.
- 3. A BPSK modulator according to claim 2 wherein the control means provides a particular gain control input signal responsive to receipt of a gain control command.
- 4. A BPSK modulator according to claim 1 further comprising
- a dc biasing network for providing an equal dc bias to each base of the first and second transistors.
- 5. A BPSK modulator according to claim 1 wherein the carrier signal frequency is selected from the T8 band of frequencies.
- 6. A BPSK modulator according to claim 1 wherein the data signal comprises Miller encoded data.
- 7. A BPSK modulator according to claim 2 wherein the programmable gain control receives digital gain control input signals, the control means comprising a microprocessor.
- 8. A BPSK modulator according to claim 2 wherein the base of the third transistor receives a carrier signal at one predetermined carrier signal frequency selected from a plurality of predetermined carrier signal frequencies, the control means further providing a frequency select signal.
- 9. A BPSK modulator according to claim 2 further comprising a frequency synthesizer responsive to the control means for providing one predetermined carrier signal frequency selected from a plurality of predetermined carrier signal frequencies.
- 10. A BPSK modulator according to claim 9 wherein the plurality of predetermined carrier signal frequencies are from the T8 band of frequencies.
- 11. A BPSK modulator according to claim 1 wherein the data bit rate of the binary data signal is approximately 20 kilobits per second.
